This is why I write my manifesto with good ol pen and paper.

793

u/Simon_Drake 13h ago

Dont include phrases that only you use like "eat your cake and have it". That's how the Unabomber was caught.

563

u/20_mile 13h ago

That's how the Unabomber was caught.

Close, but more specifically, the Unabomber's manifesto (some pretty good ideas in there, actually) was 35,000 words long and the ideas reminded Ted's brother of ideas and concepts that he spoke about during his college years, so the brother went to the FBI and said, "Hey, my brother used to say stuff like this." It wasn't one specific phrase.

477

u/jacobjer 12h ago

Since we’re being technical, it was his brother’s wife who read the phrasing in the Washington Post and alerted her husband.

He then thought the similarities were too much to ignore and then reluctantly called the FBI office.

176

u/jmbirn 10h ago

it was his brother’s wife

Yes, and as it happened the wife was a professional ethicist, so she may have played a large role in helping her husband decide to report his own brother.

168

u/PiccoloAwkward465 10h ago

Good thing they lived in a town with a big ethics factory

116

u/snackers21 9h ago

Technically, it was an ethics mine not a factory.

168

u/koleye2 8h ago

It's only an ethics mine if it's in the Éthique region of France, otherwise it's a sparkling moral quarry.

29

u/the_pretender_nz 7h ago

Or in Northern Ireland, a sparkling moral quan-derry

3

u/dontpostfromthis1 1h ago

the brits insist on calling it a quan-londonderry

10

u/Puglady25 8h ago

🏆That was fantastic sir! Take my poor ladies award!

1

u/Datsoon 6h ago

Damn well done

3

u/Haughty_n_Disdainful 8h ago

laughs in ethics cliff diver…

2

u/Desert-Noir 6h ago

And the town over they have a joke and cum mine

2

u/TheGhostofWoodyAllen 4h ago

Technically it was a philosophy mine, and ethics just so happened to be a lucrative byproduct of the philosophy mining.

17

u/jmbirn 8h ago

Yes, the local ethics factory was called Union College.

(The UB's sister-in-law was Professor Linda Patrik, a professional ethicist and philosophy professor at Union College in Schenectady, New York.)

2

u/Stargazer-Lilly7305 8h ago

Can I get a hallelujah!!

2

u/PiccoloAwkward465 6h ago

The first time I visited Union my friend came down to open the front door with an enormous bud of weed in his teeth.

60

u/SuitableBlackberry75 9h ago

The wife was a woman, which didn't sit well with the Unabomber. He was an extreme misogynist who would go on epic rants about women (and the wife in particular), which is a big reason the brother's wife was so familiar with the Unabomber's "style". If he had kept some of his rage to himself, he may have avoided capture, or at least avoided capture for a good while longer.

1

u/hopehallucination 2h ago

Yep, let's turn everything into some gender war bullshit. Exactly what the powers that be want us to do.

37

u/Prof_Outis 9h ago edited 8h ago

I wonder how she feels about seeing all of her brother-in-law's predictions and fears coming to pass? Like, even if he was wrong about his targets, the stuff he was trying to prevent still sucks, and she has to have to wondered if he was right after all.

edit: I'm wondering about the reading comprehension of some of you. Unibomber was a bad guy. He was also afraid of very real things. When a crazy person is right about some bad things and those bad things he ranted about come to pass, it's human nature to question whether he was right about other things and whether the ends might have justified the means. And an ethicist would very much question the ethics of such a Faustian bargain.

14

u/-LsDmThC- 9h ago

Are you being serious? Any number of his claims could be true without it validating his resulting actions. None of what he did served to prevent what he was arguing against.

15

u/Nielsly 8h ago

He was never going to prevent anything you think he wanted to prevent by killing these people, she most likely did not care in the slightest and I find it disconcerting that you have this many upvotes

5

u/ItsSpaghettiLee2112 6h ago

Holy balls take some reading comprehension classes.

3

u/Wise-Relative-7805 7h ago

-And- she and his brother shared the one million reward. Unabomber was right about technology in quite a few ways. That does not even enter the dialogue?!

7

u/SuitableBlackberry75 9h ago

What's that subreddit, "I'm 14 and this is deep"?

That's the Unabomber fandom in a nutshell.

-1

u/Puglady25 8h ago

No, he was a psycho. Didn't he also accidentally kill mail room workers or postal workers? Plus all those CEO's have a conference room of sociopaths, waiting to take the spot.

49

u/Thorngrove 11h ago

No wonder he wrote that letter about hating her right out the gate before he even met her.

15

u/Bahamabanana 10h ago

Bet he wanted to eat her cake and have her.

2

u/PaladinSara 8h ago

Yep - listen to women!

1

u/FuneralFanny 19m ago

His sister in law. Why say “brothers wife”?

82

u/[deleted] 12h ago

2

When those perpetrators get caught, they're going to have to quietly sit with that.

2

u/FriendlyDespot 8h ago

You generally shouldn't use that word at all, but especially not when you're wrong. "Can't eat your cake and have it too" is the original saying, and the one that makes semantic sense. People mixed it up over the years until the reverse became prevalent.

1

u/sajeno 8h ago

Yes, it is correct. You cannot have your cake and it eat it too (ie, you want both). You can have your cake and eat it too, which lessens the meaning. Let's avoid the slurs too, yeah?

0

u/jared_number_two 12h ago

“Load bering smoking gun”. I see what you did there.

86

u/WinterMuteZZ9Alpha 12h ago

The moral of that story is to be an only child, or to share your crazy ideas and political beliefs only with your trusted dog.

The worst the dog will do is go, “Woof, woof, woof!” Then scratch himself, do number two, and go lie down on the comfy rug and sleep until dinner or when he is called. 🐶

Just one more reason to distrust your brother and own a good old dog. 😂

18

u/Photomancer 8h ago

Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend.

Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

31

u/Bread_man10 12h ago

Tell that to Son of Sam

12

u/danirijeka 11h ago

A cat would join you in the planning

1

u/DubiousBrushwagg 3h ago

The cat would also abandon you if it had it's own opposable thumbs and didn't need yours.

2

u/Intrepid-Scar-1849 10h ago

Best advice I've heard ever.

2

u/TheAmazingHumanTorus 9h ago

My Scottie would have ratted me out for a small piece of hotdog.

God, I miss him.

1

u/dimwalker 8h ago

THEY planted a bug inside your dog's collar.

1

u/elfizipple 7h ago

Even then, you must be sure to not speak to your dog within hearing range of a smart TV.

1

u/ChorePlayed 3h ago

You never know what they could get "Fido" to confess under duress.

1

u/Fine_Donuts 2h ago

But Davey, what if the dog started to talk to you?

29

u/Careless-Weather8877 12h ago

His brothers wife did.

31

u/20_mile 12h ago

You're correct. Linda read it first and recommended her husband, David, also read it. David then contacted the FBI through a lawyer.

5

u/SuitableBlackberry75 9h ago

the Unabomber's manifesto (some pretty good ideas in there, actually)

I love how a certain chunk of the Internet fell in love with an essay that would maybe get you a C- in a high school sophomore English class, written by a terrorist. Good stuff.

1

u/20_mile 9h ago edited 8h ago

I love how a certain chunk of the Internet

I love how certain people on reddit just casually dismiss ideas that don't fit perfectly well with their worldview.

fell in love with an essay

And who said "fell in live with"? I said "some pretty good ideas".

It's been 25+ years since I read it, but he talks about how humanity's fascination with technology takes us away from nature and the natural world, and will be our undoing. How much more relevant can you get?

would maybe get you a C- in a high school sophomore English class

How do you know? Are you a high school English teacher?

e: Ah, yes, the brave and valiant way of replying and then blocking so you don't have to be further embarrassed by having to continue the conversation.

0

u/SuitableBlackberry75 9h ago

Perfect! 10/10, no notes.

1

u/IAmAGenusAMA 3h ago

> no notes

Good thinking. Never get caught that way.

2

u/Anxious_Hornet4 9h ago

If were being specific -

David Kaczynskis wife Linda read the manifesto in the paper and said it reminded her of Ted. She urged David to read it which he eventually did.

Then David went and found a proto manifesto that Ted had written in college and left at his mothers house

2

u/aerostotle 4h ago

the unusual cake phrasing and "cool-headed logicians" were critical to identification

0

u/yesimfinewhyyouask 11h ago

Hold the f on, so it wasn’t the “wODDER” guy? Uh maan, why do tv shows always lie to me

-1

u/claypolejr 11h ago

His brother's wife was the first to notice.

1

u/20_mile 11h ago

So said another comment about an hour ago.

1

u/claypolejr 9h ago

Maybe get your facts straight when you post then and then two people wouldn't have to correct you.

-1

u/teacup_24 9h ago

That was the sister in law. The brother was in denial

41

u/IMightBeErnest 12h ago

So do include the phrase "eat your cake and have it". Then the police will think the Unabomber did it, instead of you.

14

u/Simon_Drake 11h ago

I was watching Dexter and he's trying so hard to hide the bodies of the people he kills. But what he should be doing is planting evidence to implicate one of his victims, somehow duplicate his fingerprints with silicone stamps and leave hair samples etc. snatch victims from a 10 mile radius of his house or near his office, gym, dry cleaners etc. So when someone finds the bodies the clues all point to some guy that Dexter had decided was a douche anyway, two birds with one stone.

11

u/chaos_nebula 10h ago

There's a scene where he actually writes a manifesto to throw off the scent, and ends up bringing the focus closer to himself.

0

u/City_College_Arch 11h ago

Or they will think you are the unabomber and release the innocent man that has been in prison for decades.

39

u/Emma__Gummy 13h ago

he was right in saying it like that though, i genuinely did not get that saying until i heard it this way.

2

u/GrowlingPict 12h ago

still a silly hill to literally die on in his case

6

u/RevolutionaryTone738 10h ago

That's why we should all start saying it the way he said it to make the other way weird

1

u/Rotsicle 9h ago

I completely agree. You need to have the cake to eat it, so that order seems rational.

It's like the phrase "if someone tells you who they are, believe them", which is much more popularly said "if someone shows you who they are, believe them".

Like, if there's physical evidence, what am I not believing?

1

u/krebstar4ever 4h ago

Like, if there's physical evidence, what am I not believing?

That's kind of the point. "Don't ignore clear evidence that someone isn't treating you with care or respect."

35

u/pcbforbrains 12h ago

I am 43 years old and only this week did I understand what this phrase meant. It means that you can either physically possess cake, or you can eat your cake - but at that point, you won't have cake anymore. Take that as you will.

39

u/Simon_Drake 12h ago

Which is why the Unabomber thought the phrase was backwards. You can have your cake and also eat it, as long as you do it in that order. But if you eat it then you no longer have it. So the phase should be "You can't eat your cake and have it".

And putting weird phrases like that in his manifesto was a sortof linguistic fingerprint that made people say "Hey I know a guy who says crazy shit just like that..."

19

u/Hairy_Difficulty2562 11h ago

he kinda has a point about the phrase being backwards though

23

u/Save_Canada 11h ago

He had a point about a lot of things. Dude was brilliant, and a psycho

1

u/RMCPhoto 8h ago

If the cake bit strikes a chord with you, I'd stop reading there.

1

u/Rich_Housing971 6h ago

That's a very common mistake people make. it's like saying "ATM Machine" and "Could've" are fingerprinting techniques that the average person would be able to pick up on.

The wife picked up on his IDEAS from his manifesto. Not from phrases he used.

4

u/homerjaythompson 11h ago

It took me far too late into life to understand the as well. Probably because nowadays we often use "have" to mean "eat", leading to confusion between having your cake and eating your cake, which can be essentially synonymous colloquially. Which may not have been the case when the phrase originated.

0

u/vexatious-big 11h ago

It's a silly phrase which I always disliked, and I think it makes more sense backwards. I.e. Eat it and have it at the same time. It's somehow more logical.

1

u/minniebannister 10h ago

Ironic, because 'eat your cake and have it' makes the meaning much clearer than the more common version.

Or his family turned him in...

One has to choose the part or divide the cake.

If you're gonna quote something, at least do it right.
