Not sure if you actually play WoW anymore, because in retail is sort of assumed that your character is the same as from Vanilla, like... that's the whole point.

They've gotten rocky with certain unnamed expansions, but over the whole. It isn't our story, never has been.

And people have regularly complained that retail keeps having NPCs come in and take all the glory instead of the player character because of this misunderstanding.

Case in point; In the Den of Nalorakk dungeon, you clear the dungeon and the 'trials' and then Zul'jarra (an NPC) is just waiting at the end for you and quite literally says "What took you so long?" because they've been there for ages. Then you take a few minutes to kill the last boss and she swoops in and steals the last hit.
