Questions Chihuahua potty training help
So I’ve just gotten my puppy who is male and just 13 weeks, he’s so amazing and I love him to bits already!
But I can’t seem to get him to pee on the puppy pads and I don’t know what to do, I have carpet in my room which doesn’t help but I which he would just wee on them instead of everything else
I did want to try and get him to pee outside but I’ve heard mixed reviews on toilet training outside because of the cold, and also I’m a little worried as I live with my family and they have cats that mostly like to chill outside
I will appreciate any advice, I’m unsure of what to do

My girl is now almost 7. I remember getting her in January in Colorado. I just did the normal things: take her out once an hour, stay with her and keep an eye on her, take any accidents out with us so she knew where they were supposed to go, give frowny faces and disappointed tone when I found an accident, give treats and over-the-top praise anytime she went potty outside. She was my first Chihuahua, and probably the hardest to housetrain. It took about a month and a half to get her to start asking to go outside.
(Taking her out in the snow when she was so tiny ended up being a good thing. She never minded the cold, and even played in the snow. We are in the south now, and it’s the rain she takes issue with.)
Good luck. Don’t give up. You just have to be more stubborn than your dog.

Just be consistent. Keep putting him on the oad tell him to go pee pee over and over again..use a leash while doing so to keep him there ..also give him a target males love to pee on something put another pee pad like a teepee in the middle so he can lift his leg on it ..then when he pees on the pad get really excited telling him he's a good boy and reward with a treat

Take your dog outside to pee and poop. He will be fine in the cold, he can also wear a sweater if need he. When he’s peeing or pooping use the word potty to associate the two (I used “go potty”) and reward every time (doesn’t have to be food but something very high value to start and food is usually that). Take him out frequently - every 30 minutes if you have to. You’ll start to recognize his schedule and as he gets older you can lengthen the tine between potty breaks.
Please take your little dog out and train him just like any other dog.

For us the pee pads work… it does involve some effort on your part. All dogs squat to pee, they hunch to poo. Keep the pee pad by the door. As you see him starting to squat, put him on the pad. He will learn, the pad smells like pee. Once he learns that and may take 6-8 deputations. Start moving the pad out the door, giving him less room each time. Little by little. He will learn and understand. We also use a treat for the first time. We use 1/3 salt beef broth frozen with a small piece of pupperoni inside. They luv it. So he learns that if he pees on the pad he gets a treat outside. Maybe not the best but it works for us. There are also belly belts if all else fails. They hate those but as soon as he marks or squats in the belly pad move him outside. After 20 some years it has been our go to with new pups… 😊 also give him the command when he starts to go. We tell gopee. One word, that way when traveling when we stop we tell him gopee, they’ll run and pee and are ready to get back in his travel crate. One other thing we’ve found extremely useful - a command get in your house. Each pair have their own crate. As they come in from outside we simply say get in your house. It’s funny to watch, they come inside and run into their crate. It’s where they get fed so are eager to go into the house. Very beneficial if taking them to the vet. Getting ready to go, get in your house, they run inside, close the door and off to the vet. Again for us that works maybe not for everyone, we have a busy lifestyle and don’t have time to chase them around

Look up Sophia Yin on YouTube. That’s the technique university vet behaviorists use - she revolutionized animal training. (She has books and DVDs)
House training is super easy with her method but it requires vigilance. I’ve rescued so many dogs and house trained them that way!

The next time he pees take the wee wee pad and dab the pee onto it. Now set it down for the next time he has to go. I know that isn’t help for the long run, but for now this may help.

Take your puppy out as much as you can so he can learn to go outside when he wake up after playing after eating
