I took a picture [Seiko] Girlfriend gifted me this watch for my birthday

And I absolutely love it. I had mentioned it to her around last year that I’ve been actively saving up for a Seiko presage and really wanted to get one for myself. Fast forward to the beginning of this year; got stuck with a company who hadn’t paid me for several months and had to basically fight a case to get all those funds back which had drained me physically and emotionally. She Got this to cheer me up and I absolutely love her!

Saw a reel and people were calling it the Bruce Wayne watch. Being a 26yo juvenile Batman fan, I fell in love with this Seiko.
This is the SSK01 GMT 42 mm. What a perfect way to start the collection.
Any other suggestions for belt? Mods or next addition I should be looking at?

Recently got introduced to asterisk watches, while I’m more partial to their quartz offerings (idk that I want to pay 300 for a jump hour when repairs will be exponentially more than that) their designs are very cool, also love studio underdog and the famous “perfectly useless afternoon” from Mr jones watches

Anyone know of any other brands that do similar things?

I took a picture [mb&f, Blancpain, omega] Some of my favorite chronographs!

Post image
40 Upvotes

Here are my main chronographs.

3861 speedmaster. I sold off my vintage and neovintage speedmasters because I think the new gen is so good. The applied logo, recessed subdials, and vastly improved bracelet are all great improvements.

Bathyscaphe is probably one of my most worn watches. The chrono is really nice quality wise. Works underwater and flyback. Really well finished for the money. IMO this is the nicest diver you can buy quality wise that is mass produced.

Mb&F Sequential. One of my higher end pieces. I remember wanting one when they were released but thought I’d never be able to get one. Got super lucky and ended up with one. These have two fully independent chronographs. Good WR and shock resistance too.

Discussion [Omega] Has it really come to this?

Post image

Are Omega just using up spare parts at this point? Just mash together whatever bits from watches we haven't sold and stick a 007 symbol on it?

It's not even that they are ugly watches, they look fine - just lazy and pointless.

Almost disrespectful to the consumer - "Swatch Group revenue is falling and we know you'll buy any kind of slop as long as we market it as a "Bond watch", now please give us $8600"

---------------------------------------------

1/ Omega Releases The Seamaster Diver 300M James Bond And Spectre Collection

For three decades, Omega has sold the Seamaster to people who want to feel a bit like Bond. Yes, it was a silly fantasy, a marketing ploy, but one that worked quite well for the Swiss company. They've been making watches themed after characters, after movies, and in varying sizes and materials. What they haven't exactly done is make a watch for the people who were rooting for the man with the cat. Today, we're getting two new James Bond-themed Seamaster Diver 300M no-dates, one Bond, one Spectre.

Both of these watches share the familiar steel case, 42mm wide and 14.23mm thick, with a lug-to-lug of 50mm. Yes, before you say anything, this is a large watch. I don't think Omega cares much about what we think about it. You get the twisted lyre lugs, the conical helium valve at 10, a domed box sapphire over the dial and a transparent caseback. Water resistance is 300 meters. The bezels are the first place the two models part ways. The Bond variant gets a grade 5 titanium insert with a raised, laser-ablated scale on a matte ground, while Spectre gets a ceramic insert in black with its 60-minute scale also in relief. Looks a bit familiar, no?

The Bond dial is blue aluminium with laser-cut waves, a nod to the 1990s SMP, and the Bond family crest replaces the marker at 12. I'm thinking this will be controversial, but I like the small change. Rhodium-plated indices and skeleton hands glow blue, except the minute hand, which glows green so you can read elapsed time at a glance underwater. The Spectre dial is grained black aluminium with standard Seamaster hands and indices.

Inside is the Omega calibre 8806, the in-house automatic with a co-axial escapement and silicon balance spring, beating at 3.5Hz with 55 hours of reserve. It's a Master Chronometer, certified by COSC and METAS and resistant to 15,000 gauss. More changes can be found on the back, where you see new rotors through the caseback. Bond's rotor is cut into the gun-barrel shape in rhodium, Spectre's is a blackened octopus. Both come on the brushed steel mesh bracelet that debuted on the titanium No Time to Die model.

There are also two limited-edition sets, one for Bond and one for Spectre, each made in 77 numbered examples. Each set contains two watches: the matching steel model, with a numbered plate added on the case flank at 9, and a second Seamaster Diver 300M in Omega's platinum-gold, an alloy of roughly 95% platinum and 5% gold. The platinum-gold watches are 14.29mm thick, with solid white gold guilloché dials, polished ceramic bezels with platinum scales, alligator straps on platinum-gold buckles, and rotors with the emblem in 18k Moonshine Gold. Movement and water resistance don't change.

The Bond set's platinum-gold watch has a blue bezel and a blue gradient dial engraved with the gun-barrel spiral; its box adds 007 on the strap keepers and a blue travel pouch. The Spectre set's has a black bezel and a grey-to-black dial engraved with the octopus; its box adds the octopus on the keepers, cufflinks and cord bracelet, and a black pouch. Both boxes also come with a NATO strap and tool, a loupe and a leather card holder. Each set costs €88,500.

The steel editions are not limited and on sale from today at Omega stores and online for €8,500. See more photos here and the watches on the Omega website.

2/ Mido Pays Homage To The Day Of The Dead Once Again

Since 2020, Mido has been making watches that pay homage to Mexico's Day of the Dead. This year, the DofD dial appears on one of my favorite Mido watches, the Multifort TV Big Date. Ever since the first release, the Day of the Dead watches have been polarizing. Some love the skulls and colors, others think it's a gimmick. I can't help myself, but I think they're hilarious. I would love one. This year, the watches use Alebrijes, the hybrid dream-creatures iconic artist Pedro Linares began making in Mexico City during the 1930s.

The case remains unchanged, which means it is 40mm wide by 39.2mm tall, 11.5mm thick, with a lug-to-lug of 46.85mm. It's steel, mostly brushed with polished accents, with sapphire crystal front and back, AR-coated inside and out. A screw-down crown gets you 100 meters of water resistance.

The dial fades from grey to near-black, with a large calavera dominating the bottom and a crowd of creatures cut into the surface around it, filled in with 12 lacquers. In daylight it's busy and complicated. Turn the lights off, though, and things get even wilder: three shades of Super-LumiNova are used on the skull, the animals and the smaller details separately. The big date is positioned just under 12, and the numeral one is drawn as a bone.

Inside is Mido calibre 80, built on the ETA C07.651, beating at 3Hz with a Nivachron hairspring, regulated in three positions, with 80 hours of power reserve. The display back lets you see the rotor with Côtes de Genève. The box comes with three strap options, all 22mm wide, all tool-free: the integrated steel bracelet, a Milanese mesh, and a red rubber strap.

The Mido Multifort TV Big Date Alebrijes (ref. M049.526.11.081.02) is on sale now, priced at CHF 1,250. See more photos here and the watch on the Mido website.

3/ Sinn Celebrates 100 Years Of Lufthansa With A Grey And Yellow 103 Chronograph

I flew a lot of Lufthansa flights in the past few weeks and you can't miss the fact that they're celebrating 100 years. Hints are everywhere, and they're doing it in a very tasteful way. I even stole a couple of their in-flight magazine stuff linked to the centenary as it's very well done and it's giving me inspiration for print stuff that IAT might do in the near future. The celebration is also moving outside of the aviation domain, as Lufthansa has teamed up with Sinn to create a celebratory watch. It makes sense since both are based in Frankfurt, and both have a very German sensibility about them. The base is the 103 St Sa, Sinn's pilot's chronograph and it's so incredibly cool.

The polished steel case measures 41mm wide and, wait for it, 17mm thick. How wild is that? I haven't had a chance to play around with a 103 St Sa, but I doubt that it's possible to hide that thickness. You get a screw-down crown and pushers, sapphire on both sides with anti-reflective treatment, and 200 meters of water resistance tested to DIN 8310. Sinn also certifies it against low pressure.

The dial and bezel are both dark grey, with light grey indices, bezel numerals and date disc. It's a muted palette, but it matches some older Lufthansa materials I saw in their historical overview they had in cabin. Yellow appears only on the chronograph hands and the central seconds hand, which has a rounded oval near the tip, referencing the window in a plane cabin. That's quite a lot of humor for two German brands and I love it. The hour and minute hands and the indices are lumed.

Inside is the Sellita SW 500, an automatic chronograph beating at 4Hz with magnetic resistance to DIN 8309. You get some 60 hours of power reserve. It's a proven workhorse. Through the caseback you'll see a decorated rotor carrying the edition number, model name and Lufthansa's centenary logo. Sinn ships the watch with both a black leather strap and a textile strap, 20mm at the lugs.

The Sinn 103 St Sa Lufthansa (ref. 103.231) is limited to 100 pieces and priced at €2,890 including tax. I can't find the watch on the Sinn website at all, so maybe it's not up ye. I doubt they sold all 100 already. See more photos here and check out the collection here.

4/ The Louis Vuitton Monterey Returns in Green and Black Ceramic, Like The 1988 Original

I wish more people were paying attention to the watches Louis Vuitton makes. It's easy to dismiss them as fashion watches, but their range is broad and deep, with some watches getting fascinatingly technical. But while they make some cool complications, one of my favorite watches of theirs is the Monterey. Gae Aulenti, the Italian architect, drew the original in 1988 with IWC quartz inside and a black or green ceramic case, which was kind of rare at the time. IWC had introduced its own ceramic on the Da Vinci QP two years earlier, and Louis Vuitton borrowed the know-how. LV revived the Monterey last year with a 39mm yellow gold limited edition, but now we're getting regular collection models and they're done in black and green ceramic. Very cool.

The case shrinks down to 37mm wide, matching the 1988 model, and 11mm thick, 2mm more than the quartz original to fit an automatic movement. Each one starts as a pressed block of zirconium oxide powder and pigment, is milled into the pebble shape on three axes, baked at 1,000°C, then ground and polished by hand. There are no lugs on the watch, which makes it wear much smaller. The steel crown is at 12 o'clock, wider than before, with a Clous de Paris grip. There's a sapphire crystal on top, a solid caseback out back and you get 30 meters of water resistance.

The green case gets a green dial with yellow hands, the black case a white dial with red ones. Both dials are lacquered and finished with a matte varnish, which keeps the color deep without the glare. thin blue seconds hand with a ringed counterweight appears on both versions. There are two railroad tracks, with classic serif numerals in between them.

Inside is calibre LFT MA01.02, built by La Fabrique du Temps, Louis Vuitton's own movement maker. It beats at 4Hz with a 45-hour power reserve, and the 18k rose gold rotor has V-shaped notches. The finishing includes perlage, polished bevels and sandblasted bridges, but it's all hidden behind a solid caseback. I love moves like that. The watches come on black or green calfskin straps that thread through a channel in the caseback, Aulenti's original solution.

The Louis Vuitton Monterey Ceramic is available in green or black as part of the permanent collection for €23,000. See more photos here and the watches on the Louis Vuitton website.

5/ Grönefeld Packs a Remontoire, Flying Tourbillon and Deadbeat Seconds Into the 1941 Quadrivium

Tim and Bart Grönefeld have spent a decade diligently reworking the same case and the same basic movement layout until they reach perfection. This new 1941 Quadrivium is where that patience pays off. The 2016 Remontoire introduced the exposed constant-force governor, then the Principia, Decennium Tourbillon and Grönograaf each pushed the platform somewhere new. Now, a lot of those experiments come together. The 1941 Quadrivium combines a remontoire, a one-minute flying tourbillon and jumping central seconds in a single watch, and it's the most complete thing the genius brothers have built.

The case is the 1941 shape you already know: concave bezel, curved lugs, sculpted flanks and a conical crown. It's 40mm wide and 11.3mm thick, which is slim for this much going on underneath. The first run of watches will be made in tantalum, a dark grey metal that's miserable to machine and seems to create its own gravity field with so much weight. After a run of tantalum watches, the case will be made out of platinum. The cases are polished and get sapphire crystals on top and bottom.

The dial is crowded, certainly, but not in a bad way. A frosted champagne base gets hand-bevelled steel frames that outline each opening. Hours and minutes are positioned in an off-center subdial between 12 and three, with faceted white gold markers and blued hands, while the power reserve sits opposite at 11. The flying tourbillon at six has a three-arm steel cage and stops at the 60-second mark, so you can set the watch to the second. At nine o'clock, the governor spins once every 7.5 seconds, so you get to watch the constant-force system do its job. A long central seconds hand has my favorite complication of all time – it jumps in full one-second jumps. Four more dial colors are coming later.

Inside is a hand-wound in-house calibre with 473 parts and 49 jewels. Two concentric barrels run in series for 50 hours of power reserve, though their real purpose is feeding steady torque downstream. The remontoire is a small spring recharged every 7.5 seconds that delivers the same push to the escapement whether the mainspring is full or nearly spent; the governor softens each release so the gear train doesn't take a hit. Finishing follows recent Grönefeld practice, with gable-shaped bridges around the edge (a nod to Dutch canal houses), a long central bridge, gold chatons, black-polished steel and dark blasted recesses. It comes on a leather strap with a tantalum buckle.

The 1941 Quadrivium Premiere Edition in tantalum is limited to 28 examples, priced at €280,000 before tax, with deliveries starting in 2027. A platinum run of 28 will be made after that, priced at €310,000 before tax. See more photos here and the watch on the Grönefeld website.

Shared to Bulova subreddit but felt more people should see this amazing dial. Was debating back and forth between the magnesite vs sodalite, but pulled the trigger on this beauty. Love how the dial almost looks like a Hubble photo of a cosmic nebula! Grabbed this canadian exclusive from ebay since I wasn't a fan of the two tone version the US gets. Smooth precisionist sweep is the cherry on top.

Discussion [Sergei Sofronov – Python] A one-off watch built around a vintage Patek Philippe movement

This is a one-off watch called “Python — Keeper of Time,” created by Ukrainian jeweler Sergei Sofronov around a vintage Patek Philippe movement from the late 19th century.

The case, dial and decorative elements were designed and made as a single handmade jewelry object using silver, gold, hand engraving and other traditional jewelry techniques.

The strap was made specifically for this watch to continue the Python theme and visually connect with the case and dial.

I wanted to show it here because I’m interested in how watch enthusiasts react to this kind of independent project: a historic movement used as the foundation for a completely new handmade watch.

Discussion [Question] Rolex Explorer I 36 vs Omega Aqua Terra 38 Lacquer Dial: Which would you pick?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! I'm looking to buy my next piece after a hard-earned promotion, and it's between these two. Honestly, the Explorer is such an iconic watch that has always been on my radar ever since I knew about watches. I like how unassuming yet versatile it is as a watch that can fit into any occasion (imo).

The Aqua Terra, on the other hand, has a gorgeous lacquer dial that I'm yet to have in my small collection as a newbie. It's also versatile, and the shark tooth hands are quite iconic. The date function is also a plus.

Both have similar thickness and water resistance. I'm aware that I'll probably need to spend more to get the Explorer I via grey market, versus just getting the AT at any AD, so the AT wins price-wise.

What do you guys think? Is the Explorer I still worth getting, or am I better off with the Aqua Terra? Let me know your thoughts.

Discussion [GS Snowflake vs new Breitling Chronomat B31] - Torn for a luxury daily

Thumbnail

Title says it all. I am sort of town between these two. I have tried both on, and both are supremely comfortable.

It would likely be my one luxury watch for many years to come. And I will never sell (wife is wanting to gift it to me to mark some milestones).

I was/am set on the Breitling, but the Grand Seiko has all of that beautiful finishing, dial, etc. I tend to want to wear leather bands (like a rough, brown leather), and I am concerned that the new Chronomat won’t fit one well with the integrated look (shape of the watch head).

Thoughts? Anyone been down this road?

Discussion [3 year collection]

Post image
149 Upvotes

I’ve started the journey 3 years ago with Daniel Wellington purchase (I’ve gifted it away now). Then:
1. I’ve been gifted the tank quartz Seiko,
2. Bought the Seiko Presage (first automatic watch)
3. Got gifted Bisset (quartz with sapphire glass)
4. Bought Timex Merlin (manual wind)
5. Bought Maen Manhattan 37 (fell in love with the design)
6. And I’ve recently bought the Hamilton Murph 38

What do you think? Planning on saving for a while with the current rotation for a big boy watch in couple of years (dreaming of moonwatch rn but it might change). I wear them mostly to corporate office and just daily usage. Anything crucial missing at this point in your opinion? I know there is no diver or chronograph but I think their time will come, and I’m not trying to buy all of the “best watches under 1k$” so I hope it doesn’t give that vibe too much

Discussion [Question] Datejust or Santos?

Post image
67 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I’m looking for a watch with a white dial and have narrowed it down to the Rolex Datejust 36, fluted bezel/jubilee bracelet with the white Roman dial, and the Cartier Santos Medium. The white Datejust doesn’t seem to be a “desirable” configuration compared to the green and blue, and the Santos seems to be very popular. Which watch would you choose and why?

EDIT: has anyone had both the Datejust and Santos? Which one did you prefer?

Discussion [George FMDOGE034] I bought this $13 Walmart watch as a test run because it has very similar dimensions to a watch I’m considering getting. It sits kind of weird on my arm. Is my arm shaped weird or is it due to something about the sizing?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I haven’t been a watch wearer, but I recently learned a bunch of stuff about watches and got excited. The watch I’m considering is a pre-owned Tissot Le Locle.

I don’t know if the picture really makes it clear. The watch rests kind of toward the far side of my arm and the dial is angled away from me. I have to lift my elbow higher and twist my wrist further down than is really comfortable to get the dial facing me close enough to straight. I tried a Casio f91w and it really shifted over to that far side of my arm too, but I assumed that that was because it was too small for me. Now I think I just have a weird shaped arm. The strap is relatively tight.

What do you guys think? The effect was less pronounced with the bigger watch (40 mm). Maybe an even bigger one would help more?

What's a good watch to celebrate a career milestone? My current collection includes

  1. Speedy
  2. Datejust 36mm blue
  3. Legend diver 39mm black
  4. Glycine Airman No 1 Off-white dial
  5. Seiko SNXS73 white dial
  6. Tissot PRC200 white
  7. Casio A158

No plan to sell any watches.

Any recommendations? I feel like nowadays I am more drawn towards watches that are quiet, but show great taste. Thanks!

Review [Whaler 4 Slot Watch Box] Review of a handmade walnut display box

Thumbnail
gallery
94 Upvotes

After my last watch box purchase, I was still looking for the right display box. I came across Whaler, a small workshop in Korea, and got in touch with them. They sent me their 4 Slot Walnut Watch Box free of charge in exchange for an honest review. Here's my take after a few weeks of daily use.

The Good

My first reaction when I lifted it out was how solid it felt. The outside is deep brown North American walnut, and opening the lid reveals lighter Japanese hinoki inside, a contrast that works really well.

That opening is the heart of this box. As you lift the lid, the stands pull forward, so your watches come to meet you at a 35 degree angle rather than you reaching in for them. It's genuinely smooth and turns picking a watch into a small moment of theatre. I've shown it to my wife and a few friends, and the mechanism is what gets a reaction every time.

Then there's what's missing: cushions. Each watch simply rests on its case back against a walnut stand with a silicone non slip pad, while the strap or bracelet drops through a cutout in the hinoki tray below. I'll admit I was skeptical. I loaded it with everything from my 34mm vintage Seamaster up to my 42mm Speedmaster, and opened and closed it more times than I'd like to admit, and nothing moved.

Whaler does note that very large cases or unusual case backs may not sit as securely. Small touches like the brass posts holding up each stand make it clear this is made by hand by a small team.

Verdict

At $295 USD (about $410 CAD), plus import duties for Canadian buyers, this errs on the higher side, and if you simply need storage there are cheaper ways to get there. But if you have a curated collection and want to actually enjoy looking at it, this box earns its place on the dresser.

I finally got my new watch. I only had an Orient Kamasu in green before this one, and I really like the quality and finish of it; it is a real treat to the eyes. The clarity of the sapphire is a night-and-day difference compared to the Kamasu.

First watch I bought was the Casio Duro a little over 5 years ago. Ended up buying the Bulova Oceanographer not long after that, got hooked, then slowly been adding pieces to the collection. I try to expand into different styles when I add a watch to the collection. Thoughts?

I took a picture [Bulova] Early Fall hike with my Lunar Pilot

Went on a short hike this past weekend and happened to be wearing my Bulova Lunar Pilot. Been wearing this one pretty consistently lately, for such a big watch it wears quite nice on the wrist.

Generally I haven’t been into quartz watches, but this one has been a pleasant surprise - if they ever make the Meteorite dial version in the original 45mm case size, I’d probably pick one up.
