Can someone explain this to someone who doesn't understand baseball?

The guy that caught the ball thought that was the 3rd out, ending the inning, so he threw the ball into the crowd. It was only the 2nd out though, so everyone that was on base got to score, giving up 3 points.

Edit: gave up 2 points, not 3.
