I think the skipping is the adrenaline and excitement of a child. Disappointing as it is, these are just children who need a bit more help.

u/food_WHOREder 1d ago
nah i think most of us have had the same thoughts even as kids ourselves. it's just worrying when they're getting into these older-teen ages and it gets harder and harder to break those habits, and our justice system only kind of leans towards rehabilitation for underage people. it's a million times harder when the clock ticks over to 18yrs old and suddenly punishment is more important than rehab
14
u/TrueMudkip 23h ago
Totally, I think “rehabilitation” needs to be the priority over everything else particularly before the age of 25ish. Throwing kids in prison really doesn’t do any good, despite what people seem to think. Personally I can’t see this as just a Melbourne or Victoria thing, there are similar issues happening all over the country and large parts of the world. It just seems to be highlighted so extremely in Victoria in the media and then online

It's so weird to see people on Reddit so ignorant on this topic and less educated than the general public in 1970's Australia, where they knew that the answer to this was a liveable economy and more activities to do outside because kids bored, broke and sequestered outside are in fact the best recruits that a gang member could ask for.
So many here are brainrotted thinking their taxes are somehow some sort of bank they deserve access to instead of the cost of living in a successful and good society. If my taxes go to helping stop this shit by making housing cheaper through socialised housing, making more parks, having consistently run and open community events, such as a government funded YMCA program and government sports programs i would be happy to see such amazing progress.
Those are the fixes, we know they work, because they have worked, suddenly we banned all the kids from their phones with a world with nothing to do, i mean shit even the shopping centres have banned loitering for adults and the kids aren't allowed around without a parent. So they go do this shit, literally just history on repeat with a general public too dense to even notice it till someone keys their car or nicks their wallet.

You have zero issues but that is (sometimes frustratingly but most of the times reassuringly) not how the law views violence towards people who legally are children.
It's difficult when said children are behaving in a way that makes you want to remind them they're children, but the security guards and the little shits both know how the game works sadly.
The thing that really frustrates me is a lot of the times kids like this have startlingly functional legal literacy about how hard it is to actually hold them accountable for their behaviour, and they exploit it ruthlessly, at the expense of everybody who has the misfortune of being nearby at the time.
159
u/I_Am_The_Bookwyrm 1d ago

u/Retireegeorge 20h ago
I woukd agree about 'children' and the restraint that security woukd be expected to use, however, there are some factors at play here that would be considered. 1. The youths pose a threat to the public including small children. 2. The youths are actively engaging in fighting to prevent them being held for police. 3. Security are to some extent practising self defence. 4. Security are not using weapons or techniques aimed at threatening the lives of the youth. Eg stomping, choking, blows to throat, attacking eyes, breaking bones, driving into pillars and other concrete.

65
u/MichelleHartAUS 1d ago
I've done security, to them, this is just an incident. They're not high on an adrenaline rush, seeing red from whatever someone, and so they have a clear head. It's a huge advantage and also means that you're not going to be acting mindlessly.
They're doing a job, and often that job involves de-escalating or physical intervention.
There's an adrenaline dump afterwards, and often some hilarious reviews of security footage by coworkers.
They're also going to mostly be pissed off that now they have to do a bunch of paperwork.

What's actually more remarkable is that most of us don't act like this.
For most of the last quarter million years or so, young males likely acted like this, only with more bloodshed.
If you watch the way they run around, shouting, making hit and run attacks, and only piling on when they have the advantage - it's uncannily like what we see in in primate and hunter-gather skirmishes.
It's only prevented when there are strong cultural (including family) mechanisms to prevent or redirect it. So something is definitely breaking down when young males are resorting to basically primate behaviour.
