Real estate/Renting 18F, looking for advice about finding a rental in melbs

i've already posted this in the unimelb subreddit, but wanted to put it out here too :)

hi! i plan to study at the university of melbourne next year, and have been looking around at sharehouses at websites online (mostly fairy floss + flatmates.com) to get a feel for the climate and have found a pretty steep majority of sharehouses in around the inner suburbs area ask for people in about their mid-20s and above.

i come from a lower-socio economic region of regional victoria, so could possibly qualify for a naarm scholarship that could assist me in getting into a residential college, but even then i don't really like my chances, especially as i'll probably have little/no financial support from my parents and will likely rely on part time work.

would defintely prefer a sharehouse lol to alleviate some rent expenses lol :,-)

just asking for any advice from people who may have been in the same boat, especially recently, as a 18 year old turning 19 student looking for a sharehouse in around inner-north melbourne or atleast somewhat close-ish to the parkville campus

any advice helps!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks :)

Tbh I’d be shocked if there were any student budget friendly properties remaining in that area. The 20s requirement is probably less of a function of not wanting students, and more of a function of wanting a housemate with a stable income.

I’d be looking on the metro line in the inner west. Parkville is in very easy reach from Sunshine etc

Probably will struggle to find anywhere close that's affordable. New metro route goes right to Parkville so I'd try and look somewhere out Inner West that's near a station. Should be much more affordable.

Some of the residential colleges offer quite generous scholarships to those from regional and low socio-economic areas and the shortfall can be made up with work in the college and government assistance. But applications close in a few weeks, so best to apply ASAP. The Naarm Scholarship application closed several months ago, though, I thought?

With the Metro Tunnel and Parkville station, you don't need to live in the inner suburbs. Just live close to the Sunbury/Cranbourne/Pakenham lines and you'll be fine, far more options this way (and even more if you own a car, and can do earlybird free trains - train station car parks fill up at 7am)
