The only surprising thing here is that the cop took action.Ā

u/MahaliAudran 11h ago
Maybe he rides too. Cops that ride enforce seem to enforce more of the traffic laws that are hazardous to bikers.

For these kinds of merges, I always assume the dork behind me/in my blind spot does not know how to merge safely.
So depending on their position to me, I defer to these approaches: if they are behind/to the side of me Iāll speed up to maintain leading distance into the merge. If they are more in front, I slow to let them go ahead while maintaining my speed/position and watching for idiot #2 behind me.
Some drive try to rush the merge and beat me to the front, I assume out of panic. I let them go, Iād rather they hit a car in front of them than me on my bike.

u/Dwarfdingnagian 37m ago
Part of defensive driving. Instructor told us you can't assume the other driver knows any of the rules of the road.

Iāve been riding motorcycles for 40 years. Iām not convinced I would have been riding bikes for 40 years if I chose to live my life trying to school AND berate idiots in cars that do dangerous things.

I donāt know Kyle but I think you just created a new genre of motorcycle video, where instead of running from the cops, you run to them.

u/ratscabs 11h ago
The well-known aphorism about graveyards being full of people who were in the right springs to mind.
21
u/Mr_ETL 11h ago
Iām not sure how that applies to this video. Dude stayed out of their way, saw a cop, and got them involved so they could deal with it. All the people saying theyād knock her mirror off, on the other handā¦
Look, Iāve been riding for three decades, most of that in Phoenix. I can read when to drop a gear, and when to be more proactive. Iām not stupid. In this situation, I have zero issue with how this was handled. YMMV.

Yeah. Theres so many riders who shouldn't be on the road. When your ego is so fragile that you'll basically allow a car to run you off the road rather than just brake slightly and go on with your day you need to get off the bike

The rider is a complete retard either drop a gear and disappear or roll of and drop back don't ride like an NPC pacing the car in the lane beside them trying to play a game of chicken. Never sit in a lane next to a car longer than necessary.
16
u/gheiminfantry 11h ago
Trying to physically argue with a vehicle that is 10 times your size and 50 times your weight isn't very smart. There is literally 2 Karens in this video. How much physical pain are you willing to endure to be right?
5
u/TheFriendOfCats 10h ago
Roll off the throttle, honk your horn, and give them the finger. Wait until the next light, lane filter, and leave them sitting in a line of traffic.
3
u/SavingThrowVsWTF 11h ago
Okay, but Iād rather let idiots pass me and return home in one piece than be correct and go to the morgue in a bucket.
3
u/estrangedpulse 11h ago
Why youāre so aggressive? Just let guy merge. You really should experience driving on European roads. Itās crazy to me when someone tries to merge when thereās plenty of space and then acting like they are murdering you.
2
u/know-it-mall 3h ago
Yea pretty much. Sure the bike has right of way but it's really easy and polite to just slow down a bit well before it gets to this point and let someone in.
7
u/BeenisHat 8h ago
This is what we call an idiot on a motorcycle. Even if you have right-of-way, a car still wins.
6
11
u/Sushipocalypse 12h ago edited 11h ago
A normal rider would have anticipated that car was taking that space whether intentionally or not and just let them have it. It would have taken something as minor as just rolling off the throttle to avoid all of this. That rider basically went and tried to bring the full force of the law down on that lady over 10ft of road. I feel this is actually pretty pathetic on the riders part.
Even tells the cop she tried to run him out of the lane which is blatantly false. He put himself in that position and now he's lying to law enforcement trying to get this person in legal trouble. I couldnt imagine then also taking the video of you being a massive tool and posting it online.

Old lady got a ticket - maybe that'll save someone down the road, so to speak?
0
u/silentbob1301 11h ago
.... The person in traffic has zero responsibility to yield to the person attempting to merge. Wtf are you talking about? The rider was keeping a safe distance to a large vehicle that literally can no longer see them if they get to close.
The only person in the wrong was the old lady who doesn't understand/doesn't care about following the law or endangering other drivers
6
u/Jorvik287 11h ago
Old lady was in the wrong but the laws of physics don't care about that when it's cage Vs bike so rider should have played it more defensively when he saw her driving like a twat
5
u/AdultishRaktajino 10h ago
The graveyard is full of indispensable people, many of which had the right of way. Or something like that.
1
1
u/Sushipocalypse 11h ago
The safest thing to do would have been just to yield to the car that was obviously taking the space and not put your safety on the line and then go lie to the cops to enforce merging etiquette. The rider escalated an easily avoidable situation over a perceived slight.
2
u/silentbob1301 11h ago
Lie to the cops, she literally forced her way into the lane. He didn't lie to anyone, the only person that broke the law was the lady that refused to yield to traffic already in the lane she was attempting to merge into.
Whether you think its stupid or not, the biker had no responsibility to yield space to her.
2
u/jeffie_3 11h ago
I have has it happen to me several times. I once had a woman look me in the eye and pushed me over into another lane. I ride a Harley so it is not a bike you can really miss plus it is loud.

This isn't a zipper merge tho. The two lanes don't merge together, the right lane ends. You can tell this because the dotted line goes all the way to the solid line at the edge of the road.

First time this happened to me a woman had jumped the lane to force merge on a light when her lane was turning and mine going straight (itās a UK thing) I was a squid and banged on her window.
Now I just either let them have it or zip fw. Theyāre stuck in traffic. I can go wherever I want.
No need to confront mental illness on the road as a biker

1
u/Brewingbiker 1h ago

u/WillHo01 11h ago
Not defending her driving which was atrocious btw but why do people start swearing at people immediately. Like of course they're going to get annoyed.
Especially on a bike, do that to the wrong person and they can just run you the fuck over.
4
0
u/Pinche-Guero 10h ago
Ummm... looking at the camera... she's in front, and speeding up to merge zipper style.
Kind of an indication to back off the gas a little or maybe tap the brakes and let em merge.
If you are coming from behind or even speeding up to "possess the lane" instead of letting them in...
You're the asshole
1
u/know-it-mall 3h ago
Except this isn't a zipper merge so the bike has right of way.
Now would I have just slowed down and let her in? Probably. But she didn't have right of way.
-1
u/HeftyArgument 9h ago
yeah car 100% is in the right here, biker has main character syndrome.
1
u/know-it-mall 3h ago
This isn't a zipper merge. Bike had right of way.
Yea he could have just let her in but the car is not right here.
1
1
u/coreyjdl 11h ago
This is on you, drive defensively. Yeah, maybe it was "your spot," but who gives a shit? Is your bike not fast enough to make up the slight delay??
1
u/One-Possibility-8182 10h ago
Most of the time.... there isn't a cop there to help you!!! That's why I carry " Back up Beads "!!!
In my riding jacket, I carry 8- 1/4 inch stainless ball bearings. Simply releasing over my right shoulder is enough! Sometimes it takes a 2nd one to hit the mark. They're the perfect size to web a windshield! And impossible to prove!!
And if they complain to a cop...... it was simply road debris
1
u/Historical-Reveal390 9h ago
The general rule in the United States is that if the right lane ends and the people in the left lane have the right way, and the people on the right have to merge. Vice versa, if the left lane ends.
1
u/westwardnomad 9h ago
The general rule is also the the drivers in the lane being merged into should be cooperative and let people over.
The more important rule of physics says a car is much larger than a motorcycle and trying to "hold your ground" in this situation is a good way to get badly injured or killed.
2
u/Pugnados 6h ago
Wrong, the unchanged lane doesnāt have to accommodate the lane that is ending. She had ample warning it was going to end and she couldāve slowed down and moved over when it was clear.
1
u/Exact-Pattern-3919 5h ago
And if they were accommodating which they should be, the rule is ZIP merge, but she wanted to get behind the truck and both merge and leave the bike out? Why is ignorance so stubborn? Oh wait, thatās how they got here
1
1
u/Historical-Reveal390 1h ago
Under Texas Transportation Code § 545.061, drivers entering a multi-lane roadway or a freeway from the right must yield the right-of-way to vehicles already traveling on the road or in the lanes to their left.
Just Texas law, but a lot of states are similar.

1

u/Heel-and-Toe-Shifter 11h ago
ESH
0
u/silentbob1301 11h ago
No you suck, and clearly don't understand how to merge either. It's not on the vehicle in traffic to yield, it's on the person merging. It's dangerous on a bike to get too close to the rear of large vehicles, because they literally can't see you. The only person in the wrong here was the old lady who clearly didn't give a fuck about following traffic law.
4
u/Heel-and-Toe-Shifter 11h ago
As an experienced rider myself, I know that the riders first responsibility is to protect their own safety, not to put it at risk to try to "educate" dumbass cagers. That's a fool's errand
0
u/silentbob1301 11h ago
I don't disagree, when I was riding I prolly would have slowed down and stayed behind her. But it doesn't change the fact that she was in the wrong. I know, I know, you can be correct and still get pasted by an idiot in a car.
1
u/Heel-and-Toe-Shifter 10h ago
"ESH" stands for "Everybody Sucks Here," an abbreviation borrowed from r/amitheasshole. By posting that comment, I was not absolving the cager of responsibility. You have contradicted yourself by stating that she was "the only person in the wrong" and then acknowledging what the rider should have done instead.
2
u/silentbob1301 9h ago
I know what it stands for lol
1
u/Heel-and-Toe-Shifter 7h ago
And yet somehow you still thought I was defending the cager. How did you manage that
1
u/silentbob1301 7h ago
I didn't think you were defending them, but I don't put anywhere near as much blame on the rider as I do the car. Technically the biker didn't do anything wrong. Could he have taken the safe route and let her merge ahead of them, yes, of course. But he was legally in the right. Legally doesn't do you any good if you get ran over, I get that.
-5
u/Just_passing-55 12h ago
Loss of wing mirror privilege would of been a better outcome.
12
u/Honcho_47 11h ago
Except Iāve seen that happen then the car driver escalates to running the motorcycle off the road or running them down. You never know which drivers are a busted mirror away from losing the last bit of sanity they have.
1
u/Jumpy-Impact3265 9h ago
Unfortunately.....this.
It's wild how fast a cager can go from 'whoopsie' to 'ima fucking run you down for making me feel stupid' or whatever is holding their ears apart.
1
u/Just_passing-55 11h ago
Yeah, in my heat I know that's the right answer
3
u/Silver-Engineer4287 11h ago
That mindset⦠will eventually have a very unwanted outcome for you whether it makes you feel better in the moment or not, whether you realize that youāre escalating the idiot driverās misunderstanding or selfishness into an actual crime of vandalism or property damage (now committed by you) versus a traffic infraction (by them) or notā¦
Plus⦠even a Fiat 500, Mini Cooper S, or other compact cars can chase you⦠allow you to make even more bad decisions, run you off the road, run over you⦠and they might get ticketed for it or go to jail for it but which one of you is more likely to suffer life changing injuries or die from it?
Better yet⦠youāve just broken their mirror⦠unaware that they have a gun⦠youāve just threatened their castle⦠giving them legal permission in many regions, under duress, to defend that castle⦠which includes shooting you⦠which they couldāve tried without the broken mirror in a case of road rage and wouldāve be a lot more wrong for it legally⦠but that doesnāt change the outcome for you either way.
I canāt tell you how many times Iāve ended up in the same lane space as another deaf, dumb, and blind idiot driver who ānever saw youā and I just managed the situation like every other time it has happened to meā¦
Granted I also own my lane and maintain an ever evolving exit strategy escape plan for when another blind idiot fails to see the motorcyclist so I almost always have a space to shift into⦠and I know when to continue owning that lane and when to choose the idiot avoidance exit plan⦠and with decades of riding in a mix of highway and urban commuting⦠Iām still here, still riding, never broke anyoneās mirror.
2
u/Forsaken-Count-2738 10h ago
Probably the best comment here.
Yeah people seem to forget that even someone who can barely hobble through life is extremely capable of throwing some lead at you, whatever the legality of doing so is. Around 20 years ago, when things were still only semi insane, I took my concealed carry permit class. I have walked away from so many situations where I was completely in my legal rights to stand my ground and possibly use deadly force just because of all the other things involved with dangerous situations. You can be 1,000% in the right legally and still go to prison, and even if you donāt, still have problems for the rest of your life. Like, REAL problems. The guy who taught me to ride had someone cross center line and because he was tweaked out of his gourd he spent years getting surgery and even now, 40+ years later, is still hobbling around like completely crippled.
These guys smacking mirrors are really playing with fire. Youāre literally a flick of the hand on the steering wheel, even if itās an involuntary response, and youāre on the fast track to the pearly gates.
7
u/sausage_ditka_bulls 11h ago
No. Just no. I ride . Never escalate. And this rider should have just slowed if he values his safety . Yes she was in the wrong but aināt worth it. Ride defensively if you wanna live . But I get it. Cars pull this crap all the time . I have learned to let it go. Sometimes I may pass them down the road and put my hand up like ācome on manā but thatās it . Do not engage do not try to block a 4000 pound car with a 500 pound bike
5
u/11teensteve 11h ago
I think the old clichƩ goes something like "the cemetery is full of people that were in the right".

3

1
u/11teensteve 11h ago

2
u/sausage_ditka_bulls 8h ago
I started riding at 40. Iām 47 now. I had the advantage of being older and wiser when I took up riding . 25 year old me would have been a different story . I ALMOST pulled the trigger on an r6 back in 2004 but hindsight Iām glad I waited. I now ride an xsr900 and can do hooliganism if I want but I do it sparingly and normally just enjoy my bike .

u/SluttyMuffler 11h ago
One thing ive never understood about this is why take away MORE visibility from an already shitty driver? Ya it costs money to repair but how often do they really? Instead leaving a busted mirror and endangering more people.
0
u/Just_passing-55 11h ago
Argument is they were not using it anyway. Lookout for yourself on 2 wheels because noone else is.
1
u/SluttyMuffler 11h ago
Right, because one mistake warents property destruction resulting in an inability to correct behavior? Thats some egotistical thinking dude. Then again I rode for years being that exact egocentric biker pissed at the world. But that just isn't how life should be navigated, and I hope one day you can place your anger and hurt into something more productive than hurting others with an internal justification of self preservation.
1
u/Just_passing-55 11h ago

Plus, snitching to the cops is really pathetic
5
u/Some_Breath_6682 12h ago
Agreed that the biker really could've and should've avoided this but... People that use the size of their vehicle to bully others are assholes and deserve to be ticketed.
4

2

2

Using the term snitching is a huge tell to your overall mindset.

u/JohnT36 11h ago
The retard on the bike doesn't know how to merge.
It's called a zipper merge for a reason
2
u/schwanerhill 11h ago
Yeah. Itās at least arguable that the car had the right of way, since she was ahead at a zipper merge. The motorcycle tried to run her off the road once she was in the lane. Regardless of whether the carās actions were appropriate, the motorcyclistās action after the merge ā continuing to ride aside her once she was in the lane ā was clearly wrong and dangerous. As is focusing on looking at her and yelling at her instead of keeping his eyes forward on the road.Ā
2
u/Deep-Adeptness4474 11h ago
While I agree the rider is a dipshit, using zipper, she should have fallen back using the one each idea. Truck from right, bike in main, then the Karen.
2
u/11teensteve 11h ago
this is a good point. it should be like the rules on the track. whoever's front wheel in in the lead gets the spot. just ease up and let her in and go on with your life.
1
u/know-it-mall 3h ago
This isn't a zipper merge tho. The dotted line goes all the way to the edge of the road so therefore that lane ends rather than the two lanes merging together.
You are the one who needs to learn to drive buddy.
0
u/coreyjdl 11h ago
a proper zipper and it would have been the bikers spot, otherwise agree. sometimes you yield defensively and move on with your life.

Merging is left - right - left - right ⦠. In this case truck - car - bike.

1
u/know-it-mall 3h ago
That only applies at a zipper merge where the two lanes combine. This isn't one. The right lane ends.
-2
u/ThaCasual 10h ago
Merging traffic has right of way. You make room
4
u/Senior_Cheesecake155 8h ago
Thatās 100% the opposite of the law. Whomever is in lane thatās ending must yield to those in the lane theyāre moving into.

Is it different in Canada? I was taught in driver's Ed that merging traffic has right of way.

In the US, merging traffic must yield to the traffic thatās already in the lane.

In America, the faster traffic has right of way and if needed a merger has to yield to the traffic
In an ideal situation it works like a zipper , but you mostly get people who have to being in front of another car to save 1 second0

That is how we do it here. With respect mind you. They are literally neck and neck. Iād argue that the biker overreacted. I donāt think heās at fault (by a couple seconds). Just because he took a āvideoā and found a sympathetic cop, he probably got off alright. The kids language is pretty awful in any case. Definitely the mark of a young person. How many times have you called your mom a āBitchā eh?

Dudeās gonna get wrecked when/if this goes to civil court. Whether by the judges or public opinion. There could be a harassment charge somewhere in there. This is exactly why you donāt share road rage incidents that youāve captured on video to social media. And share it twice.. the lesson here is: Donāt be an entitled douche bag

in general where I am it's kind of like racing, if the car is ahead of you it makes sense that you give way because at that point if they brake for you you're hitting them.
dickheads like to ignore this though and more or less guarantee that accidents happen.

If it's a zipper merge where the two lanes combine. Sure.
This isn't one. The dotted line goes all the way to the solid line at the edge of the road so her lane ended and she must give way.

The biker was definitely trying to start something there and the car had nowhere to go
