Playstation 5 Emulation on Linux

Hey everyone,

since my newsfeed has recently been exploding with PS5 emulation stuff, I’ve reached the point where I realized that it’s not really emulation, but more of a translation layer similar to Proton. So, I had an idea and I’d love to hear your opinion on whether it would be doable. Specifically, creating a translation layer that you could plug into the Heroic Game Launcher, just like Proton, that would allow us to play PS5 games the same way we play Windows games?

AnyPS5 is already doing a conversion layer so you could just plug that into heroic

That name is a bit confusing, not until I saw another commenter link to the github, I thought you were referring to any ps5 console emulating their own hardware πŸ˜…

this^ and considering they're working on a linux build like alot of emus do ( granted this is recomp i believe from what i read a few hours ago when i seen it )your not gonna need proton nor whatever launcher most likely

All that game launchers do is execute commands that feed game binaries (eg skyrim.exe) to the compatibility binary (proton) with a set prefix directory.

If the translation layer exists, you could easily make a launcher (or modify an existing one) to invoke it, if you knew the commands to run in order to start the game. Hell, you could just write a couple of scripts to launch individual games.

I was thinking more along the lines of, you have a menu where you select your translation layer and you're done. Just like I can now choose a different Proton version.

I mean, that's still just a matter of studying how the translation layer invokation works and tweaking it for a different version, if you even want to do that.

Most people just run xyz translator-latest.

You are right. I looked at the AnyPS5 code and it seems like a solid foundation. Maybe i can do something with that.
