Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

These people are idiots for keeping their child around that dog.

I used to do breed rescue with Rottweilers. I evaluated dogs that were in shelters to see if they could be saved.

One time we brought our kids, who were about 7-10(they stayed far, far away and dog was on a serious leash). We evaluated a big male Rottie and I watched the dog stare at the kids so intensely - I knew he would have bitten them.

Needless to say we passed on that dog, but that experience confirmed my belief that if a dog does not like kids, they essentially cannot be trusted. And no, there's no magical farm or owner where they won't be around kids. Pitties, Rotties and other large breeds can kill/damage children and small dogs - harsh but true.

As much as I love dogs, you are correct. We had a dog that hated my 6 month old son, and we gave him away. Didn’t abandon him, didn’t take him to the shelter, gave him to friend with no children. There is no reason for them to take a chance with their daughter’s life.

We had to get rid of our 2 year old Shiba when we took our newborn daughter home this June. She was showing all kinds of weird predatory behaviors towards her. Nothing like growling. It was more predator/prey behavior where she was trying to mimic her cry. She was OBSESSED with trying to get to our daughter. So much to the point that I gave her one and a half 50mg trazodone tabs over the course of 12 hours because she would NOT calm down. The drugs had zero effect on her, even tho I know they've knocked her out before. She nipped at the back of her head as one of the first things she did. Shibas are VERY prey driven, and some more than others. She'd run around the backyard looking for baby rabbits to kill and eat EVERY SINGLE TIME I'd let her out. It was NOT worth the risk, even with her being only 15lbs. A fucking PIT BULL? Should've been gone yesterday.

I don’t think it’s just a breed thing. I have a pit bull who is as sweet as can be and loves my grandkids. They are never left alone with the dog, as no child should be with any dog.

Perhaps, but shibas were bred as hunting dogs in Japan. Finlee (the one we had to re-home) encountered an opossum in my parent's backyard over a year ago, and would still go looking for it when we'd go visit. She never forgets a creature encounter
