Discussion [Sergei Sofronov – Python] A one-off watch built around a vintage Patek Philippe movement

This is a one-off watch called “Python — Keeper of Time,” created by Ukrainian jeweler Sergei Sofronov around a vintage Patek Philippe movement from the late 19th century.

The case, dial and decorative elements were designed and made as a single handmade jewelry object using silver, gold, hand engraving and other traditional jewelry techniques.

The strap was made specifically for this watch to continue the Python theme and visually connect with the case and dial.

I wanted to show it here because I’m interested in how watch enthusiasts react to this kind of independent project: a historic movement used as the foundation for a completely new handmade watch.

That is an exceptionally well executed piece of jewellery.
I really, really like it!

Do you have a website? I’m intrigued to see some of your other pieces.

I don’t have a personal website at the moment, but several of my watch projects and our collaborations are documented on Viktor Kondratenko’s studio site. They’re collected here under my name: https://kondratenko.studio/tag/sergei-sofronov/

It really is.

So how do you open it for service? Or if you break the crystal

The front and rear bezels are snap-fit, with sapphire crystals on both sides. A professional watchmaker can open the case with the proper tools for servicing or crystal replacement. It’s not intended to be opened or serviced by the owner.

Presumably it's not got any antishock either

Nope, sure doesn’t. Not really much of a pickleball watch, that one…

Super impressive. I was pressed to find the snake at first. Caught myself super inspecting the minutae of the carving markmarking. Between the scales that roam the entire case, the marks on the 'leaf'./ underbelly, the larger 'scales', almost missed the gemstone indices and hatching layers on the crown. Totally insane amount of detail. I have no idea how something like this would be priced, especially with no (???) sales preceding it, but it is an incredible piece of jewlery.

Thank you. I worked on the leather part of this project and followed the development of the watch quite closely, so I especially appreciate that you took the time to look at the details.

One thing that is easy to miss at first is that the snake is not just a flat motif on the dial. It is a continuous three-dimensional form: the head begins on the dial, the body continues across the dial and onto the case, and the very end of the tail finishes on the upper-left lug. That continuity is one of the details I personally like most about the whole composition.

It's as if Chip Foose made a watch.

This is not my style, but it is so incredibly made that I’d still wear it just for how cool it is. I would have loved a python motif in the crown. Overall this is excellent work, thank you for sharing.

Thank you, I really appreciate that. Just to give credit where it belongs, the watch itself was created by Sergei Sofronov. My part of this project was the leather work and the strap. I’ll make sure Sergei sees your comment too.
