Highlight [Highlight] Jokić with a cross-court behind-the-back pass to Cam Johnson for a three pointer

wtf???

u/Commercial_Case_5373 5h ago
Nah this is actually crazy because the only time he saw Cam was when he first caught the ball. His eyes never looks directly in the corner until he passed and he threw it right to Cams chest lmao

Pass is still amazing, but I'm pretty sure he can track him in his peripheral during his dribble.

100%
The court vision isn't even the amazing part, it's the logistics of this type of pass. It's so hard to throw a cross court pass under the hoop. It's a cursed area of the court and that's part of why every defense wants to force you into that location as a ball handler. This might be the best pass I've ever seen.

After nearly a decade I'm still not used to the fact that the best passer in the NBA looks like my old building super in Chicago.
168
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 4h ago
it's so funny to me that the only reason this pass is effective is that the defenders wouldn't even consider it an option so they have a moment of confusion lol.

Kind of pass I believe I have in my bag at the rec, only to hit the Zumba oldheads on the other court.

Just tried this in my backyard and I don't even understand how he gets that much power with that pass much less that accuracy
The force that whipped through my shoulder felt like I just threw a baseball as hard as I can

His wrists are like mortars. He can just effortlessly shoot from mid court with just his wrist.

Funnily enough Cam bricked a wide open 3 off another utterly insane Jokic dime early last season (i think it was preseason too). Happy he made up for it here

The fact he was ready for that pass is an excellent sign that he’s going to take a step up this year

To be fair to Cam, he played great in our playoff series vs Minnesota. Big reason I was hoping we’d keep him this year. Started really slow but found a great groove by the end of the season.

Hate to sound hyperbolic, but I think he’s clearly the best passer of the 21st century
153
u/IcyCantaloupe6374 Spurs 4h ago
I mean that isn't hyperbolic. There is a good chance that he is literally the most talented passer to ever play basketball thus far lol. Gotta remember he's doing that when the game is at its current peak. There are a handful of other guys that were great but they might not look so good if they tried to play at the current NBAs level its impossible to say really but he's definitely at least in the running

I agree and would go a step further and say he firmly in conversation for the passing GOAT. I didn’t get to see Magic live but it’s hard for me to think of someone who has better highs, more highs and less lows.
10
u/thudlife2020 3h ago
I watched Magic live. He was special in his day but Jokic is a better passer hands down imo.

Magic is the only guy I’d put above him without seriously questioning it
16
u/supert0426 3h ago
Im gonna be honest this feels like Steve Nash erasure. Every single team that Nash played on between 2002-2008 is a top 50 offensive team all time by relative offensive rating, largely because of his passing and creation. Magic is the only other one who is even comparable in that regard in terms of seasons spent leading an all-time great offence as a pass-first player.
7
u/MaskedBirder 76ers 3h ago
People dismiss Nash, especially in relation to his peers, but he's definitely one of the best passers of all time. His ability to run an offense is definitely up there. He wasn't some overrated loser who stole two MVPs. His low scoring averages don't do justice how incredible his ability to facilitate was. I saw a video saying there were eight or nine people that deserved MVP over him. Say what you will, but that's kinda a stretch. He elevated his team.

People over focus on his defense while ignoring that a lot of his bad defense comes from a lot of their guys aren't good defenders, and its legitimately better for him to stand there and give up the open layup than contest and foul. He has his weaknesses, hence why he can't contest without fouling like wemby/AD and the like, but thats the reality of a slow big man in the modern nba.
