Discussion Been thinking of building a PC for a while but I'm not sure if it's right time

• Upvotes

Alright so here is the thing, I've been thinking of making the switch to consoles from PC for a while, 80% of my gaming catalog comes from buying used game, with that dying soon, I honestly can't justify staying on console. And PS5 will likely be the last console I own UNLESS they decide to make the juicy exclusives PS only again.

However in the next 9 months or so I'll be quite busy with both work and online studies, leaving me little time to enjoy the pc or even my console.

But the thing is I'm kinda worried that if I decide to build it in 9 months or so the build go from 1600/1700 to 2000+ (9070 XT , 9700X / 32gb DDR5) the entire build was around 1670€ with some parts on sale back in August.

So yeah I either buy now because of Fomo but might not have the time to fully enjoy it right away

or wait until I have the time but by then it might cost 2000+

Anyone was in that situation at some point? what did you do?

Build Help Should I go 7700X3D or 7800X3D?

• Upvotes

I'm currently attempting to build my first PC, I have most parts like a case and have slowly gotten things piece by piece. I'm holding out on a GPU for now as I'm trying to just replace an old 2017 1.2 ghz 4 core 4 thread lenovo yoga 2-in-1 laptop for now that's been my main system and is ready to call it quits by becoming a safety hazard (I had turned it into a media system). I was practically planning around a well rounded versatile system that could handle most whatever I can throw at it from gaming to editing (with realistic expectations and compromises), granted it doesn't have to be the fastest which is why I went with these options for a CPU.

Already owned previously

Monitors: BenQ Mobius 1440p 27" 120fps and a UPERFECT 1440p 120hz 16" 16:10 ratio (offset vertical mounted)

Peripherals: weikav luck65 v2 with gateron milky yellow v3 linear switches and coiled aviator cable, modded keychron K6 with baby kangaroo 2.0 tactile switches. Logitech G502 hero.

Speakers: Edifier MR4.5 and M60 speakers (separate use cases as one is a media speaker and the other is a bookshelf style monitoring speaker)

Case: Darkflash C275P

PSU: Darkflash PMT850

Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus PRO B850i (the case is an M-atx that's built around the use of an ITX board)

AIO: TRYX panorama 240A SE (bought this new on jawa for really cheap as the seller bought two but decided to build a black PC and sold the white one at a loss. It was legit factory sealed)

Storage: Silicone power 500gb gen 3 M.2 Pcie SSD

RAM: Corsair vengeance RGB 16gb (2x8gb) DDR5 6000mhz CL36

Fans: Asiahorse Nyota ultra - forward and reverse

Accessories: Asiahorse extension cables, asiahorse umbra fan hub, thermal grizzly duronaught thermal paste and AM5 CPU contact plate, TRYX USB 2.0 internal header extender and a USB 3.2 gen 2 to gen 1 front header adapter (case has USB A only in the front)

The only parts left are a CPU and a GPU, but like I said, I'm just looking for this to replace the laptop for now, my budget can hold out on a GPU for a few months as I have plenty of low end emulated games and older games in my library to tie me off in the meantime. I'm limiting my budget for the CPU to about $350 as I see the 7800x3D often can hit as low as the MSRP of the 7700X3D on a good sale.

Discussion Used laptop or cheap mini PC

• Upvotes

I’m wondering what gets you the most power for your buck. A used laptop or a mini pc with a portable screen?

Not looking to be played crazy games on it, basically just generic games, but be able to editing run programs even if it’s somewhat slow.

The fact that I’ll likely have to be plugged in all the time doesn’t matter as long as it’s super easy to pick up and move elsewhere.

Troubleshooting RMA Issues with PB Tech Australia

• Upvotes

Seeing if anyone has any ideas for an RMA Issue with PBtech. I bought a MPG 322urx OLED Monitor off their Australian website. Two weeks later doesn't power up and makes a clicking noise. Try different power, DP and HDMI Cables on difference PC's and a laptop. Nothing.

RMA it back to PB tech. Weeks of international post, receipt, sending away to for tech assessment later I get an email saying, tested it, all fine, sending it back to you.

I have no idea how they even got it to turn on, let alone test it and clear it as fine....

Latest is I've emailed to say I won't accept it's return as the damn thing doesn't work. Any ideas for next steps?

Troubleshooting Black Screen and no signal when I game

Just got a new game for my pc, Star Wars Zero Company. I'm running with a Ryzen 7 3800X and a RTX Geforce 3070 ti.

The game mostly runs good, but in certain, cinematic heavy areas and the hub, I hear the fans getting loud and eventually the whole things hits a black screen and reads as no signal on my monitor.

I've cleared most of the Dust from the fans and tried to pull it out more. It utilizes a Liquid cooler and the only game to cause this same thing is Quarantine Zone.

Would love to get help with this.

Build Upgrade Ryzen 5060ti vs Ryzen 5070

Hello. I was was planning to buy a GPU for my PC. Currently I am running the ff set up.

  1. Ryzen 7 5700g

  2. Prime B550M-K ARGB

  3. 16gb ddr4 lexar thor

  4. 500W Silverstone

I am budget constrained so I was debating whether to get an RTX 5060ti or a 5070. I was told that I will need a new PSU if I get the 5070 but that's well within my budget.

So which is better for my set up? 5060ti or 5070?

Thanks!

Discussion What are some interesting/ cool mid tower cases to look into? I may have to switch to an ATX build.

Hey everyone,

I recently moved from mATX to mini ITX because there were no mATX options that had a USB 4 Type C option in the motherboard I/O.

There was an ASUS ROG STRIX motherboard that did have an option for two USB 4 Type C and I went with it. It was a bit pricy, but I tend to prefer small builds, so I was okay with it (also, motherboards aren't really something I often buy either).

However, the board appears to be defective, and there are no other options for me at Microcenter. This was the last motherboard they had that's mini ITX so if I return it I won't have an option but to grab an ATX motherboard.

It might honestly make my life easier overall if I just went back to ATX so I'll be shopping around for some motherboards that have the USB 4 connector but since it's been years since I've had a full PC build that wasn't all tiny and compact I wanted to ask what cases are currently some cool ones to look into. I'm not into RGB and I'm not too into tempered glass anymore, I prefer all mesh for more airflow

Build Help Overheating CPU, New Case & Cooler, maybe new Platform?

NOTE: My current hardware is at the very bottom of the post!

1. My Current Problem:

My computer is crashing a lot. I got an iBuyPower PC as a gift from my parents in 2021, which was a huge step up from my laptop. Fast forward to now, I've replaced the original storage, GPU, and PSU with upgraded components (around December 2023), and it has been exhibiting vague crashes in games and BSODs (access violations, crashes related to the gpu / nvidia, etc.).

I've done a lot of testing to try and fix this. First, I reinstalled the games, verified files, then ran MemTest86 with and without XMP enabled (both tests passed successfully), and finally reinstalled my OS on a new SSD. Nothing seemed to fix the issue.

It was only during MemTest86 that I noted that my CPU runs VERY hot now, as opposed to when I first got the system. It was maxing out at 100℃ during MemTest86, and also on some benchmark tests where I was stress testing the CPU / GPU (using OCCT).

I'm not certain about the CPU's cooling condition being the cause of it crashing in various games, but I definitely know that hitting 100℃ is not ideal in any scenario. My GPU may be at fault as I've received some crashes that tie to it, but I haven't done any testing with it yet. At this point, I don't use my desktop at all due to not wanting to damage the CPU by going past its acceptable limit.

2. What I'm Looking For:

I'm leaning further and further into building a new computer due to the age of my platform, but prices now are very scary for that.

At minimum, I want to get a new Case and CPU Cooler that I could maybe retrofit on my current CPU to see if stabilizing the temperatures fixes any of the issues, or if another of my components is to blame for the issues since I don't have another computer for testing my hardware.

Pushing it to the maximum, though, if my current setup is really that old and this seems like more of a headache than anything, I've been thinking of upgrading my current platform and preserving my GPU, PSU, and SSD for a new build. It would still require a new cooler and case regardless, though.

I would also be interested in swapping from Intel to AMD for the CPU; I don't really know if there are any substantial positives or negatives to using either side. I'm just looking to get the best value for my money.

3. The Specifics:

I live in the United States, and for a budget, I'll break it down into two categories:

  1. If I am just buying a new Cooler and Case, combined, I would like to keep it around $250-$300.
  2. If I am going for a whole new platform, cooler, and case, then I would have to think more about my budget. I think given the fact that I am trying to reuse my GPU, PSU, and SSD, my maximum is $1,500. I'm also unsure about whether or not I should wait until November for Black Friday / Cyber Monday or if there's never a "good" time to buy components.

The type of cases I'm looking for are just standard ATX kind of cases. I think building in small cases is cool, but given I have no experience building my own computer, I'm looking to keep it straightforward.

For cooling, I'm leaning more towards Air Cooling since AIOs are pretty expensive and seem to have a lot more points of failure compared to conventional fans, but I am open to hearing what options there are for that.

I'm not a AAA games kind of person really; I want to work on expanding my game library, but I don't play a lot of the heavy hitters that you would expect most people to play. The main games that I want to be able to play are Dead by Daylight, SCP: Secret Laboratory, RE8 and RE9, etc.

I also have a 165hz 1440p monitor with G-SYNC as my main monitor. I would like to be able to run games at 1440p around 120 FPS on above-average in-game settings.

I'm also not jumping the ship to Linux yet (as much as I probably should) and will be sticking with Windows 10 / 11 since I'm familiar with it and am also keeping my NVIDIA GPU.

Here are the specs of my current computer:

  • MoBo: B560 DS3H AC-Y1
  • CPU: Intel i7-11700F
    • Uses a Deepcool fan of some variety; not an AIO
  • GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Super
    • I checked, and the GPU in particular is under warranty on Gigabyte's lookup page until October 2027
    • I also own an MSI RTX 2060 that I can use for testing if needed
  • RAM: 16gb DDR4 @ 3200 MHz
  • PSU: Cooler Master MWE GOLD 850w V3
  • Storage: Samsung 990 Pro (2TB), also a 3.5-inch HDD, but I would be willing to lose the hard drive if a case doesn't have room for one.

4. Ending

I apologize if there's anything I didn't cover adequately or if this post isn't suited for this subreddit in particular (I don't usually use Reddit). Any insight would be greatly appreciated since getting into hardware is very daunting.

Discussion I regret one thing on my build

Here is my build

X870E Aorus Elite X3D

R7 7800X3D

3090 Zotac Trinity non OC

Corsair LPX Vengeance (16GB x 2) 32GB 5600MT CL36

1TB Samsung 990 Pro

2TB Samsung 990 Pro

2TB SK Hynix P41 Platinum

Hyte Y70 Firefly Edition

Corsair Nautilus 360 RS LCD AIO

Deepcool PX1000G 1000W 80+ Gold

I feel like I made a mistake almost 2 years ago when I built this PC, and did a couple of upgrades along the way, namely the case and motherboard

As I was not as informed as I am now today, I regret that I did not do enough research on RAM back then. I purchased 2 sticks of 5600MT CL36 Ram without knowing that 6000MT CL30 is the gold standard, thinking I was getting something high end.

The worst part of this is, the timing is impeccable and RAM has ballooned up in price and it's completely unrealistic for me to "fix" this pain point at today's market price.

It feels like I am satisfied with everything in my build except the memory.

Am I just overthinking and overreacting by something that in reality doesn't matter that much? Some people say it makes a huge difference, some say no. What do you all think?

Build Help What's the best PC I can get for £900-950? UK, 1440p gaming + remote work, targeting Black Friday. I don't really know what I'm doing, so all suggestions welcome

About me:
I'm new to PC building and honestly don't really know what I'm doing, so I'd really appreciate honest feedback. I'm in the UK and I'm targeting Black Friday (27 Nov) to buy.
What I need it for:
Remote work every day
Gaming at 1440p/60fps, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and FIFA / EA FC, and I want it able to run something as demanding as GTA 6 when it comes to PC (I'll play it on Xbox first)
Upgradable later, so I'm not cutting corners on the parts that are hard to change
Budget: £900 ideally, £950 max. I want to get the most performance I can for that money. I already have a monitor and peripherals. No RGB needed.

My attempt: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/b7Zxxf
It's an RX 9060 XT 16GB, Ryzen 5 7600, 750W Gold PSU, 16GB DDR5 and a 1TB NVMe SSD. It comes to about £1,179 right now, mostly because 16GB of DDR5 is £254, so it's over budget. I'm hoping some prices drop on Black Friday.
My plan:
Don't cut corners on the CPU, GPU or PSU
Start with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, then add more later (hence the 4 RAM slots and spare M.2 slot)
Upgrade the GPU later if GTA 6 turns out heavier on PC
What I'd like help with:
•What's the best build you can put together for £900-950? If you have one that beats mine for the same money, please share it. I'm happy to scrap mine.
•Is it worth waiting for RAM prices to drop, or should I go DDR4/AM4 to save money?
•Is the 9060 XT 16GB the right GPU at this budget?
•Are there any corners you think I should cut instead? Some of the ones I've picked (like the cheap case, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD) might be the wrong ones, and I'd rather save money somewhere else if that's smarter.

•Anything I've missed or should swap?

Thanks so much for reading and in advance!!!

Peripherals APC Back-UPS 1500 is very hot. Why?

Google-fu says there's no ideal subreddit for consumer grade UPSs...

Anyway, my dad's 2 year old APC Back-UPS 1500 is very hot. There's only one mid-range desktop PC and an LCD monitor connected to it. Utility power is good. The PC has been idling for days, no load, monitor was off.

Why is the UPS hot to the touch? I assume that's not ideal for their power bill...?
