Discussion Letting users remove posts.

Hello everyone,

As you are aware, on reddit moderators approve and remove content and subreddit subscribers can report to us.

Today we'd like to start an experiment here on r/Cats where we will give trusted subreddit participants access to a keyword that will allow them to remove posts.

When you exceed a certain level of subreddit specific comment karma and when you have a CQS score of highest you can now use the keyword "!remove" to pull a post from our feed. (Spelled exactly like that, case sensitive, top-level comment only as opposed to a reply to a comment.)

This will work for posts only, not for comments.

There are some things to keep in mind:

  • When you comment here on an account that exceeds the limit automod will assign you a special flair class and send you a message explaining you can now use the keyword.

  • Users will keep their existing flair text. However, changing your flair to a different pre-made flair option will also reset the flair class giving you access to this removal ability. Next comment you make it will be re-applied and you will be sent another message.

  • We are sent a modmail when a subscriber removes a post, explaining what post was removed and who used the keyword. Please do not abuse this ability. If posts are removed for bad reasons we will take away your ability to remove posts.

  • That means, use this keyword if you see spam or other rulebreaking posts only.

  • Please keep in mind that it is currently very popular to accuse posters of making an AI generated post. An accusation does not mean that what they are being accused of is true. Human beings can detect AI at 60% accuracy, just a little better than the results of flipping a coin. An AI can only accurately detect AI content if an AI watermark is attached to the image. It is best not to remove a post just because someone is accused of something. Use your own best judgement and our rules as your litmus, not what other people are saying.

  • Since this is a test run, when I ran a very minor proof of concept trial, a few people have already been assigned this special flair class who have not been sent a message. /u/kiaeej, /u/chux4w, /u/MilmoWK, /u/ms_rdr, /u/Electronic_Ad357, /u/WhiteMouse42097, /u/BeMoreKnope, /u/bluecedarood, /u/Robobanditos, congratulations, you can remove posts.

  • Should you for any reason not want to have this ability then you should send us a modmail after receiving the message from automod. That way we can exempt you in our code.

  • Initially we are going to monitor how this functions closely so we can see if we need to make changes to the threshold level for activation.

  • Nothing will change about the way we handle user-made reports on content. This is not a replacement for that, but an addition. If you see rulebreaking content of any kind, please report.

We hope that this change will be something that has a positive influence on the content on this subreddit.

Thank you for reading, and thank you all for making this subreddit a great place to be

Lord have mercy! Ms. Ivy is a whopping 18lbs! This lovely bowling ball of a lady was a medical surrender. Here’s to hoping we can shave some pounds off and get her to an adoptable weight!

We are located in Southern Ontario, Canada if anyone is looking to adopt a big girl with a lotta love to give 🖤

Mourning/Loss My sweet girl's last day

My family has to put our 18 year old cat Jasmine to sleep tomorrow. She was diagnosed with lymphoma last week and we were told that she only had a couple weeks left. We are all devastated and we've been trying to spend as much time with her and keep her as comfortable and happy as possible.

We've had her for 2/3 of my life. I grew up with her and I've been dreading this day for a while now. We all love her so much and this has been so hard on all of us. She's always been the sweetest baby and we couldn't have asked for a better cat. She's so special and such an important part of our family. I know we're doing what's best for her but I just can't imagine her not being a part of our lives anymore.

She followed me home when I was 9 years old. I was on a walk with my brother and grandma when I saw her and stopped to pet her. She followed me all the way home and kept hanging around day after day. Eventually we figured out that she belonged to some neighbors down the street. They told us that they were about to move and were planning to leave her behind so they said we could keep her and she's been in our family ever since. I still can't believe that someone could be so heartless as to abandon their pet but I'm so grateful that it meant that we got to keep the best cat in the entire world.

Nothing could prepare me for tomorrow. I'm beyond heartbroken that this day has finally come after so many years. But I wanted to share her pictures and story because she is so loved and she loves us so much. She has had a good long life and she's brought us so much joy and that brings me a little comfort in all of this. I'm glad she'll be at peace but I'm going to miss her so much.

Edit to add: I want to say thank you to everyone that's commenting and sending so much love and support. It means so much to me and I really appreciate the time that you're all taking to offer kind words. I'd respond individually but it's a little too hard right now but I'm reading every comment.

I wanted to add that I will be there at the appointment with her tomorrow along with my parents. I took the day off from work to be there, I wouldn't miss it for anything. She's been getting all the love and treats this weekend and I'm so glad I got to spend this extra time with her.

My wee Slug was semi famous for a short period on Reddit and Instagram on an old account of mine... Close to 100k likes!!!!. I had countless people asking for updates, for me to create a public account for her travels because I was taking her all over Ireland with me and just strangers wanting to be kept in the loop as she grew up.

A bad breakup later where I left everything other than her, lots of travelling and Slug turning into a prolific food thief... My best bud is all grown up!

Mourning/Loss In Memoriam: Charlie, 2008-2026

Charles
April 19, 2008-October 4, 2026

On June 11, 2008, I met Charlie for the first time. I knew the first time I saw him, he’d be my little buddy for the rest of his life. Today, 6,689 days and over 18 years later, Charles and I parted ways for the final time as he crossed the rainbow bridge. Along the way, he gave us more purrs, headbutts, and love bites than anyone deserves. He became my daughter’s little buddy and they’ve been inseparable since she could walk. He showed so much patience for her, letting her carry him around, pull his tail, and never once got tired of her. I’m so grateful for the many years I got with him and although I wish we could’ve had one more good day, we’re glad he’s at peace and not sick anymore. Rest in peace Charlie and thank you for everything, we will never forget you, your purrs, loud meows, and your kind demeanor.

Edit: Thank you for my first ever Reddit award. A fitting tribute to my best buddy.

It doesn't feel real, my cat of 7years passed away while I was sleeping, the vets believe it was heart failure, last night he was staring at me and my wife and purring so contently and now hes no longer here.

The grief is unbearable and I can't help but feel its my fault somehow

Advice I rescued a new cat, but he keeps spraying and peeing on things. I don't want to give up on him.

I'm really upset. About 4-ish weeks ago, we adopted a new cat, Oliver. We got him from a family member who had declawed him and generally hoarded animals.

Oliver was also once an indoor-outdoor cat. He would roam around outside and come back when he was done, but his old owners (my aunt and grandma) lived in the butt fuck of nowhere, whereas my parents and I live in a busy neighborhood.

He keeps on peeing, and today we found signs of spraying. We keep his litter box clean, he uses it like a normal cat, but he just also pees on stuff. My mom wants to put him outside and make him an outdoor cat, but I feel like that's cruel. He can't defend himself, and he's completely unfamiliar with the terrain of our neighborhood. I don't want him to get hurt, or run over, or get lost. I don't think I could handle the worry of wondering if he will come back. He is such a sweet cat.

I try to take him outdoors on a leash, and he enjoys it, but I don't think it's enough for him. I'm stressed that no one will want a middle-aged cat with borderline (non-aggressive) territorial issues, but I don't want to put him in a shelter.

I've grown really fond of him, and I don't want to lose him.

We've already taken him to the vet, and he is healthy.

EDIT: he is neutered, and he uses the litter box like normal (except for the times he doesn't)

Mourning/Loss Hi I'm Timmy and I want to tell you a bit about myself.

Post image
6.3k Upvotes

I was born in April, 3 years ago. Unfortunately, I don't remember much about my early life, but I grew up on a farm with other animals.

My balance was always a bit off. I wasn't able to balance myself very well, especially when running. Being very sensitive to stress, I didn't particularly like it there. This, along with my general scepticism and aggression towards humans, made my old owners decide to give me to a shelter.

A vet examined my blood and everything else and determined that my unsteadiness came from an issue with my hip, but noted that there might be an underlying neurological issue.

I spent the next year of my life there, surrounded by other cats in small rooms, which I didn't particularly like. I started to become unclean, peeing wherever I saw fit to mark my territory.

People came and looked at every cat. One after another, they were adopted and found new families... but not me. After all, who wants a cat with underlying issues like mine?

But then they came. A young couple came to the shelter specifically to see me. They spent time with me and gave me some treats. This was my first encounter with my soon-to-be owners. I was still very sceptical about them, hissing and keeping my distance.

Not long after, I was in a box in a car, driving through the countryside. And then, I saw my new home!

I enjoyed this apartment very much. It was a lot friendlier than the cold shelter I had come from. Here, I also met my new sisters for the first time: two female cats, 8 and 3 years old. Socialising was never my strong suit, so we fought from time to time, chasing each other around and making Mum and Dad separate us eventually.

We made slow progress with our introductions from time to time, but I would much rather have been left alone.

Mum and Dad spent a lot of time with me, cleaning up after me and feeding me. Slowly, I started to trust them, lie closer to them, and seek their attention. But still, if it all became too much for me, I resorted to scratching and hissing.

I was making progress. I became cleaner again and more open to being approached... but unfortunately, this wasn't meant to last.

About a month ago, I started becoming unsteady, regularly falling over even when simply standing or walking slowly. I don't know exactly what happened. I just didn't have control over my body the way I used to anymore. My underlying hip problem wasn't responsible for this.

Over the following weeks, I went to multiple vets, trying to figure out what was going on. No results came back that explained my condition. And so, my situation worsened. I was barely moving anymore. Not even food could convince me to stand up, so I just dragged myself to the food bowl.

My fur started sticking together because I could no longer groom myself properly.

Two weeks ago, I had to be put under anaesthesia so that the vets could scan my brain.

The results: inflammation of my brain tissue. But further examination of my brain fluid revealed no specific infection.

So, I started receiving medication every evening, along with some tasty treats.

I started to feel better and more confident. Still very wobbly on my legs, I tried moving around more, even though I kept falling over.

My hopes were short-lived, though. Not even three days after starting my medication, I began to feel worse again, even worse than before.

I stopped dragging myself to the food bowl. Whenever I peed, I tried to drag myself away from it, with varying degrees of success. Most of the time, though, I just stayed where I was.

I can see the worried glances Mum and Dad give me when they look at me. I can feel my body getting weaker by the second.

This morning, I woke up and found myself having difficulty breathing.

Mum and Dad came to me and petted me, talking to me and telling me that tomorrow, I'll be in a better place.

I hope they're right, wherever that better place may be...

I think I'm ready.

Our 7 year old baby Loki had a sudden onset saddle thrombosis. 😢 he was in so much pain and had to be put to sleep. He was my wife and I’s first cat and was always so full of love and ready to cuddle. He loved to go on walks when it wasn’t too hot or loved going on vacation and hiking. He had a grumpy face but he loved to cuddle with his younger brother and sister. They were looking around for him when we got home. He was the bestest boy.

His shelter picture made him look like an all white cat but look at him! He's 1 yr old and doesn't have a name yet. I love his lil bubblegum pink nose and ears omg. And he's soooooo lovey and sweet.

I can't wait to get through our quarantine and intro time to my other lil boy kitten so they can be friends.

What would you call this coat pattern?
