Weekly Megathread Weekly iOS Battery Support Megathread

General advice for those concerned about their battery from the Support FAQ Wiki:

Battery health

Battery health depends on usage and a variety of other factors. It is normal to see a decrease in battery health by 7-10% per year, resulting in a battery health of 80-85% after 2 years. This number can fluctuate, remain the same, or decrease quickly over a small period and should not cause undue concern.

Apple recommend battery replacement when your device falls below 80% battery health if you notice reduced battery life. If it falls below 80% within the first year you may be eligable for a free battery replacement. It fails after your warranty, it's a $69-$89 USD replacement cost for a battery. Contact Apple Support here.

You can find more information about battery health and performance from Apple here.

You can check the cycles count with Coconut Battery for Mac or iCopyBot for Windows.

Battery life

Issues relating to battery life can be categorised in three ways:

  1. Normal battery life that is to be expected due to use
  2. Reduced battery life caused by a recent update, iOS indexing, an iOS bug, or a third-party application
  3. Reduced battery life, or other abnormalities such as overheating or sudden power-off, caused by device or battery aging

If you experience issues with your battery:

  1. Check your battery health. If it is below 80% or you are experiencing issues you suspect are related to device or battery age, see Apple Support.
  2. If you have a new or recently updated/restored device, wait a number of days for background process to complete. If you continue to have issues, wait for a further iOS update. If you are on iOS Beta, you can expect to have a decreased battery life.
  3. Review the advice below on maximising battery life
  4. Consider restoring your device.
  5. If issues persist, contact Apple Support.

Maximising battery life - the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged.

  • Use low power mode (This reduces mail fetch, turns off background app refresh and increases the auto lock timer)
  • Remove apps from background app refresh
  • Ensure auto lock is on
  • Turn off auto brightness and manually reduce brightness
  • Use dark mode if your device has an OLED display
  • Clearing background apps from the app switcher does not improve battery life

Maximising battery lifespan - the amount of time your battery lasts until it needs to be replaced.

  • Avoid extreme temperatures
  • If you notice that your iPhone gets hot when charging, remove it from its case
  • Store your iPhone in a cool place, switched off, and half-charged if not using it for long periods - and charge it every 6 months when in storage

Discussion Apple store confirmed the new IOS update bricked my 18 Pro Max.

Not sure if anyone else has experienced this. My 18 pro max finally came on Tuesday, and was working great up until yesterday. Woke up to it on the white recovery mode screen. Ran through all the options numerous times and nothing worked, had to factory reset and then it was fine for the rest of the day.

Woke up today, recovery mode screen again. This time I just did the restart option and it worked. Few hours later, happened again and nothing would fix it. Took it to the Apple store near me, was there for 2 hours while they tried to restart, reinstall ios before finally attempting to completely wipe the phone. They weren't able to do any of these, and they said it's an issue with the new ios update on the 18's. Nothing they could do. Apparently I was the third person there today that came in with the same issue.

Worst part is there was no stock, so they just refunded me and I'm back on my 12 after waiting 3 weeks for it to arrive. They said they can't order me a replacement unit, I have to just go online and try to find one in stock again. Overall terrible experience tbh, but just thought I'd make a post and see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

- I am in the UK, I purchased direct from Apple.

This is exactly what we wanted to hear and what Apple needs right now!

I’m really happy that they chose someone whose entire career at apple was being product focused, and now that he’s in the CEO position I’m happy he’s not backtracked to focus on the stock price or whatever.

I’m very excited to see what’s coming next. What about you guys? What do you think of Ternus?

Just started customizing timers and I guess only now realized that Siri cannot differentiate between timers. Anyone else have this problem?

Obviously I can just ask Siri for a set timer but wanted to see if anyone else has this issue

When a Focus mode is active, a button above the bottom controls lets you turn Focus off and back on until you leave the Lock Screen.

When unlocked, the active Focus appears in the status bar above the clock.

18 pm
I noticed a problem when I try to make a phone call. The phone does not ring, so I hang up and try again. My signal bars turn grey for a few seconds, go back to normal, and then the call goes through. This happens a few times a day. Last night, I thought about the AT&T phones having this same issue. Since I have T-Mobile, I wondered if it could be the same thing. I used the support chat to run a test, and it looks like I have that issue too.
They are planning on sending me another device but I rather go in person and them explain to me whole process rather than through the chat so I will be going today

Also ran troubleshooting with t mobile on there end no issues

Discussion Are any of you experiencing strange iMessage glitches on 18 pro?

• Upvotes

I work in a hospital. When going off shift, the coworker following me had the same name as I did (gender-neutral name). I had texted a different coworker about something before I left. Now, I am home, and am somehow receiving the “like”notifications that those two night shift employees are texting to each other. What is strange, is that I am getting THEIR PRIVATE iMessage thread “like” notifications. Has anyone experienced this??

Accessory external drive recommendations for iphone 18 pro?

ok so i am trying to change my life.

i have about 400k photos and videos in my camera roll. and this is after i spent a month in 2023 backing up the 700k photos and videos i had at the time and reducing it to 350kish.

my goal is to gradually move all of these photos to external hard drive(s) and eventually get to a place where i don't need icloud storage anymore (realistically hoping to be in this position by the end of 2027 as there is no way that this is going to be close to reality any time soon).

i want to achieve this by developing a system where i can:

  1. have the ability to gradually work on moving my photos to an external hard drive on a daily basis
    • the idea of this is that i want something portable that i can use on the go whether i'm riding the bus or on a 5-minute break at work. essentially i want to easily "plug and play," that way it becomes a natural thing i do on my downtime rather than a chore/task to complete (bc god knows i won't). and once i complete the great migration, this can just be a natural habit that i do daily/weekly/monthly for all my future pictures.
  2. have a portable drive that i can ideally have with me at all times in case i need to reference a photo from the years prior
    • the main reason i can't get myself to do a true cleanse of all my photos is bc i have such a hard time deciding what to delete. in 2023 i backed everything up but then kept what i thought was important. and deciding what i thought was important was the most time-consuming aspect of it all. i want to remove the obstacle of decision and just move everything i have to the hard drive, but be able to have the peace of mind that i can have it on me at all times so i can access it whenever i need it.
      • this being said, i want something durable that i can theoretically have in my purse at all times for 3-5 years straight. (i plan on upgrading the drive every 3-5 years).
      • the issue with my 2023 backup is that i stored everything on a seagate hdd drive that feels too fragile to ever bring outside my house. it also is more for my laptop than my phone, so besides having the peace of mind that everything i deleted from 2023 is on there, i don't really find any value with the backup since i don't feel like i can access anything easily or at hand.

my plan as of now is to get two ssd drives. one to have with me at all times (portable drive), and one to leave at my house at all times (home drive). the idea is that i will have the ability to move everything to the portable drive when i'm out and about, and when i get home i'll move everything to the house drive so that it's secure just in case anything happens to the portable drive while i'm out.

i think that for my home drive i'm leaning towards getting a lacie rugged hard drive. however, for my portable drive, i want something a lot smaller than this. i know that lexar will have the muse coming out soon, but i'm ideally looking for something trusted and true. i've always been into the sandisk portable, but i know that there are a lot of magsafe options or super compact options out there, and i basically want to know which of them are legitimately good (esp bc everything on tiktok is an ad now).

ALSO, not as important but a thing i am considering--a drive for shooting prores videos. if my portable drive and this prores drive can be the same drive, that would be ideal. however, i am definitely open to them being separate drives. the main thing i want for a prores drive is all the same qualities i want with my portable drive, but with a heavier emphasis on compactness and durability. i want it to be like second nature for me to get this drive out whenever i want to film a video.

ok i think that is all i have to say for now. i am open to all and any suggestions and recommendations you may have. thank you!!!!!

ps: in an effort to combat any possible snarky responses, i just want to clarify that i have already tried adjusting my behavior to take less photos/videos/screenshots. i have definitely took a lot less in 2023-2026 than i have in the years prior, but that's a personal thing i'm working on!!!! the only thing i am asking for right now in this post is for recommendations for how i can get this new storage/backup system set up. thanks!!!!!

Support iPhone 17 suddenly showing white Green Screen

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I was using my iPhone 17 normally when, all of a sudden, the screen stopped working. Now, whenever I turn it on, the display lights up with a white-green color, and I can’t interact with it at all.

When I try to force restart it, the screen just flickers white and green.

The phone hasn’t been dropped or damaged. This happened completely out of nowhere.

Has anyone experienced something similar or know what might be causing this? Could it be a display issue, a hardware problem, or a software bug?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion iPhone 4 with new internals

• Upvotes

I was wondering if I can take in iPhone 4 and put newer internals in it, maybe like an iPhone 13 mini? or and iPhone se. but I was wandering if I do a 13 mini is there a display connector breakout board out there? I really like the form factor of the iPhone 4 and I like tinkering, so if u guys know any way I can squeeze a newer iPhone into it let me know. also could I add Magsafe? and could I only use one camera if I do a 13 mini, also it would be like a proof of consent so I don't care if it looks like a hack job. and is there any way if it not an iPhone 13 mini if it has a home button to just ditch it entirely? and also if it is a 13 mini how could I get a smaller screen that would fit the whole footprint of the phone. and if I can't do a 13 mini and use an iPhone se could I pry the screen/digitizer off the iPhone 4 and put the iPhone se screen/digitizer under the iPhone 4's front glass panel and use software tweaks to resize the iPhone se's screen. I'm also very for real about this so Id really like answers.

thanks

Support I have a question about my iPhone

Post image
• Upvotes

So I dropped my iPhone about 130 feet. It's not doing amazing, thanks for asking. Although the phone does turn on and receives text messages, several things about it don't work anymore. Half the screen doesn't work, the cameras are all smashed, touch input doesn't register. Stuff like that.

I can plug the phone into my computer and it registers the USB cable, but it wants to be unlocked to "recognize the device" or whatever.

QUESTION: I'd like to backup the phone one last time, is there some way to externally do any control of the screen or something?

Could there be a hope of temporarily replacing the screen to regain enough function to unlock it? So I can connect it to my computer to back it up.

Siri is not enabled

Discussion Weird bug with True Tone?

So I have an 18PM, and I have noticed this weird bug on the lock screen where the display looks colder / without True Tone. As soon as the device is unlocked via FaceID the warm tint of True Tone comes back.

Wondering if anyone else has noticed this? Trying to figure out if it’s a hardware issue or a software one.

Support Went from iPhone 16 to 18 pro, system sounds are incredibly low, is this common?

This is a really weird issue, but I’ve just upgraded from the base iPhone 16 to an iPhone 18 pro.

Everything has been fine but the system sounds, notably the keyboard clicks, lock sound, etc.. are insanely quiet.

Ive gone to setting and changed the sliders to max, I’ve even tried changing the setting to have them on their own volume and still nothing. Has anyone experienced this before? It’s not necessarily a problem, just a bit concerned if it’s an issue with a speaker or something else. It’s noticeably quieter.

Discussion PSA: moving from Android 17 to iPhone if you use WhatsApp

Today, I found myself having to help a family member transfer her data from an Android phone to her new iPhone. I did this very thing myself a few years ago and found the process pretty straightforward, so I thought it would be the same. Unfortunately, it looks like things might have changed more recently, at least for some users.

For those who may not be aware, Android 17 has a native “move to iOS” feature baked right into the OS. So much so that if you go to the Play Store and search for “move to iOS”, it says the app isn’t available and you’ll basically be forced to use the built-in feature, or so you would think. Unfortunately, she found out the built-in implementation is half baked and doesn’t allow you to transfer WhatsApp data to your iPhone whatsoever. However, after experimenting a bit (she thankfully held off on logging into iPhone apps and wiping her android) there is a workaround.

Apple is probably aware of this, so they actually offer an APK for the move to iOS app that, despite what Google claims, actually works fine on at least some Android 17 devices. They have several different versions, but you’ll most likely want one of the versions for Android 6.0 and up. I ended up installing and running the 64-bit version on her Google Pixel 8 Pro and it transferred all of the selected data, including WhatsApp, to her 18 Pro Max without any issues. The only thing it couldn’t seem to transfer was her eSIM but that was also the case with the built-in transfer.

One thing to note: you may need to allow restricted permissions for the app on the Android device for it to transfer SMS.

This was honestly more complicated than it should have been but at least it works. Hopefully they can officially resolve this going forward if Google really wants to directly replace the Move to iOS app.

Discussion Siri lengthy timeout

Something I find kind of annoying in iOS 27 is after I use Siri (via voice prompt), even for something minor, the Siri dialog box stays on my screen for what seems like an unreasonably long time.

Is there any setting that can adjust this timeout, or do I just have to swipe to dismiss Siri every time to get my screen real estate back?
