I made the maclator project very simple to use

Maclator is basically reverse rosetta and the original project was CLI only. I added a GUI, opening multiple arm64 apps at once and added macOS 15 support (confirmed to work) and macOS 14 support (untested), you can get it here if you want to run arm64 apps on your intel macbook https://github.com/miron302/maclator-simplified

Update: I'm still working on a fix for NVMe drives not showing in the installer. I was distracted with getting Tahoe fully working on 11,5. That's now been complete (except sleep) so now I'm fully focussed on Mavericks such as external media installs, updates and it using the MavericksForever script

Phosphor: a menu bar screen utility suite with a feature that eases the flash when you switch from a dark app to a bright one

Hey!

I'm the developer of Phosphor, a screen utility suite for macOS that lives in your menu bar. A bit about me: I'm a solo student developer, you can find me on LinkedIn.

Problem: I mainly started building this around two problems. When people are on their laptops late at night, and switch from a dark app to a bright one, it hits like a flash before your eyes adjust. I looked and couldn't find a tool that tries to solve that problem, so I built one. Phosphor tackles this by dimming a screen before you switch to it, and then easing the brightness back up, at a pace depending on how fast that screen actually is. For screens which aren't bright, it is faster, and for bright ones, it is slower. So it works preemptively.

The other thing is that I feel like there are too many display utilities out there, each doing different things. It'd reduce menu bar clutter and keep things simpler and better if we used one tool instead of several. So I thought of combining the features people actually need into one tool, external and multi-monitor support included (that's a part of what's coming next).

The foundational features have already been released, and I'm actively building more features and improving existing ones (check roadmap for current features and future plans). Let me know what you'd actually use, and I'll factor that in as it grows. I want this to eventually handle most of what people need from their displays.

Comparison: BetterDisplay and Lunar both do display control, but they're broader tools with a learning curve if you just want a few specific things fast. The closest match to Flashbang specifically is Menubar Auto Brightness (based on my research), a tool that sets a fixed brightness per app. Phosphor catches the actual switch and eases brightness back up instead of jumping to a fixed value, though it currently only covers switches on the same desktop, not across Spaces or within an app.

Pricing: It's a freemium model.

  • Pro currently only includes Flashbang Protection, but it'll grow, and costs $10, one-time, not a subscription.
  • The rest of the foundational utilities are free: Color Picker, Screenshots, Resolution Presets, Refresh Rate Control, Soft Screen, Display Schedule, Focus Spotlight, Display Health, Color Grading.
  • If you buy Pro now, you get Phase 2 free when it ships, and 50% off future price increases after that (price increases as more features ship).

Details: macOS 13 or later, Apple Silicon and Intel. Native Swift, under 2 MB.

Privacy: No analytics, nothing about your screen or usage leaves your Mac. It only goes online to check a license key at activation and periodically after. Full policy: https://usephosphor.app/privacy, EULA: https://usephosphor.app/eula

I'd like to hear any feedback y'all have, especially on whether Flashbang's recovery speed feels right, or if it's not catching a switch you'd expect it to.

If something's not working, or if you have any suggestions or anything else you want to say, feel free to drop it into the comments and/or DM me.

Apple Loops Editor back from the death

For heavy Apple Loop users who are disappointed that Apple discontinued Apple Loop Utility, here’s an application that will natively replace it on all newer Macs for free.

You can download directly from my GitHub page here

First launch: since the app isn't signed with a paid Apple Developer account, macOS (Gatekeeper) will show a warning the first time you open it.
macOS Ventura and earlier: right-click (or Ctrl-click) AppleLoopEditor.app → Open, then confirm.
macOS Sequoia (15) and later: the right-click shortcut no longer works. Go to System Settings → Privacy & Security, find the message about AppleLoopEditor being blocked, click Open Anyway, then confirm with your password.

Trying to install High Sierra but gives "application is damaged and cant be used to install macOS"

So i bought this OBS,MacBook Pro (13-inch Early 2011) from a guy and my goal is to restore it, but high sierra wont install and gives the error "Application is damaged and cant be used to install macOS"

MacBook info [From EveryMac website]

Current information

Im using a USB HighSierra installer and it was made by downloading the high sierra iso file, using CMD on windows to convert it to a DMG file then put it on the usb with transmac and yes i did format the usb for mac.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will add the installer log that shows only Errors at the bottom

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What I have Tried

Look for Machine backups

Install MacOS option in recovery mode

change the date to the release date (and a few years before and after) of the OS

attempted a network recovery (but it took me to MacOS Lion recovery mode not High Sierra but still gives me the same issue)

recreating the bootable usb with different methods method 1 was using transmac for a dmg file, method 2 was using balena etcher for the dmg file, method 3 was converting an iso to a dmg and using transmac to put it on there (which worked for me)

put the HDD in my personal computer and use diskpart to clean the HDD and create no partitions then put it back in the macbook and booted it (this is where i got the folder question mark boot screen)

and ive reset the PRAM

contact the previous owner to try to remove it from FindMyDevices and he couldnt find it on there

History of Device

I bought this device from an online market place (so its a second hand device)

previous owner reported the device to boot into the prohibitory screen

when i received the device the battery was a pillow so i replaced that and the prohibitory screen was still there

since i wiped the device with the windows tool "Disk Part" since then ive been booting into the screen with the gray folder icon and the question mark

I made a Mac utility that gives your cursor two new interactions

Built this because I wanted the Mac cursor to do a little more without actually replacing or changing it.

Hold ⌥ Option to magnify anything on your screen.
Hold ⌃ Control to instantly preview files without opening them.

Would love to hear what you think.

Free, open-source Mac app that shows what is filling your disk in seconds

I made Hollow, a disk usage map for Apple silicon Macs (macOS 14+). It draws every file as a rectangle sized by the space it takes on disk, so the big things are obvious right away. My home folder (1.5M files, 202 GB) scans in 5.2 seconds on a MacBook Air M5.

A few ways I use it:

  • Zoom into ~/Library to see which app's caches grew.
  • Filter by file type, minimum size or age to find old videos.
  • Move to Trash from inside the app. Undo works and sizes update without a rescan.

Privacy: it reads only names, sizes and dates, uses no network, and does not download iCloud files while scanning.

Caveats: it is not notarized because I don't have a paid developer account yet. On first launch, right-click the app and choose Open, or use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway. Give it Full Disk Access if you want it to see Mail, Messages and Safari data. Otherwise those folders show as unreadable.

Free, MIT license: https://github.com/yukij3/hollow/releases/latest

It is v0.1.1, so bug reports on GitHub are welcome.

I built a small local-first clipboard manager for macOS and open-sourced it

Hi everyone,

I built ClipFlow, a small free and open-source clipboard manager for macOS.

It keeps a searchable local clipboard history and supports text, links, code, files, images, on-device OCR, collections, automatic content detection, ignore rules for sensitive data, and encrypted backups.

ClipFlow is local-first, requires no account, and has no subscription.

Source code:

It’s still a personal project, so feedback and bug reports are very welcome.
