It's the attitude of "I'm a good christian, so these freaks who are godless degenerates are probably doing even worse"

There's this weird thing called the "Reverse cargo cult."

The basic idea is that they can't imagine anyone else being different than them. All their accusations are projection, with the bonus of "At least I'm being honest about it, so I'm better than they are!"

"There are no air strips. There is no cargo. It's all lies, even mine, but at least I'm telling you I'm lying."

I truly believe I'd Christ is truly a eternal, begotten being, than most Christians would be the first in hell:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

I recently did a readalong of the NT with a YouTuber, and the amount of super chill stuff Jesus said and did (that is just transparently anti-prosperity-gospel and anti-bigotry) that gets sorta... post-hoc invalidated by the Pauline epistles is kinda wild.

Don't @ me with the authorship dates, I both already know and do not care that much about the bible

Ah, good old Paul.

He was a great theologian but man was he a piece of shit in many respects.

u/KneesDown_TongueOut I Got Lost One Day 8h ago

I lowkey respect the juggling act he was doing turning an underground Jewish heresy into The First Church, but also highkey fuck that prick.

There's an essay I read from a professor who teaches the philosophy of religion, I believe he's a progressive Methodist, but it really stuck with me when I see stuff like this:

If I were the Devil … I mean, if I were the Prince of Darkness, I’d take the greatest pride in corrupting the people who thought themselves most religious.

I’d convince them to be biblical inerrantists, so they felt obligated to defend the slavery and genocide in the Bible and call them God’s work.

I’d convince them that their interpretations of scripture were the “plain meaning of the text” so they would confuse their own biases with divine revelation.

Knowing the danger to my plans posed by Deborahs, Ruths, Aquilas, and Junias I’d tell them not to allow women in leadership.

I’d inoculate them against learning by making them think that education erodes true faith. I’d make them to accept ignorance and lack of education as a sign of virtue.

I’d lead them to confuse the grace of God with their own righteousness, so that instead of making them self-critical, their religion would make them feel like they were better than everyone else.

I’d teach them to spread religion by fear, threatening everyone else with hell if they didn’t join in the churches I controlled.

I’d have them confuse love and hate so that they turned the gospel into judgment of minority and oppressed populations.

I’d whisper in their ear that equality was oppression so that they would lament, complain, and protest each time they were prevented from lording over others.

I’d have them perceive legitimate criticism of their injustice as persecution so that when their hatred was called out, it would only reinforce their self-righteousness.

I’d lead them to think religion was about individual relationships with God which didn’t require changing society to make it better. I’d convince them that “social Justice” was evil, perhaps Marxist!

I’d get them to forsake the peacableness of their savior and make them the greatest advocates for access to guns and fans of crusade.

I’d make them exclusivists so that they were blind to the activity of God beyond their own community and unable to work with members of other religions for the common good.

I’d take their gold to make molten calves, confusing worship of God with worship of their nation, placing the country’s flag at the front of their churches, blinding them to the sins of their founding fathers.

I’d make them especially judgmental of gays, lesbians, transgender people, and drag queens, while giving them leaders who fornicate, sexually assault, and excuse it all as boys being boys.

And I give them power. First the radio waves, then television channels, and mega churches.

Their leaders would be perpetually involved in scandal, but I would loosen their hearts to appeals for cheap grace so that no one was held accountable.

And I would have them all think of this as the most pious, the most rigid form of Christianity, so that their idolatry would appear to them as worship of God.

Of course, on the other hand, if I were the angel of darkness, I wouldn’t have to do any of this. Because so many are willing to do it on their own.

People dont seem to realize that you dont need to force people to do bad things. Most of the time they just need a way out, an exception from consequences either real or fake.

Like “its okay to do that bad thing, you can just pray later and god will forgive you for it”.

I will say, for all of their faults, their many many faults, one thing that I think was beneficial prior to the protestant reformation was the Catholic doctrine of need faith and works to be saved. Like these days when you go to confession, your penance is like say 3 hail Mary's, but in the middle ages?

Penance was fucking insane, people would do shit like they'd whip themselves so they could remind themselves of the suffering their God faced. Hell, some sins people use to do years of fasting.

My favourite I've read about is some really devout people, for their subs they used to go on long pilgrimages wearing heavy iron chains.

u/Fish_Are_Stupid Bah-weep-Graaaaagnah wheep ni ni bong 7h ago

That was only for the poor and disenfranchised though. If you were rich or influential enough it didnt matter. You could literally donate to the church to become a cardinal. Its the same as today in some aspects.

To be fair, most people back then thought those people were basically doing a weird BDSM thing.

I don't need to sin to convince myself to commit to the weird BDSM thing.

But I will certainly sin while committed to the weird BDSM thing.

This is in my town and while he did get charged he honestly got a really light sentencing for what he did. It happened a while ago, and the church of course did everything they could to cover it up.
