guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0
old.reddit.comHere’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).
This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.
You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.
Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

Witcher 3 Remastered: save loads taking 60+ seconds on GE-Proton / Proton Experimental? It's XInput, and there's a fix
If loading a save in the Witcher 3 remaster takes you a minute or more on Linux, this might be why.
My loads were 1:07 by stopwatch, every time, on a 9850X3D with the game on NVMe. So obviously not hardware. After the fix below it's about 19 seconds.
While the loading screen is up, the game polls for a controller (XInputGetState) in a tight loop. In newer Proton builds, Wine's xinput re-scans every HID device each time you poll a slot that has no controller in it. Each scan is a pile of registry lookups, and every one of those is a round trip to wineserver. I measured around 300,000 of them per second on the game's main thread, for about 55 seconds straight. The actual loading only takes a few seconds at the end.
So if you play on keyboard and mouse with no controller plugged in, the game spends most of the load screen looking for a gamepad.
I checked the xinput1_4.dll in the Proton builds I had installed:
- GE-Proton11-7: rescans on every call
- Proton Experimental, Proton Hotfix, Proton-CachyOS: same
- Proton 10.0 (10.0-4b): doesn't, it only rescans in a background thread
Run top during a load. If wineserver is sitting at 40% or so of a core for the whole loading screen and then drops to basically nothing once you're in game, that's it.
Fix
Use Proton 10.0's xinput DLLs for this one game, while staying on whatever Proton you like.
Install "Proton 10.0" from Steam if you don't have it
Copy its two xinput DLLs next to witcher3.exe and patch one string in them. Adjust the paths if your Steam library is somewhere else:
cd ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/"The Witcher 3"/bin/x64_dx12
P10="$HOME/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Proton 10.0/files/lib/wine/x86_64-windows"
for f in xinput1_4.dll xinput9_1_0.dll; do
cp "$P10/$f" . && chmod u+w "$f"
printf 'Proton10 xinput\0' | dd of="$f" bs=1 seek=64 conv=notrunc status=none
done
The dd line is needed because Wine's own DLLs have a "Wine builtin DLL" tag in the header. If Wine sees that tag on a DLL in the game folder, it ignores the file and loads its bundled one instead. Overwriting the tag makes it treat the copy like any DLL a game ships with.
- Add this to the front of the game's launch options:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="xinput1_4,xinput9_1_0=n,b" %command%
If you already have launch options, just put the WINEDLLOVERRIDES part at the start. GE-Proton appends its own overrides to it, so things like OptiScaler and the FSR4 upgrade kept working for me.
To undo it, delete the two xinput DLLs from bin/x64_dx12 and remove the override.
Caveats
- Only tested on my machine: GE-Proton11-7, Fedora, AMD GPU, no controller connected.
- I haven't tried a controller with the swapped DLLs. It should still work since it's just the older xinput, but I can't promise.
- Just running the game on Proton 10.0 should avoid the problem too. I didn't go that way because I wanted to keep the GE stuff.
- Plugging in a controller might also help, since the rescan only happens for empty slots. Didn't test it.
This probably isn't specific to Witcher 3. Any game that polls XInput constantly with no pad connected could hit the same thing on these Proton versions, it's just very visible here because the game does it during loading. If you've got a game with weirdly long loads or stutter and wineserver is busy the whole time, might be worth a look.

I turned my old OnePlus 8 into a Linux gaming handheld.
Android is gone was replaced with mainline Linux with Steam Game Mode. Windows games run through Proton ARM64 + FEX, while the Adreno 650 uses Mesa/Turnip.
For now I’m testing mainly on the OnePlus 8. Steam Game Mode, controllers, audio, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth and Windows games are working.
Project on Github: GabrielCRadu/ARMDeck (I'm not sure if I can post links)
It’s still work in progress. There’s no one-click installer yet, and porting it to other Snapdragon phones still needs work (and probably it is a pain in the butt).
*Tomb Raider 2013 30+fps on low settings*
What games should I test?
Send me the weirdest or most interesting Steam games you can think of. Especially games that probably shouldn’t work on a Snapdragon 865.
Also, if you have an old Snapdragon phone somewhere, tell me the model. The goal is to get ARMDeck running on as many devices as possible.
Testing, device ports and Linux/ARM contributions are welcome.

gamedev/testers wanted Help me test Tyto's demo on native Linux before it releases?
Hey guys!
Tyto is a gliding-based 2D metroidvania where you play a lost owlet searching for its family.
Traversal, platforming and combat are all based around gliding and flight.
Tyto's demo releases in 6 days and I want to make sure that it runs perfectly on native Linux.
I'm looking for 4-5 people who can playtest it and help me make sure everything works properly.
If you're interested, please leave a comment / DM.
Thanks! 🦉

tech support wanted CachyOS small quirks starting to get to me, opinions on other distros like Nobara?
I have been on cachy for like 6 months and gaming has been great. However, I am running into small quirks here and there that take a couple of hours of troubleshooting that have started to become really annoying.
Artifacting only on desktop after sleep https://discuss.kde.org/t/artefacts-and-screen-flashing/49941/2?utm_source=chatgpt.com
Logitech mouse scroll and regular sensitivity all over the place after sleep restart
Logitech webcam mic not working
Monitor switching annoyances
Im sure there are many others I haven't mentioned over time. These are probably not enough to make me stop using it but was wondering if something like nobara is less tinkery? Or straight fedora. I really liked how all the gaming stuff was behind a simple install.
7800x3d
4tb nvme
9070xt
edit: This will be for about 80% gaming as I mostly use my mac for everything else.

tech support wanted Help with formatting a drive?
Honestly, I don’t know whats wrong with whats going on, I’m relatively unfamiliar with linux. I’ve only been using it for half a year.
I have most my steam games on an external hard drive, the ones installed locally work just fine.
The thing is that some steam games are working off the drive and some aren’t. I’ll select the launch option, they’ll load vulkan shaders, show the launching icon on the play button and then just go back to the green “play” icon.
Specs:
Linux mint 22.3
30gb ram
dell g15 5510
xfce 4.18
intel i5-10500h
Drive filesystem is NTFS
Games that work so far:
Deathroad to Canada
Rimworld
Blasphemous
Games that don’t:
Deadlock
Brawlhalla
Vampire the masquerade: Bloodlines
Eldenring Nightreign
Civilizations VI
Fallout 76
Speedrunners
I’ve followed some guides, the only thing I havn’t done in those guides is install steam snap or fstab. It used to be that none games would work from the drive but I set the owner for the drive and that made three of them that didn’t work before start to work.
The external drive I’m running the games off of is an old 1tb SATA drive I got from an old laptop. I’m wondering if there is an issue with the amount of ram the drive is being allowed to use but I have nothing to justify that suspicion except for the games that are launching being really small. I also suspect that some of the games that don’t work won’t ever work because of the type of anticheat they use (Nightreign, 76, Brawlhalla), that being said, they shouldn’t just fail before launch.
I’m grateful for any and all support.

Updates: Currently reformatting to ext4

hardware Looking for recommendations for a good controller for Linux that's under $100
I really liked my 8bitdo controller ( https://a.co/d/0g6Xa1Wx ), but the trigger went out on it and so I'm looking for something new. In order, I'm looking for the following...
Just works in Linux with zero hassle/setup (in and out of steam).
Wireless
Reliable sticks and buttons/triggers. Im not abusive to controller but play lots of racing AND games with shooting, so both the sticks and triggers get heavy use.
Haptics/Rumble, I hate "dead" controller feel (I don't need something shaking violently in my hand or anything), tho I absolutely don't expect anything like the PS5 controller
I really like back paddles thanks to my 8bitdo, but not a deal breaker.
Easy repairability (this is low because I know it can be a more expensive feature to easily replace those simply and tends to be a feature in very premium controllers).
Some I'm looking at - https://a.co/d/0aJRjtqa
Is there newer 8bitdo controllers than the one I had with superior/more reliable triggers?
Thanks in advance everyone!
EDIT - steam controller availability is not until some unspecified date in 2027 and thus is not an option, but thank you for the recommendations for it!

Getting Unity Mod manager working with games under Bazzite (Heroic launcher)
Hey all, trying to figure this out as I just can't find any directions on how to get this running. UMM install directions on NexusMods say to use Mono, but I can't figure out how to install that under Bazzite- no directions I've found actually work. (It's a Fedora derivative but the Fedora directions I've found don't work)
I tried ading UMM as a non-steam game to Steam as suggested by someone else, but that didn't get it active in my game- possibly because the game I'm trying to use it with is also not a steam game (It's from the Epic games store, I'm using Heroic Launcher to run it).
Any suggestions? I'm pretty new to linux.

I made a free open-source physics game called Slock
I’ve been working on a game called Slock.
You play as a little red jelly block, except you don’t actually move the block directly. You tilt the world and gravity does the moving.
The basic loop is pretty simple: collect pellets to keep time on the clock, avoid the Swurms (green worms that slide along the map), grab powerups, clear the section, and keep climbing. The levels are procedural generated levels and get denser/more difficult as you progress.
It’s fully playable now, but still very much a prototype. I’m working on better textures, models, sound and the rest of the art side of it.
The whole thing is completely free and open source. There are Linux builds up already, and the source is there if anyone wants to mess with it.
I develop it on Linux, so I figured some people here might get a kick out of it.
Basically, just a show an tell. I'm not a game developer by any stretch of the imagination - but I thought I would give it a shot.

Games crashing and massive slowdowns on both Zorin OS and Fedora (Wayland/Xwayland errors)
Hi everyone,
I've been experiencing severe crashes and massive slowdowns (spikes) while playing specific games, namely Dead Space Remake, Elden Ring Nightreign, and Kingdom Hearts.
Initially, I was using Zorin OS, but the issues were so frequent that I decided to do a clean install of Fedora KDE (formatting my entire SSD). However, the exact same issues persist.
After checking some logs and crash reporters, I noticed this seems directly tied to Wayland and Xwayland conflicts. Here are the main errors I'm getting when the games crash or stutter:
- A segmentation fault related to
screencast losoin KWin. - Massive log spam from
xdg-desktop-portal(which seems to cause the frame drops/spikes). - Fatal errors where
/usr/bin/Xwaylandand/usr/bin/plasma-keyboardcrash unexpectedly, closing the game entirely.
These videos [Insert Link/Upload Here] show exactly what is happening during my gameplay sessions.
My PC specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 7600
- RAM: 16GB 2666MHz
- Storage: 256GB WD Green SSD + 1TB WD Blue HDD
- Motherboard: ASRock A320M-HD
Has anyone else with an AMD GPU faced these specific Xwayland/portal crashes? Could this be related to background apps trying to capture the screen, or is there a definitive fix for Wayland besides just falling back to X11?
Thanks in advance!

graphics/kernel/drivers Sorry for the bad quality, I'm wondering if I can get help. I have no Idea what is going on. Every time I have a specific image or tab open my monitor gets streaks across the screen like a bad display port. I thought my GPU was dying at first but it runs fine.
Could this be a kernel issue that needs fixing? And it's definitely not my display ports because I just got two new ones.

guide Medieval 2 Total War mods and EOP on linux
As my original post was removed and some people have been asking about it I've decided to repost it. I’d also recommend having a look at this guide on Steam:
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3536136501
Hello, I had some problems running Medieval 2 Total War mods with EOP (Engine Overhaul Project), couldn't find any useful noob friendly guide so I decided to make one myself. Maybe it will be useful to someone.
- Start by installing STL (SteamTinkerLaunch). You can easily find guides how to do it on your distribution, since I use Arch I did this by running "yay -S steamtinkerlaunch" command in console. After it's installed you have to restart Steam.
- Right click Medieval 2, choose properties and in general tab set launch option like this: --features.mod=mods/EBII. Replace EBII with folder name of mod that you want to play, this one is for Europa Barbarorum II.
- In compatibility tab choose Steam Tinker Launch.
- Run the game by Steam, then you will have to quickly click main menu on STL window or the game will run. Now click game menu button on the bottom, set "Use custom command" and "Only custom command". In Custom command choose M2TWEOP GUI.exe in the mod folder. Click save and play.
That's all, after setting things up next time you can click skip in STL window and play the game. If you want to play other mod you will have to change launch option in Steam and set different EOP.exe, just repeat steps 2 and 4.

Very Strange Loading Behavior in Witcher 3
So when I went to Velen, the load times jumped, leaped actually, to around 3 minutes. I thought it was a mod, or the new game, or maybe because I was using the proton that enables RT.
Basically what would happen is that the loading bar would jump about 1/4 of the way and stall out (I use a mod that blocks the "recap"). Then when I hear the wind in the background the rest would load normally from then on.
But the other night I tabbed over to my browser because I was bored waiting, and the load jumped very quickly. It all loaded in an amount of time I would expect. So now I've been alt-tabbing to a browser clicking on something, and then watch the load jump ahead. It's very weird.
Then I thought about the whole account login. At first I logged into my account and at some point I logged out, but got a couple of login requests that I thought I had ignored, but then noticed I was logged in again. So I logged out.
So I wonder if the game is doing some kind of network check or something when loading a level? I don't know. I'm kind of puzzled. It's almost like the game doesn't like me ignoring it or something.
Any suggestion - or anyone seeing similar behavior? Or unexpectedly long load ins?

wine/proton Is it possible to disable FSR3 and fallback to FSR1 on VKD3D?
on DXVK, there's a FSR1 option that I always use and it runs very great. However when I use VKD3D, the FSR1 option is gone and has been replaced with FSR3, the problem is my GPU (RX 580) is not supposed to uses FSR3 and when I use it, the performance is very terrible compared to FSR1.
I could just stay on DXVK but I want to use VKD3D. So is it possible?

Pes19 problem
Title: PES 2019 via Lutris/GE-Proton: gamepad detected but no input in game (works in browser, evtest and Wine apps)
Setup:
- Arch Linux (Hyprland/Omarchy), Dell Precision 7520 (Quadro M2200 + Intel HD 530)
- nvidia-580xx driver 580.178.04 (Maxwell GPU)
- Lutris 0.5.22, GE-Proton11-7 through umu-launcher 1.4.4
- Prefix: ~/Games, game: Pro Evolution Soccer 2019 (PES2019.exe)
- Controller: Twin USB PS2 Adapter (two pads)
What works:
- The game launches from Lutris on the Nvidia GPU.
- /dev/input/js0 and js1 exist, evtest shows the button presses.
- hardwaretester.com/gamepad in the browser shows all buttons working.
- Keyboard works in the game.
Problem:
- In joy.cpl (Proton prefix), the pads only showed up under XInput and the DirectInput list was empty. After using "Override" they appear as DirectInput and the game now says it detects two controllers, but pressing buttons does nothing in the game.
- joy.cpl's test window shows no button movement.
- Settings.exe (Controller tab) shows a normal mapping (Button 0-11, Hat Switch for the d-pad). The settings.dat checksum changes when I save, so it does write, but the pads still don't respond in game.
- AntiMicroX works in Wine apps (Notepad) but its key presses don't reach the game, even with --eventgen uinput.
What I tried:
- joy.cpl: Override for the XInput devices, toggling "Enable SDL" and "Disable hidraw"
- Copying settings.dat from a plain ~/.wine prefix into the game's prefix
- AntiMicroX with xtest and uinput event generation
- Running Settings.exe inside the same Proton prefix as the game
Has anyone got a Twin USB / PS2 adapter working in PES 2019 under Proton? Is there an env var or a Proton version that handles DirectInput for this kind of pad? I can post the Lutris log (lutris -d) if it helps.

Recent Cachyos update broke Genshin Impact for me
So I updated cachy yesterday and everything works the same except for genhsin which now only shows a black or transparent screen.
Using epic games through heroic launcher, all the overlays and thing are disabled.
I have tried proton cachyos, ge and DW, none of them improved anything.
And for clarifications the only thing that doesn't work is the screen, I can hear the sounds of the game.(the launcher and opening the game works as well)
This is the error heroic keeps repeating in the logs
'
(lsfg-vk) [ERROR]: An error occured while initializing the lsfg-vk swapchain:
(lsfg-vk) [ERROR]: - -1000000001
err: Presenter: Failed to create Vulkan swapchain: VK_ERROR_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

info: Buffer size: 1280x720

I have tried messing around with fullscreen and launching the game exe instead of the launcher but it didn't help.
It worked perfectly before the system update and can't really find anything that helped online, so that's why I'm here.
Thanks in advance. :)

new native/FLOSS game King in the Mountain now has a native Linux version! + Steam Deck experimental
King in the Mountain now has a native Linux version! :)
If you like base-building + mining games, give the demo a try.
The latest version includes a native Linux build, and it should also work on Steam Deck, although I haven’t been able to test it on a Steam Deck yet. I did test the game with an Xbox controller.
I’d really appreciate any feedback from Linux or Steam Deck players, especially if you run into any issues!
