Room full of men watched that happen. Good for her for ending it

1.2k

u/GimmieGummies Official Gal 1d ago

Seriously. It takes a lot to stand up to a group of men like that. RHCP have some great music, and all the allegations I've heard about over the last 5+ years have turned me off of them.

286

u/garkle 1d ago

Same here, can't listen to them anymore. Makes me feel gross

161

u/putyourlightso 23h ago

Agreed. On a road trip last week some RHCP came on and I instantly asked for a skip, when I told my buddies why I don’t like RHCP (they knew I was a big fan as a teenager) one of my friends said that it’s common with rock stars to go after much too young roadie girls, I shut that shit down, and asked if when his daughter turns 13-15 and hooked up with a rockstar that makes it okay. It was momentary friction and a bit awkward in the car for a bit. Later that trip the friend who excused it randomly brought it up again and agreed that just because it’s common doesn’t make it okay. I’m glad he agreed but it was kind of crazy I had to be like “think of this as a father” before it clicked for him

81

u/ArblemarchFruitbat 20h ago

Oh I know a lot of men who didn't see women and girls as people until they had a daughter of their own

109

u/Aggravating_Chair780 19h ago

They still don’t. It’s just that those particular women are an extension of themselves. So they can feel personally aggrieved that another man would disrespect him through ‘his’ women…

38

u/ArblemarchFruitbat 19h ago

That's an excellent point I had not considered, thank you

25

u/NaIgrim 20h ago

General empathy is not as common as we hope it is. Sadly some people need to actively imagine the direct consequences as if it happened to themselves to realize why it isnt ok happening to someone else.

124

u/omyomo 1d ago

I learned bass because of Flea. I felt like a dumbass when I learned about the gross stuff the band did

97

u/ready_gi 1d ago

it's hard, because so many cool male artists professionally were complete sexist assholes in their personal lives including stealing and copying women's work or exploiting our energy into their care and home building.

It's much harder to find the decent ones, so i wouldnt beat yourself up about a male musician inspiring you even though he's a sexist, it's not your fault that most of them are.

54

u/tigm2161130 20h ago edited 12h ago

My husband is a professional musician(not like RHCP levels of fame, they usually play to 10-15k) and he always says one of the most disheartening things about what he does is the rampant misogyny and general disrespect towards women by other men in the industry.

I got a taste of it myself when Morgan Wallen called me a squaw at an industry party in 2019 before he was really anyone.

27

u/Hetstaine 19h ago

Wallens music sucks just as much as he does.

12

u/DadCelo 17h ago

That’s gross, but totally believable coming from him.

17

u/DTFDownToFrolick 18h ago

A squaw?! Jesus wept

6

u/tigm2161130 12h ago edited 8h ago

lol yes, I’ve been called a lot of things…the most common was “prairie n****r” when I was a kid but I felt like he was busting out the generational racism/misogyny with the whole squaw thing.

3

u/DTFDownToFrolick 12h ago

I don't even know what he was trying to convey with that one.

5

u/tigm2161130 11h ago

The entire thing was something to the effect of “you’ve got one mouthy squaw” directed at my husband when I said something he didn’t care for in conversation.

Their OG lead guitarist, John Frusciante, is fantastic and had a solid indie solo run when he stepped away if your into that style. Both he and Chad Smith seem like ok dudes given their fame and the fact that they are considered legends of their respective instruments. Anthony Kiedis and Flea can eat a bag a dicks though, they should both be rotting in jail.

41

u/sitafalak 1d ago

John Frusciante was not their OG lead guitarist, Hillel Slovak was

50

u/Helpful_Section5591 1d ago

Except for allegedly giving River Phoenix the speedball he overdosed on at the Viper Room.

20

u/Lookitsanthony8 1d ago

Damn i never heard that

25

u/therude00 1d ago

John was a major addict in the 90s - there is video of him in his home in the mid-90s and he's almost unrecognizable. I don't know that you hold a user at fault for another user's OD.

44

u/ElProfeGuapo 1d ago

Chad Smith is apparently a real douchebag though. Frusciante sounds OK, but then again, he also willingly hung out with those maniacs for many years, so, who knows.

4

u/Snitsie 23h ago

Maybe that's why he was a drug addict lmao

Once he got clean he realized all his bandmates were assholes and decided to go solo

2

u/tweetopia 19h ago

Here is Anthony telling us the other band members are ok dudes because they stood back and turned a blind eye to what was going on around them, and probably didn't actually rape anyone. You study at Cornell, Anthony?

48

u/satinsateensaltine 1d ago

Worse, there is video of them basically assaulting adult women on live TV. You don't even have to go to the other stuff to feel squicked.

133

u/chibiRuka 1d ago

“It takes a lot to stand up to a group of men like that”. I don’t think it takes that much for another man to stand up to them. I hate when men call women cowards when those same won’t even fight an equal fight with another man.

I am afraid about 99% of male celebs are like that, because if men have power they will 99% use it against women as soon as they can.

238

u/GimmieGummies Official Gal 1d ago

True. And looking back, I'm very aware of how sexist things used to be so prominent in the entertainment industry, and unfortunately still are. At this point I think it'd be easier for us if we could just identify the decent folks among all the racist rapey people. It's shouldn't be that hard to be a nice, normal person with some manners. Right?? 🤷‍♀️

The RHCP are some of the biggest pieces of shit in the music industry. Just terrible, terrible people, in all honesty. Every story I've heard about them makes my skin crawl a little. Obnoxious. Gropey. Rude. Arrogant. And straight up into statutory (IYKYK).

2

u/Apprehensive_Flow99 17h ago

That’s crazy, it’s not really my genre of music obviously I’m aware of them and know some of their songs, but the way they’re put on a pedestal you would never know. I’m not saying it’s OK but when I think about how Chris Brown is and has been blasted for years. (Not a big fan of his just using the example as it’s a genre I’m familiar with) why have these men gotten a pass

15

u/SimplyaCabler 1d ago

Not really allegations when you write about it in your autobiography.

26

u/Hm46290 1d ago

They make dogshit music.

14

u/RhynoD 1d ago

They made one good song and then made that one song again and again. Their whole career is just beating the same dead horse.

Anthony Kiedis. He admitted in his memoir, to having sex with a 14 year old.

This clip is just one of a few I've seen of him behaving like this towards young women (e.g. unwanted and inappropriate behavior). But the other members of the band are just as culpable since none of them ever did anything to try and stop him.

264

u/RuinedEye 1d ago

Anthony Kiedis. He admitted in his memoir, to having sex with a 14 year old.

Worse actually.

He raped her, then found out she was 14, then raped her again, then BRAGGED about it in his book.

As a Sassy reader waaaay back in the day, they reported that at a concert, Flea pulled a female fan onstage and humped her out of nowhere. The writer said she burned her RHCP tapes and would never support them again. Of course, the RHCP were about to pop off as that issue came out.

43

u/JacksLungs1571 1d ago

There's a story were I believe at least 3 of the members were given a "slap on the wrist" for sexually assaulting a woman on a beach (totally forgot it was at the mtv beach show). It was a part of a larger short documentary about the RHCP being scummy. This woman's story (not This interview) was a part of this documentary.

this isnt it, but says enough

I dont remember if this is it, but again... says enough

Big fan of Faith No More and Mr. Bungle... 100% fuck RHCP.

9

FNM are one of may fav bands and I love how Mike Patton makes Kiedis's feud with him look so stupid and petty.

46

u/More-Entrepreneur-52 1d ago

Seriously, theres a video i saw once from an old interview where they were basically chasing the one woman interviewer around and she literally hopped over a couch to try to get away from them. The other male interviewers looked confused and uncomfortable but didn’t do much at all to stop it

21

u/Unhappy_Performer538 18h ago

24

u/Crunchyfrozenoj 16h ago

It’s a fear response. Freeze and fawn. I’ve done it too.

64

u/James_2584 1d ago

This video of the Chili Peppers on James Whale's show is even worse. They descend on Cleo Rocos like a bunch of wild animals. Groping, harassing, and flat out assaulting her while she looks fucking terrified and even calls out for her mother.

The fact that they did that on camera tells you all you need to know about what they're like behind closed doors.

They all belong in prison, especially Anthony Kiedis for bragging about raping a 14 year old girl in his autobiography...both before AND after he learned about her age.

18

u/TheDigitalBuilder 1d ago

What the actual fuck

6

u/Glittering_Meet3206 1d ago

oh my fucking god

4

u/hane1504 1d ago

Extremely cringe worthy!

7

u/AbsoluteZeroUnit 1d ago

Okay but can we acknowledge the multiple men that were trying to hold these dudes back, tell them to back off, and defend this woman? The host took off his jacket so she wouldn't be exposed on TV. The clip also ends with that host beating one of the guys with a hat, trying to get him to stop. I see a lot of comments from people who want men to stand up to men behaving like animals, but here we have a great example and it gets crickets.

I have the logo tattooed on my back. And I learned much later that they did awful shit, but I never really thought of the tattoos...until one day in the dead of summer the heat was stuck on at a music rehearsal I attended. I took my shirt off and rehearsed in my camisole and realized I was a 43 year-old woman with that tattoo and I was legit embarrassed.

26

u/BrokeEggs_NoOmlette 1d ago

We should start a support group sister. I used to be a DIE HARD fan, grew up listening to them and got super into their whole discography in college, had some lyrics painted on my car among other things. Now at 38 I can't listen to them without getting annoyed. Its mainly kiedis and his voice as soon as it hits im grossed out and feel embarrassed by how into that shit i was. Ill still listen to frusciante though haha.

I was thissssss close to naming my son after the original bassist. In the end I think we should just love the women we were back then that loved music and what we believed it stood for. It really was never about the men anyway.

205

u/LifeguardBig8530 1d ago

We live in a society that protects and glorifies predators.

48

u/DelayedTism 1d ago

And elevates them to the highest positions of society

122

u/SinkyBundleOfRage 1d ago

Are we surprised? No. Disgusted and appalled? Absofuckinglutely. But not surprised. Look up all the stuff that Kiedis has done to underage girls, and then come back and tell me that we're surprised 😤😤😤

7

u/Nice_Commission3770 20h ago

We can just call them girls if they’re “underaged”. Nobody seems to say “overaged”, which I guess is 18? If she’s an adult she’s a woman, if not, she’s a girl. And if he’s a man, an adult, he needs to be accountable for his behaviour.

7

u/Unhappy_Performer538 18h ago

I think we should say little girls and boys. That drives home the point that they’re children which people try to erase or minimize

2

u/Nice_Commission3770 13h ago

I can get along with that. A 17 year old may reject it however.

2

u/SinkyBundleOfRage 15h ago

I used the term underage because often people call young adults "girls" still (ie. A woman who is like, 25 years old, will still get called "girl" in colloquial conversation). They absolutely fucking should face consequences, but realistically? I'm 99.9999% sure they never will. Which is infuriating.

6

u/Nice_Commission3770 13h ago

I know, I didn’t intend it to call you out, I understood. I just think we need to stop normalizing adults as children and vice versa. There’s a line, no matter how “mature for her age” someone is.

164

u/Bitter_Orange_1557 1d ago

Ever since that passage in their memoir I have boycotted them in my mind. Fuck them.

66

It's not an allegation if they brag about it. Kiedis is a rapist and had no problem announcing it to the world.

//The reply to me was removed or deleted, so to elaborate: a fourteen year old cannot consent to sex with a twenty three year old. That is currently, and was at the time, rape. He knowingly had sex with a fourteen year old and put this fact in his 2004 memoir. This is what he will happily admit to for the public. I only wish I had known about this in the early 2000s, I'd have stopped listening to them back then. But I wasn't into memoirs and biographies as a teenager.

Anthony Kiedis is the predator in the band. He fucking sucks. The rest of them may have their various issues but none are remotely what he is.

One could of course argue that the rest of them are just as guilty by having chosen to continue associating with him for decades, but then by that logic you'd need to stop listening to almost any major rock bands ever.

Edit: I dunno, maybe they do all suck. But AK is far an away the worst and IMO his is the name people need to be screaming.

I'm curious if it was Anthony specifically or all 4 of them were doing it?

39

u/Dance-pants-rants 1d ago

Moms are rad, but holding a fucking boundary and being apparently the only professional on set is not mom-like behavior.

Woman does her fucking job despite a group of shitheads behind and on camera doesn't sound particularly matronly.

Just competent and emotionally healthy.

12

u/Colambler 1d ago

I took her "I'm like a Mom" comment to just give added emphasize that she was having to set the boundary repeatedly and clearly with them like you would with a children.

10

u/Dance-pants-rants 1d ago

I get that, but the language infantilizes behavior that is not childlike, it's a power play.

That dude is a repeat abuser who looks for people he can control and saw her as another target.

It feels like referring to boundary setting and holding as "mom-like" also casts the behavior as non-adult and in the "boys will be boys" space. It kinda makes the tactic feel ineffective bc the underlying behavior is viewed as unstoppable or inevitable, like reasoning with a kid.

I get the inclination and parent analogies can be useful in a lot of settings. Maybe she needed to soften the facts in this interview, idk.

I would just feel uncomfortable calling myself a mom in a situation where I was being systemically and directly sexually harassed.

3

u/Nice_Commission3770 20h ago

I like this take, thank you.

10

u/sensualpigeon 1d ago

I understand how thinking of someone else could have helped her enforce a boundary, though. I disassociate easily and was raised to people-please, so shutting down assault has been a struggle for me. Thinking of my boyfriend gives me extra strength to stand up for myself.

3

u/secretlythecat 15h ago

Yeah...I'm sorry. It's an awful watch. I can't believe I loved this band when I was 14. In hindsight, it's a good thing my mom never let me to go any concerts.

5

u/El_Scot 21h ago

That's awful! Don't think I'll be listening to them again.

2

u/secretlythecat 14h ago

I stopped being a fan a long time ago but I loved them so much when I was 14 :(

16

u/Melodic-Advice9930 22h ago

I was just having a conversation the other day with someone about how so many bands I listened to during middle school have some pretty fucked up people in them

Lostprophets, anyone? Ugh.

2

u/agent58888888888888 18h ago

I hate to say it, but before I found out i found some of the lyrics and videos weird. After they felt wayy worse

2

u/Difficult-Sock343 18h ago

Lostprophets is the worst one ever, and there are some really bad ones out there!

15

u/iolarah ❣️gal pal❣️ 1d ago

Go Erica! She was one of my favourite Muchmusic VJs back then. I had no idea that she had to deal with that, but I'm not surprised :/

14

u/zbornakssyndrome 1d ago

The lead singer has always dated teenagers

10

u/Unhappy_Performer538 18h ago

The lead singer has always raped teenagers. Fixed that for you

14

u/Temporary_Taro_1300 1d ago

Thank you for saying something about these guys. It feels like they someone slipped past the me too movement.

9

u/Prior-Razzmatazz-206 1d ago

Damn good for her

10

u/MessyChick37 1d ago

Gotta love how it's "good TV" to sexually assault women.

28

u/tinfoilfascinator 1d ago

I have always hated that band, and the more that gets revealed about what disgusting creeps they are, the more justified I feel.

9

u/sacredblasphemies 1d ago

Fuck the RHCP. Scumbag perverts...

9

u/SecretWordisBird 13h ago

Sorry but those guys have always been super gross. I’ve never liked their music because I can’t stand them.

9

u/The_Three_Meow-igos 1d ago

Good.
That’s how you should treat people acting like children. ESPECIALLY men who don’t know how to fucking act without entitlement.

2

u/Nice_Commission3770 20h ago

Especially while acting like children they treat children as if they’re adults. Stunted.

8

u/ReturntoForever3116 13h ago

Can we just cancel this band already?

60

u/NovaRain84 1d ago

I pirated their music and that makes me feel less bad for liking it. 😬

15

u/frenchornplaya1983 1d ago

What disgusting pigs. Should be in jail.

And their music is just mid. Talking about CA in every song, the same fucking chord progressions over and over.... Fuck em

8

u/Unhappy_Performer538 18h ago

There are MULTIPLE videos of them molesting women ON LIVE TV. They used to be my favorite band until I learned this 😭

15

u/notabagofteeth 1d ago

I've seen numerous videos of rhcp being creeps to women on tv. I wish them nothing but the worst.

They were one of my favorite bands as a kid/young teen, even went to see them live and was so excited when they played my favorite song, but then I found out about Kiedis raping a 14 y/o and I just couldn't listen anymore. I thought about pirating it instead but still, it just wouldn't feel right, it's just too disgusting.

6

u/Swimming_Ninja_6911 1d ago

It's called 'Boundaries' and that is how it's done. Good for her. (Shame on all the rest of them - seriously wtf?)

6

u/Bozo_Dubbed_Over_ 18h ago

Keidis talks about sleeping with a 14 year old in his book. Always been trash.

4

u/cbmom2 1d ago

Same org that let Ben affleck literally group a woman’s breast on tv.

5

u/dream_a_dirty_dream 1d ago

Once a predator, always a predator.

4

u/joeactually 19h ago

Anthony is a huge creep. Fuck him.

4

u/shittykitty329 15h ago

Damn. I never liked that band.

11

u/Revolutionary-Egg351 1d ago

There is no such thing as a good man in the music industry. I stopped being a musician because of how common this kind of behaviour is amongst men in the scene. Shit like guys claiming to be progressive or having progressive values as a form of leverage in order to get closer to women, and then acting in a completely different way. At its best its hypocrisy, at its worst its lying with malicious intent.

4

u/Nice_Commission3770 20h ago

I am supremely confident in Pearl Jam’s integrity, so please, please don’t shatter this for me.

4

u/00Desmond 18h ago

I’m always repulsed reading about all the horrible stuff that so many music acts have done. I like to think it’s not all of them, though. I’ve never heard a creepy thing about Weird Al. Or really anything negative in general.

He does admit that some of the words in his songs can be offensive so he avoids using them now, so maybe that’s a knock against him?

Ione Skye’s memoir is an amazing read and she talks a lot of about her relationship with Ak in it and how horrible he is. The audible is esp good because she’s narrating!

4

u/mancan71 14h ago

Good to know my mom already hates this band’s music.

5

u/SunnyGirlDD 14h ago

Erica Ehm was my teenage icon growing up, I think she’s the cat’s pajamas

7

u/cardlord64 1d ago

One of many reasons I stopped listening to, or enjoying, rhcp. Them and Aerosmith just don't exist in my music selections anymore.

3

u/Careless-Two2215 23h ago

Faith No More was always better.

3

u/SkywardPhoenix 22h ago

Maybe we should rename having balls of steel to ovaries of steel

3

u/Takkotah 19h ago

Gross...

3

u/shalekodemono 9h ago

I'm glad this shit would not go down on this day and age

8

u/Exotic_Insurance2164 1d ago

It took me seeing them live to realise that their music is rather mediocre.

14

u/whatthedna 1d ago

What do you mean, you don’t like the funky bass lines and lyrics that sound like “she’s a slamma jamma, down in California. Mama mama, we all tried to warn ya.”

7

u/Gina_the_Alien 1d ago

Bip bop bih doo bih yabba dabba yobba / yip yap and slap my doggy’s gonna slobba

Seriously say that out loud in your head and tell me it doesn’t sound like RHCP lyrics

2

u/Exotic_Insurance2164 1d ago

Ugh, don't remind me.

Also, nice MSN Messenger shout out in your pfp.

Saw them live years ago; Kiedis didn’t even acknowledge the audience and spent most of the concert with his back to us, Flea did a 23 minute trumpet solo, and they didn’t play Under The Bridge. Never again.

I was just discussing this with my girlfriend today. Nonchalantly assaulting women is so commonplace that it’s just accepted. As if we’re expected to just put up with it and men get a pass like it’s okay because they don’t know that what they are doing is assault. Cornell is on fire right now and not enough is being done to keep women safe.

16

u/OnceMoreWithFeeling- 1d ago

"They were doing it live."
"That's worse."

That's not worse. That's just also really bad. All assault is worse.

51

u/chaibaby11 1d ago

it worse bc more people didn’t stop it. don’t be disingenuous.

I think the point (besides what the other comment already said) is that if they're bold enough to do shit like that in front of a huge audience, imagine what they're capable of in private.
