This is a perfectly fine anagram but the tense is wrong. "[Definition] (is) anagrams [fodder]" doesn't make sense*. What you want is "[Definition] (is) anagrammed [fodder]", so "Indian, for example, smashed canoe". OCEAN is CANOE "smashed", not "smashes".
* There is an intransitive sense of the word anagram but it requires "to". "Ocean anagrams to canoe" but not "Ocean anagrams canoe".

The clue could be more general, it didn't need to be so Pacific.
