News WEBTOON and Marvel Announce New Marvel Comics App at New York Comic Con
https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/new-marvel-comics-app-webtoon-new-york-comic-con-202625
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 19h ago
So it looks like they finally have a DC Infinite top tier comparison for a slightly cheaper price. Not too surprising they made the jump to just a 30 day wait. I wonder if the app/website will be any better.
16
u/cyclopswashalfright 19h ago
The option for 1 month readership of new titles is appealing, but for me, the biggest thing will be an improved user interface. Unlimited felt clunky to use.
3
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 18h ago
It's pretty nice for DC so I might end up doing it for Marvel too. The option for DC was 1 month or 6 months right now I'm fine with 3 months for Marvel.
I haven't had too many issues with the APP but it can be aggravating searching for series. For some reason in the past month or two Uncanny X-Men switch to X-Men and I couldn't find it in the app until I did some real digging
10
u/randgan 18h ago
I'm not holding my breath, but its shocking how awful the website is. As a paying subscriber, I have to go to pirate sites to read comics on my more convenient, much larger computer screen.
2
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 18h ago
I have a Surface Pro so I don't have a terrible time with the website fortunately for me. I do remember when I used a laptop and it was difficult to read off that.
3
u/randgan 17h ago
Its not reading on the website. That part's actually fine. Its navigating to the comics itself. From everything I could find, this isn't just user error, the site is built to almost force using the app. The marvel.com/unlimited page only routed to a sign up page, and there was no way to access the features of the app. And there were ways of navigating to comics to read, but it was like accessing an accidental feature.
2
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 17h ago
Yeah you can't go through Marvel.com/unlimited but to marvel.com itself. Under the comics tab at the top there is a release calendar and even a list of all the comic series available. I found that better to navigate than searching on the app. Overall not a good experience for people dipping into comics but that never really bothered me which is probably just a me thing.
4
u/JackFisherBooks 18h ago
I hope it's better. The app is not nearly as user friendly as Comixology was when it was the main source for digital comics. But that doesn't mean Webtoon is going to be much better. Probably best to take a wait-and-see approach.
2
u/moonarc123 17h ago
That’s nice! Finally a 30 day wait instead of 3 months!
Any idea if collected editions will be available, like DC has majority of their TPs and some HC, including deluxes?
1
u/antsinmyeyesmauger Nightcrawler 17h ago
It doesn't say. I assume they won't since they haven't before but I assume it's a wait and see thing
1
u/moonarc123 16h ago
Oh man I hope they do, it’s a lot harder to read back issues in singles, collected editions make it easier to track reading order. Let’s see, hopefully over time they’ll start adding them in, they sell them on Comixology anyway so they should have the files readily available.
Thanks for the info tho!
2
u/ragecage44 16h ago
The thing is they easily could. When they made the switch from comixology to their app with the redemption codes any collected edition you redeemed on comixology showed up in your library on Marvel U. All the Bendis All New/Uncanny collected editions are in mine. Plus all new collections are digitized already anyway.
If it's not there at launch I give it a year before they add them. Remember how bare the DC app was the first year with the curated books instead of just having everything?
1
u/moonarc123 15h ago
I didn’t know that, thanks! Yea hopefully within a year they’ll start including all the TPs at least
1
u/dagobahs 15h ago
Ditto on the website design, really hope they fix it up this time.
Marvel Unlimited's UI was apallingly bad, especially in comparison to DC Universe Infinite.
17
u/reinholdboomer 19h ago
If anyone else is curious what this means for their old redeemed codes/comixology purchases.
Will I be able to access my digital comic collection and reading history via the Marvel Comics app?
Yes! Your existing Marvel Unlimited library, reading progress, redeemed comics and saved issues can all be transferred over to the Marvel Comics app. To ensure your digital comic collection is accessible via the Marvel Comics app, you will need to create an account with WEBTOON. Please import your Marvel Unlimited library with the Marvel Comics app prior to 12/7/2026 to be able to validate it migrated successfully from the Marvel Unlimited app.

I’ve had less bugs with Marvel Unlimited than DC Infinite but if WebToons provides a better cataloging experience, I’m game. Both Marvel and DC make it hard to look up a particular run. Like “Title Year” mostly works but its a bit hit or miss
Not sure what this means for Marvel’s long term plans, but I also like that they are reducing the window from 3 months to 1 month. I know DC does that on their higher tiers… which means a price increase is inbound
Edit: Slightly cheaper than DC Infinite’s higher tier. I’ll take it
12
u/flowerstage 18h ago
The one thing I hope to come from this new app is to finally have the 15+ comics like MAX and Red Band on there. That was the one thing I always felt was missing from Marvel Unlimited.
8
u/gibbsy34 Scarlet Witch 18h ago
I doubt that happens tbh. The reason they aren’t available in unlimited is because it would change the age rating on the app store, a new app will still have that problem.
6
u/boxsterguy 18h ago
Parental controls are a thing. They implemented them on D+ to be able to bring on Deadpool. There's absolutely no reason they couldn't do it for MU or whatever the replacement is called.

7
u/stevebr0 16h ago
Punisher MAX is in one of the screenshots for the new service, so it’s looking possible
21
u/Forever-Fades_Away 19h ago
I mean, it HAS to be an improvement over what we have now, right?
10
u/rockytheboulder 18h ago
I loved the old Comixology app. Marvel unlimited was a downgrade in almost every way. I welcome a change, i just hope its for the better this time
2
u/Forever-Fades_Away 18h ago
Comixology was just a little before my time, I just got back into comics late last year. Ive heard nothing but good things about it. Didn't you have to buy each book? It wasn't really a subscription service, was it?
5
u/rockytheboulder 18h ago
Yes. Though comics were regularly on sale, and much cheaper than physical copies. The search and browse features were intuitive and the library was extensive.
There was even a time where marvel gave you a free digital code in every physical issue. So you got it free whenever you bought a floppy. That was a golden age for me
3
u/buffysbangs 16h ago
There was a time? They still do that.
2
u/rockytheboulder 15h ago
Im glad to hear that. They had oscillated on that. Sometimes theyd give you a copy of the issue you'd bought. Sometimes it was just another comic they were promoting at the time.
When they switched to unlimited, they weren't doing either for a while. So i hadn't kept up on that status

13
u/JackFisherBooks 18h ago
It doesn't HAVE to be. With big companies, they don't really care about improvement. They care about their shareholders. If they can make the app worse, but in a way that pleases shareholders...rest assured, they'll go with the shareholders. We mean nothing to them.
2
u/Forever-Fades_Away 18h ago
You got me there... but I feel Marvel's already run us through that course. I know nothing about Webtoon, but this kind of project seems to fit squarely in their wheelhouse.
1
u/JackFisherBooks 17h ago
Yes, their choice in partnership is encouraging. Webtoon is much more experienced and capable when it comes to apps and web-based interface. They can certainly develop a quality product. But will they? That depends on a number of factors we can't control. But even a minor improvement would still be a win here. The bar is not set very high.

1
u/Quirky_Ad_5420 18h ago
We can only hope. It’s a distant hope but hope nevertheless. Accessibility would be more with webtoon that part is a guarantee
8
u/mythours1 18h ago
I wonder what does that mean for international readers. Marvel Unlimited was available worldwide compared to DCUI which is available only on handful of countries.
Unlimited also had local pricing through in-app purchases. I wonder how this new app handle all that, or if at all.
1
u/This_Appointment_349 17h ago
The Webtoon app at least is available in 150 countries. Someone will probably ask at the book this week for the Marvel app.

u/cyclopswashalfright 19h ago
New Marvel Comics app, developed by WEBTOONS, is going to drop on November 16th.
The Marvel Comics app will offer two subscription tiers. The Base tier is $9.99/month (plus tax) or $69.99/year (plus tax) and provides access to the full Marvel Comics digital library, with the latest issues available as soon as 3 months after their print release. For fans who want the latest issues sooner, the Ultimate tier gives access to new comics as soon as 30 days after their print release in addition to the full library. Ultimate will be available for $12.49/month (plus tax) or $99.99/year (plus tax).
4
u/cyclopswashalfright 19h ago
Developed from the ground up by WEBTOON Entertainment for mobile and web, the app is designed to make comic discovery faster, reading more flexible, and ongoing series easier to follow. The Marvel Comics app will include archived comics, current comic book runs, and will support both traditional page-based comics and vertical-scroll formats.

u/Darkgamer000 18h ago
End of an era. It’s been my default comic reading experience for so long that it sold me on Infinite to read DC. I have high expectations for this new app.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. I've been subscribed to Marvel Unlimited for a few years now. It's not perfect. It has flaws. It certainly doesn't measure up to the old Comixology app. But it gets the job done.
This new app could either fix those flaws or simply be another effort that results in further enshitification of digital comics. I want to hope for the best, but recent trends have led me to be extra cynical.

u/GryphonTak 18h ago
Developed from the ground up by WEBTOON Entertainment for mobile and web
I hope this means it'll have a functional website version, which is something Marvel Unlimited sorely lacked.

u/r0botosaurus Nico Minoru 18h ago
I feel like this is the fourth or fifth time I've had to use a new app to keep reading comics. Honestly I'm just tired of switching over to something new all the time. I'll probably just end my Marvel Unlimited subscription and start pirating or something.
2
u/Little_Tommy_Tuggins The Question 17h ago
Big same. I wish one company or app would survive to 10 years. I’m always afraid I’m getting had.
1
2
u/GreattFriend 16h ago
The inconvenience of having to redo your info once every what? couple years or so is enough to make you pirate? Lol you were probably bound to pirate anyways
2
u/r0botosaurus Nico Minoru 16h ago
For what it's worth, I already have been with older comics. I like to have a digital backup on my hard drive in case I lose access to Marvel Unlimited and the omnibi I own. This is all stuff that's like 30+ years old, I dropped current Marvel comics when they killed the Ultimate Universe. I still buy floppies for Image and other non big 2 comics.
And yes, it is an inconvenience to have to sign up for yet another service, download yet another app, hope my reading history transfers or spend time adding my reading list to my library, hope that this new app has everything I've been reading or plan to read in the future. It's an inconvenience that shouldn't exist, yet it's already happened multiple times and I'm just tired of it.

u/jawsthegreat777 Storm 18h ago
As a longtime Webtoon user I am not mad. Also I'm glad theyre finally adding an option where you can read books 30 days after they're released physically.
1
u/OrionLinksComic 17h ago
On the one hand, I'm glad there's an improvement, but I'm kind of afraid that, well, the transition won't be easy.
1
u/Nemo_Griff 17h ago
I am sure that this had been discussed before it became official. I seem to remember everyone complaining about it being a cheap doom scrolling format. This isn't appealing, but I am sure that it is cheaper to produce, so that is the real reason for this
The old Marvel app was great! I loved it before they moved everything to Unlimited. I also enjoyed being able to read my books directly from the website. I am older now and trying to read that long on my phone's screen puts a real strain on my eyes.
Can any webtoon users let us know if reading from a web browser is possible?
1
u/AporiaParadox 16h ago
As long as it's the same comics library for the same or at least similar price I don't really have a problem with this. I hope that the new App is better. The new tier where you get new comics earlier makes sense and I'm surprised it took them this long to implement.
2
u/Fickle-Aardvark6907 11h ago
Looks like its more expensive than current price but still cheaper than DCUI.
1
u/Low_Helicopter_2003 16h ago
Does anyone know the price of the new service or when it rolls out (if it hasn't already). I re-up'd my Marvel Subscription for the year a couple months so hopefully I can roll whatever money they give back into the new Webtoons one. I skipped every exclusice comic because comics should have pages. lol I kept scrolling down and down and if I had to come back to it it never saved the place.
1
u/cyclopswashalfright 16h ago
November 16th it rolls out, Unlimited ends on the 7th of December. You will be refunded for Unlimited.
1
1
u/BrokenWolf17 15h ago
The price will be $9.99 for a month $59.99 for the year And then there's an Ultimate Tier that cost more and that'll give you access to new comics 30 days after physical release.
1
u/Low_Helicopter_2003 15h ago
That's great. I expected it to be much more for some reason. I've been reading with the current delay and gotten used to it, but 30 days sounds good since I'm all caught up on my titles. Appreciate the information!
1
u/BrokenWolf17 15h ago
Typo on my end. The full year is 69.99 Ultimate Tier is $12.49 a month and $99.99 for the year and that's the tier that gives you new comics 30 days later rather than 6 months later.
1
u/Low_Helicopter_2003 14h ago
OK, thank you. I thought if we had Marvel already we will be offered the first year with the 30 day releases at 69.99 with that founders discount code?
1
u/BrokenWolf17 14h ago
I don't think you have to be a current subscriber I think that's just the special they're offering in general. But I could be wrong. Either way if you're a current subscriber than you're good 🙌🏽

What the hell is WEBTOON? Sounds like mobile junk.

u/inadequatecircle Heath Huston 15h ago
Digital comic app that started in Korea. It's actually fucking crazy how fast it blew up, and it seems to only be getting bigger.

1
u/Galrafloof 16h ago
So Unlimited exclusive comics should be available on the new app, right? I would be a tragedy to lose all those Jeff comics.
1
u/scottishdrunkard Moon Knight 1h ago
Oh cock, I literally just had a conversation about why I favoured services like MU over Webtoons. I just don’t like the cutting up and scrollifying of comics not build for it.
Plus Marvel Unlimited had all those heavily curated reading order options didn’t it?
1
u/buffysbangs 15h ago
Bold to start a new subscription service when their new offerings are falling in popularity
For me this is a jumping off point

u/Reznor_PT 17h ago
Ultimate tier gives access to new comics as soon as 30 days
That's 30 days too late, still think both DC and Marvel would actually gain on digital purchases if was same-day release.
5
u/cyclopswashalfright 17h ago
They already sell comics digitally on day of release. Putting it on an app right away would do nothing to help them.

This is actually a pretty wild crossover. Curious how Marvel handles the Webtoon format.
1
u/GreattFriend 16h ago
Its a ground up app by the webtoon company. Not the webtoon app format. So I think it'll be pretty good. Not that I have any opinion on webtoon ive never used it. I read mainstream shonen jump manga

So is this replacing Marvel Unlimited? Thats what it sounds like. Finally though a Marvel option for 30 days from release books digitally, bringing it inline with DC.
Edit: Yes, yes it is. https://www.marvel.com/unlimited-sunset
