Help Would learning analog stick make more sense than chasing the perfect d-pad?
I’m an absolute beginner at fighting games. I’ve enjoyed them casually since childhood, but never really got into them until this past July. And man, I’ve been having a blast with SF6.
One thing I’m still struggling with is finding a controller with a D-pad I really like. I’m currently using the latest revision of the DualSense, which seems to have improved the D-pad somewhat. I’ve tried quite a few alternatives, too. Some, like the Victrix, feel noticeably better to me, but they also cost roughly twice as much.
Whenever I read controller discussions, there seem to be complaints about D-pads: missed diagonals, stiffness, inconsistent inputs, etc. It also feels like the D-pads on standard PlayStation controllers have gotten worse over the years.
That got me wondering: would it make more sense to learn to play with the analog stick?
My thinking is that analog sticks on standard controllers seem more consistent across generations. You wouldn’t have to find a specific fightpad you love, only for it to get discontinued or redesigned with a worse D-pad.
I know personal preference plays a big role, but am I overlooking any major downsides to using analog? For those who use it, how comfortable and consistent is it for motion inputs, especially in actual matches?
