Help/Question How do I host a 50-100 minecraft server? (TOTAL BEGINNER and looking for resources)

Does anyone know any youtuve videos, wikis, or any source material I can study about hosting a minecraft server??

For context, I'm hosting a minecraft server for a college, and so far, we have 100 people who will be joining the launch day, but Im still unsure how much will be the average player count.

My only knowledge with minecraft server hosting is hosting a bedrock server for my highschool using a cloudflare domain.

So I need to know A LOT!
Like, what websites should I use for hosting?
What hardware requirements should I be looking for?

if its more plausible and worthwhile to host on my own hardware, what should I look out for? How do I keep it safe???

PLEASE HELP

Help/Question Would you say this punishment is too harsh?

I caught this kid X raying on our minecraft realm I play with my friends from school and apparently I punished him too harshly. I took away all of his items and gear (he x rayed for netherite and most likely diamond too) and I said he could only use iron gear for a week (no enchants).

And then him and his friend who also said he was X raying said I was ruining the fun of the server because I punished them for x raying? He also accused another kid in the server of x raying when me and my friend found his X ray strip mine in the nether, and we turned out to be right because we made him stream his computer and he had x ray.

edit: The reason this kid said he cheated was because I was the host of the server and he hates me so he said he wouldnt follow any rules. Really immature.

Help/Question What’s the deal with PumpkinMC (And all the other Rust-based softwares)?

I get that it’s way faster, but I find it hard to believe that it’s going to have full bukkit/paper/spigot plugin support. And when is it actually going to reach vanilla parity?

Oh, and most importantly, do you guys think it’s a truly viable paper/folia alternative?

Help/Question my server keeps growing and i dont know how i can keep the tps at a playable scale

i started a server about 2-3 months ago with a few friends thinking wed only get about 100 unique players max and never go above 20 ccu,

but our server has just continued growing at a rate none of us are expierenced enough to handle, were currently at about 40-50 ccu on normal hours but reach upwards of 70+ ccu in high hours(weve even gotten above 100 one time)

our server is just a regular semi-vanila survival smp with a few plugins mainly for moderation, were currently hosting the server on apexmc with their 16gb ex plan and we notice tps loss at 50+ players,

the tps loss at higher player counts can sometimes become almost unplayable (6-8 tps) and ive tried everything i can to keep it as high as possible without sacrificing gameplay,

(lowering render distance to 6, simulation distance to 4, mob cap optimizations, etc)

the server just keeps growing and im lost on exactly what to do to further help TPS, ive thought of switching to another provider that may give a better cpu or even going all the way to a private VPS/VDS but those options seemed expensive and although we have a decent player count we dont have a steady income for it as we currently only use donations for monitization.

i mainly make this post to ask for help from more experienced/seasoned server admins/owners that can help and give proper information on how to continue from this point,

appreciation in advance!

Help/Question i own a server with 200+ concurrent players and i need a proper anticheat

So basically I have tried a loooot of anticheats and I really haven't found any good one.

I have tried:

- Vulcan (good for 20€ but easily bypassable)

- GrimAc (literally makes the ping of all players high af and just crashes the server...)

- Polar (works quite well but is quite expensive)

Can anyone recommend any other anticheat? Like how come there isn't a a working decent anticheat that's not too expensive..

Help/Question Sunk a ton of time into developing our server, only 2 people joined

I'll keep it short and simple, we basically revamped our old server with new mechanics, newer update and a TON of fully custom plugins. We sank probably 2 whole weeks just in developing everything and getting it ironed out.

We went public with a "playtest" phase last night and got 2 people to join... That's all in the last 13 hours who have joined.

Feeling a little lost here because back when we launched our first server back in 2011 we had a ton of people flowing through within just the first 2 hours of posting on server lists. What's the secret here? What's changed?

Help/Question Is Wifi really bad for a server? Hosting for 15 people

Here's my situation:

  • I'm hosting for up to 15 people at once (Growing slowly)
  • Server is running on a repurposed gaming laptop from around 2018
  • 16gb ram, I unfortunately forgot the CPU
  • Running a few plugins on Paper server: GriefProtection, EssentialsX, Viaversion, GrimAC and paper anti x ray level 2

Will I see bottlenecks with my wifi? According to a simple internet speed test it has 0% packet loss, and speeds around 100 mbps. I also have zero DDOS protection.

Help/Question CAN'T STOP PLAYERS FROM USING MACROS AND AUTO AIM!

Hello
I have a 20-player Fabric Minecraft server. Recently a player was using a 100% accuracy mace attribute swap and lung swap, which would be great if it really was his skill.
Turns out he played with a custom loader on A FREAKING PHONE!!!!
I tried to add a client-side anticheat named "GrimAC", but my server keeps on crashing.
I'm using java 26.2 and fabric mod loader 0.19.3 .

Help/Question What to do to revive a minecraft server?

I own a vanilla Minecraft server. It's been going for five months now, but it feels like it's dying and I'd like to prevent that. Honestly I have no idea how to approach the problem. From a player's perspective I get it that playing or building on a dead server isn't something most people want to do, and a lot of people are just busy right now. But I want to do my best to keep it together and make sure our long-term players have something to come back to.

I created the server out of a hobby and a passion for the game, not for money. There are no pay-to-win features and there never will be, and no resets either.

It's Java, vanilla mechanics preserved with bedrock support, whitelisted with a short application, 18+. We still get people on every day, but rarely more than a handful at the same time.

I'm not advertising, I won't post the name or a link. I'd just rather learn from people who have been there.

What to do to make the server great again?

Help/Question What software should I use for server? Paper vs Paper

I heard Paper is more optimized and the server hosting only has 4gb of ram and generally slow only fit for 5-10 people max but does something with redstone and I do a lot of redstone.

Purpur, I think doesn't do anything to redstone but I don't know if its as optimized as paper

I also heard there is some plugin (forgot name) or some sort that disables what Paper does to redstone but I don't know if it'll affect the performance

I am going to make a 1.21.10 server with 3-5 people and will do redstone farms that require precise timing.

Help/Question Port forwarding only working for one of my friends, two others receive "getsockopt"

So, I spent an afternoon setting up forge's local server hosting, for a 1.20.1 modpack, and it works when I connect to the server via my public IP address, and one of my friends (who doesn't live in the same house as me), can connect to the server via the public IP from my ISP, and I can use the same IP to join too, even without using localhost as the address. The problem arises with two other friends, who both cannot join using the same address, instead getting "Connection timed out: getsockopt" or something similar. They've tried many things on their end, such as disabling IPv6, ipconfig /flushdns (plus a few other command prompt entries), allowing both private and public things for Java in the windows firewall, and nothing works. Every time, they receive the same error, which is weird considering one of them can actually join. The only thing that allows them to join, is if I use a third party port forwarder, like playit.gg, but it's an extreme annoyance to boot up like 4 different things, just so me and a few friends can play for like an hour a day. Is there any possible way to fix this, and if so, is the issue on my end, or their ends? Another thing that could help to note, is that if they try add the server onto their server list (they as in the two who can't connect), the ping bar alternates between blue and grey for probably 20s before saying something in red text like "Cannot connect to server" or something. They can play other servers fine like Hypixel and stuff, just not mine for some reason. Also, I'm on Windows 10, the other 3 are on Windows 11, but I don't think that'd really change much, considering one who's on windows 11 can join regardless.

P.S, I followed TheBreakdown's youtube tutorial, and his website tutorial on port forwarding for most of the process. I am assuming there's an issue with my ISP's port forwarding, but I'm not sure what it could be considering me and one friend can join, but two others can't. We are all running the same modpack, "Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos" in 1.20.1

Help/Question im not very smart. neither me or my friend have hosted servers before. i have questions about hosting your own server and how to let other people on other computers (miles away) turn on/manage said server.

my friend has a pc for the purpose of hosting servers. i would like to play modded minecraft with my friend. and i would like to be able to turn on this server when he is not around. but we do not live with eachother or even near eachother. ive tried looking around for shit that will allow this to happen but i have found it inconclusive. everything seems to Rely on the idea that any other computer that will be managing this server exists in the same building/network as the server. is it possible to have another computer access and manage the server even if it is miles away. i need... to know.... youtube and google are not helping me.

Help/Question best way to manage a self hosted docker server?

Hello, i recently switched to self hosting a server in Docker (using itzg), and was wondering what options i had to manage it through a dashboard-like system. before self hosting i used exaroton, so I'm used to something along those lines, is there anything similar out there? I am reeeeeally new to all of this, so ANY help, even not really related to this, would help. I'm still learning and would appreciate any suggestions for how to better manage my server. thanks!

Help/Question Is it safe to host a server for free using Oracle Cloud? are there any downsides or is it outdated?

Hi,
I have been thinking of following this video using Oracle Cloud to host a server for free for my friends and I to play, and I was wondering if it is safe to do this?

Are there are any consequences to hosting this way, or is it outdated, as it was 3 years ago.
I don't have much experience with hosting servers, I've only done the one where you need a program and cmd open to keep the server running, so any help will be appreciated.

Help/Question Is this computer good enough for a server with 2-3 players?

A while ago I acquired an Asus M80CJ for free and so far it has just been sitting around. So I was wondering if I could use it to run a Minecraft Server for 2-3 players. Here are the specs:

Intel Core i5-7300HQ 2.5GHz
16GB RAM 2400MHz
500GB SSD
1TB HDD
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Currently it's running Windows but my idea is to install Linux (Ubuntu?) because it's something I want to get into anyway.

Would this work or is the PC too bad to provide at least better performance than Aternos?

Help/Question any way to syncronize journeymap data across all players?

I don't mean waypoints, of course, i mean the map itself. i recently switched to self hosting a server from having it up on exaroton, and i was wondering if there was a way to sync the maps for every player. i looked around online and didn't find anything. another question i have is, is there any way to map an entire world without having to run the automap function inside journeymap for every different map layer? thanks in advance

Help/Question Solution for shared Minecraft accounts on one server?

Hi Admins,

I work in a youth-serving facility and we have a Minecraft server on an old Mac Studio running Craft Controller and a few plugins. I am not very experienced with Minecraft.

We share Minecraft accounts on the computers we have at our facility. This is causing an issue because the kids become attached to an account and the stuff that's on it, but then another kid will play on that account and waste the material or die and lose it all.

Are there any solutions for this type of problem? I am imagining something where after signing on to the server the player has to log in again to get their gear, but I haven't been able to find a mod that serves that purpose.

Does anyone have experience with this and has anyone found a solution that works for sharing Minecraft accounts but not sharing the gear on them?

Help/Question How to fix "Player standing on air - force-sending blocks below" log messages?

I am running a fabric 26.3 server with some server side only qol mods and I have noticed this info message filling the logs. For testing purposes I have set up a local server with no mods and no datapacks installed and I still see the message. I have tried enabling the allow-flight but that didn't fix it, the players and I don't notice any rubber banding, ghost block problems nor network problems. I think this message is being sent when a player is jumping or from my testing I saw the messages when I was flying in creative mode.

I want to find the root cause, not just suppress the log messages.

Help/Question MC server admin tool for Linux, web GUI, open source, no LLM use?

Howdy, looking for the above.

I tried Pelican, but unfortunately found they do use LLMs, which is a shame.

I just want to be able to manage mods, mod configuration, server properties, start/stop the server, perform a backup, manage the world, etc from a web GUI.

Help/Question Im looking for a machine to run my small minecraft server

Looking for a way to host my own server, max people on it is probably going to be like 10 im currently paying for one and might as well just buy a machine and have way more storage. Server is vanilla but some people use lightmatica which can stutter the server I pay for (using shockbyte) i just want more control and ability to not spend another 200$ just to keep it up for only a year. I would be fine spending it towards the device I can run servers on so we can have more.
