The catcher threw the ball into the stands, thinking it was the third out, but it was only the second, so they essentially gave the other team a free run.

I was at this game. We headed out when they were up by 12 or 13, and by the time we got to our car and turned on the radio they were up by 20! Eventhough the Brewers were winning it was almost hard to watch 😅

He’s just out there having fun so they don’t waste an actual pitcher on a game that’s already lost. He is not an actual pitcher.

how would it be a waste to, you know, play a sport for millions of dollars.

u/KC-Slider 25d ago
Pitchers need rest after an outing, less their performance drops.
2
u/Nevermore_Novelist 20d ago
I'm not sure their performance could drop much lower than to allow 20+ runs without a single score for your own team.

u/leon_nerd Aug 25 '26
Can someone explain this to someone who doesn't understand baseball?
72
u/Sokkumboppaz Aug 25 '26 edited Aug 26 '26
The guy that caught the ball thought that was the 3rd out, ending the inning, so he threw the ball into the crowd. It was only the 2nd out though, so everyone that was on base got to score, giving up 3 points.
Edit: gave up 2 points, not 3.
3
u/Consistent_Laziness Aug 26 '26
Minor correction. It is ruled a ground rule double and moves everyone up 2 from their previous base. The guy at 3rd went home on the sac fly. The guy on 2nd advanced because of him throwing it in the stands to score. The guy on 1st went to 3rd. The batter was out on the catch. 2 out of 3 scored and 1 was left at 3rd.
2
u/Sokkumboppaz Aug 26 '26
Yeah my mistake. Either way such a funny sequence in pro sports, especially being down fuckin 19-0 lol. Clearly checked out of the game mentally

what the heck was that pitch too, looked like was intentionally setting the batter up for a home run
63
u/Scatman_Crothers Aug 24 '26
Eephus pitch. Arcs it high at very low speed to catch a hitter off guard and fuck with their timing. Some legit pitchers have it in their arsenal but it’s a rare pitch.
This pitcher is an infielder who they put in during blowouts to not waste any of their pitcher’s arms. AFAIK he only throws Eephus pitches.
43
u/CCB0x45 Aug 24 '26
They were up 19 to zero, instead of wasting the arm of a pitcher they have no chance of winning they put a position player in to pitch because they can't forfeit.
1
u/ElFanta83 Aug 25 '26
But would not the other team be able to score a lot of points? I guess your players will be able to throw some, moreover considering the not grratest hitters,, but some of those hitters will f*** you up, right? Guess maybe that's why they got 20 runs
4
u/lousypompano Aug 25 '26
Even if the team bats .750 in the inning they might get 7 runs before 3 outs. If you watch a home run derby the pitcher is trying to give you the best pitch to hit and they still pop out and ground out a lot. Long and short of it is that no, teams generally can't score that many runs in an inning or two against even non pitchers.
And sometimes it's harder to hit a blooped pitch rather than a 90mph pitch. You never practice it. And if they start to walk too many guys you can always put a real pitcher back in.

Someone explain this
92
u/AmorphousVoice Aug 23 '26 edited Aug 24 '26
In baseball, each team has their turn "at-bat" (i.e., when they are able to hit the ball). In that turn, there are 3 "outs." When the hitting team commits 3 outs (through things like hitting the ball and it getting caught by the other team before the ball hits the ground, like how it was in the video), their turn at-bat is over. In this video, the player who caught the ball, (#44 Julio Rodriguez) thought that him catching it meant that he forced the third out, which is why he threw the ball into the stands for a fan souvenir. In actuality, it was two outs, meaning that the hitting team's turn was not over. Because of this, the "runners" on the hitting team were able to score.
I should also point out that at this point in the game (with the team in the blue shirts losing by about 20 at the end of the game), this was pretty inconsequential, but it was VERY embarrassing, especially since the guy who committed the error is one of the best in the league. It also encapsulated that for them it was just one of those days where it seems like nothing goes right.

u/multicultidude 27d ago
Thanks a LOT for taking the time to explain this. Now I’m able to follow up here. What a mistake of that player…😳
6
u/TheAwesomeMan123 Aug 24 '26
I never knew that. Basically, just because you out the hitter from catching the ball before it grounds you still need to deal with players on bases.

1
u/Godloseslaw Aug 23 '26
I feel like batters should have to switch to the other sides of the plate if a position player is forced to pitch. But it also shouldn't count against their official batting stats.
5
u/PolitelyHostile Aug 24 '26
They should just have mercy rule ffs. Like it's fun to watch a position player pitch but it's all just a waste of time draining the clock.

1
u/SavaRox Aug 23 '26
Since they're already losing so badly, they didn't want to waste one of their bullpen pitchers to close out the game so they put in a positional player instead (someone who doesn't usually pitch).
Sometimes they do better than some of the actual pitchers because batters are used ro trying to hit 90+ mph pitches and the slower lobs throw them off sometimes.
53
u/SuspiciousCanary6636 Aug 21 '26
The team was getting beat 19-0 so they put a 3rd baseman in to pitch. Many times, these players haven’t pitched since high school. You’re essentially a sacrificial lamb led to slaughter.

Baseball is such a weird sport that these guys have so much time to lock in and figure out the details of the game, and then they do this.
These guys gave up at some point. Lobing pitches like they're pitching to a kid. Then this?
Really gonna lose by 3 touchdowns? Bananas.

In high school my team lost a soccer game 13-0. We weren't able to play in the local high school league, so we joined an adult rec league and spent every weekend getting absolutely manhandled. Got to stop at taco bell after games though, which made it worth it.
3
u/Epic_Elite Aug 22 '26
Thats wild.
In my son's rec league, this happens all the time because the teams get so lopsided.
We ended up on a good team and my kid got to experience a winning team after about 4 seasons of absolute defeat.
The fun part is that when you're up by 8 points, they start applying handicaps. Like coach would offer a candybar to anyone who gets 'that kid' an assist. You know, the kid who may have a disability but you cant really tell and their mom put them on a team for socializing, otherwise they're just really quiet.
It's pretty hilarious watching your team destroy the competition but they're all in the box for like 10 minutes and the kid gets like 6 touches on the ball in a single possession and the good kids are just passing to him relentlessly because they want the candy bar and then the chears and excitement when he finally snags a goal.
League gets supper mad if you win by more than 8 points though. Ref starts calling free kicks all the time too, to give the other teams a chance.
The coach made up a "left foot only" rule one time, too. It gets pretty slap stick.
2
u/Rocketboy1313 Aug 21 '26
"What would you say led to this... outcome?"
"Slaughter?"
"I was trying to be polite."
"Well, we had expected to be playing against humans, when the bionic six showed up in soccer gear we kind of just gave up."
3
u/Braylien Aug 21 '26
I don’t follow baseball but that pitch looked insane. Why would he throw it like that?
7
u/AdLatter1807 Aug 21 '26
They put a 3rd baseman in to pitch to not bother wasting anymore of their pitchers, and his giving them lobs like that so they can’t hit a home run. It’s what teams can choose to do to mitigate and really bad loss.
1
u/Lost-Peanut-1453 Aug 22 '26
“Lobs like that so they can’t hit a home run”
Wouldn’t that make it easier to hit home runs?
1
u/lousypompano Aug 25 '26
No also because of the angle. If a ball is coming in hard and straight it's easier to connect squarely. If it's coming in at a sharp angle it's easier to pop up or ground it into the dirt. If you watch home run derby they throw hard and straight.
2
1
1
u/Epic_Elite Aug 21 '26
They were doing that the whole game.
Lobbing them in like they're tossing for the home run derby. Did you catch the score at the bottom? I wasnt joking. That was a 0-22 game. It's like they took a dive for money.
5
u/LVII-57 Aug 21 '26
They were doing that the whole game.
-Someone who didn't watch the whole game.
They put a position player in at pitcher to not waste their pitchers' arms in a game that was already statistically over.
5
u/xHugo_Stiglitzx Aug 21 '26
It was the 3rd baseman. They subbed him in when it was apparent they were going to lose. A pitcher's arm has a lifespan, so why wear out some of your highest paid players to lose. Have a position player pitch and save your pitcher's arms.

Mariners fan here- all of them need to be tossed over the wall. First the Manager then the players. They were one win away from the World Series last year…. But just after Raleigh broke the record… he disappeared. Gone. This year- he walks around like he doesn’t give a shit whether he plays or not.
My old coach would say - show up and give it your all every play, every inning every game. We slacked off one game (after a lot of underage drink fest) My coach looked at all of the players on the bench that were actively watching the game…. Called them up- and pulled every single starter and backup. Put in the 3rd string reserves. 7 players played -we lost. He was still mad the following game. Same 7 played. Lost.
Never made it to State.
Never ever forget that it’s a privilege to play. Toss em all.
Go Hawks!!!

u/evacc44 Aug 20 '26 edited Aug 20 '26
The inning ends with 3 outs. Players sometimes throw the ball into the crowd for fans at the end of the inning. The outfielder thought this was the third out, which it wasn't so he threw the ball into the stands while the inning was still going on.
When this happens the original catch is still an out, but all runners on base get two bases automatically and the play ends. Normally with a catch like this with 2 outs the runners most likely wouldn't have advanced at all. In this scenario two bases meant a run scored.
In this scenario it didn't affect the game because the guy that screwed up was getting destroyed by double digits anyway. Just a dumb embarrassing thing to do in the moment.
1
u/ErgoDestati Aug 22 '26
Why would they get two bases automatically?
The catch means the batter is out, why would the play be continued for any reason past that?
1
2
u/Crush-N-It Aug 21 '26

u/Fowlah Aug 20 '26
Can someone explain like…everything? Why is it 19-0 that seems like a lot? Is this a minor league thing or that novelty league? Why’s he pitching so…limp?
3
u/Eccohawk Aug 21 '26
Because by the time they reached the end of the 7th inning it was already 13-0 and the end of the 6th it was 11-0. That kind of lead is fairly insurmountable, so what has started to become more commonplace is that instead of burning another relief pitcher and putting yourself in a potentially worse position to win tomorrow, you end up having a position player do the pitching. They obviously aren't pitchers, so their speed is more in the 50s or 60s, rather than 80s or 90s. They're really just trying to get it across the plate and score strikes or hope that the batters hit a grounder or fly that's easily fielded for an out.
As to your other Qs, it's a major league game. Sometimes blowouts happen. Usually not quite this lopsided.
9
u/CommonReal1159 Aug 20 '26
I had to look it up because I thought the same thing. A real MLB game. 22-0

5
u/Mr_White6789 Aug 20 '26
Yeah thats rough but can someone explain why the pitcher gave him a freebie?
21
u/AdministrationOk8888 Aug 20 '26
That's called an "eephus pitch." It's a position player pitching, not an actual pitcher. When the score of a game is that skewed, the losing team doesn't want to waste their relief pitchers' arms because then they might not be available in the next game when they're actually needed.
So a guy who usually plays 3rd base or whatever will come in to pitch and throw those high arc, low speed pitches just to get the game over with. Ironically, an eephus can sometimes be really hard to hit since they're so unpredictable and unlike most big league pitches.
