Unfortunately the article is behind a paywall so we never get to the bit of him sounding an ominous note.

Watching artists go from curious to horrified in real time is something else. The tech moved so fast nobody had time to figure out what we were actually building before it was already everywhere

McKean at least put in the work to understand it before coming to his conclusions. Most people just picked a side and dug in
