Long coat or short coat? 4-week-old puppies

Hi everyone!

These little ones are 4 weeks old today, and I'm super curious about whether they will grow up to have long or short coats.

I’ve read online that you can sometimes tell by looking at the fuzz length (the little ones are currently around 8mm) or by checking behind the ears and the back of the paws/legs for early feathering. is there any way to tell at this age? When do you usually know for sure if they are smooth coat or long coat?

both of my chihuahuas were half and half; not fully long hair but not smooth either. best of both worlds if you ask me hahah. they had longer hair like this around their ears too.

Yes I see, the mother has long hair but also short, long hair not very long, so I'm not sure

The mother doesn’t look like she has a very dense or long coat, so the puppies could be like her. Mine has a long coat but you couldn’t really tell until he was a bit older.

The mother didn't really have long hair or feathering, until she was about 4 months old

They look longhaired, but single coated to me, so thin fur on the body, but long on ears, back legs and tail. (That is also what the mom looks to be)

They are beautiful whatever their fur becomes (but they look like my short haired ones).

Hmm. I think they might be long coat. My boy is long haired and his fur looked very similar when he was a baby, especially the ears. It got longer and fluffier as he grew, and when I took him home at 12 weeks, he looked like a scraggly little puff ball!

Could be short hair, double coat. They look like both of mine did at thst age.

For the double coat, both parents have to be double coated, right? because none of the parents seem to be double coated, they have very fine hair

Honestly not sure. Our girls' parents were both long-haired and only one was double coat. Both our girls ended up short haired and double coat. Their brother was long-haired and double coat 🤣

I will always adopt. Not sure what country you’re in but U.S. rescues and shelters are full to the brim of Chis and Chi mixes. There’s a huge dog overpopulation problem here and many get euthanized in overcrowded shelters.

They look short coat but mine had a long coat mom and a short haired sire. Therefore he has to get groomed. But it’s worth it.
