Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

I have 3 dogs (1 large, 1 medium, 1 small) that are the bestest boys and girl ever. They are so sweet and loving and gentle.

BUT!

There’s a guy on reddit who was attacked by his dog during a seizure and he’s had like 15 surgeries to fix his face. He often posts updates and such of his journey.

I also have seizures. And now it often crosses my mind how my dogs will react if they ever see me having one. Will they attack me? They’re animals, so that possibility is always there.

If any of them EVER acted this aggressive towards me or anyone, we would immediately have to rehome. It’s too dangerous.

Edit: to note, only 1 of the 3 has pit, and it’s less than 10% American pit bull terrier

If you have any kind of bully breed, I would consider rehoming it, as seizures can trigger them to attack and/or kill:

2011, Pennsylvania: Woman having seizure has her ear ripped off by family pit bull

2012, Florida: Woman mauled by adopted pit bull as she suffers brain seizure

2013, UK: Epileptic woman mauled to death by her own pit bulls

2016, UK: Man suffering epileptic seizure mauled to death by his pit bull that he had since it was born

2017, Illinois: Man with history of seizures killed by family pit bull

2018, Florida: Pit bull mix spooked by owner's seizures mauls her

2018, Tennessee: Pit bull triggered by man's seizure breaks out of its cage and mauls four people

2018, Ohio: Woman with history of seizures mauled to death by her own pit bull in front of her child

2019, Massachusetts: Woman suffering seizure mauled to death by her own pit bull

2019, Pennsylvania: Man suffers seizure and is mauled to death by his own pit bull

2019, Argentina: Man with Down's Syndrome has epileptic seizure and is mauled to death by his own pit bull

2020, UK: Epileptic man suffers seizure and is mauled to death by his own pit bull

2020, Canada: Man suffers seizure in friend's home and is mauled to death by friend's pit bull

2020, Mexico: Man with history of seizures mauled to death by his own pit bull

2021, Ohio: Woman with history of seizures mauled to death by roommate's pit bull

2021, Ohio: Man mauled to death by pit bull during a grand mal seizure

2021, Florida: Woman having seizure mauled by her own pit bull. Husband tries to stop attack and is also mauled.

You could argue they searched a lot for data. Or maybe it happens so much that it's super easy to find the data.

I suspect it's the latter and it's a sign of the breed rather than the person speaking out against them.

It’s such an oddly specific issue too, and interesting that pits would see seizures as threatening and not just frightening - I am now curious to see if/how often it has happened with other breeds, because I’m wondering if having a dog in general is just a bad move for epileptics…

But then again I’ve definitely seen a video of a young woman with epilepsy who’s dog was trained to warn her/the family when a seizure might be coming 🤔

My mom has a service trained GSD and he warns her of her seizures. It’s pretty interesting seeing how they pick up cues and safely move her away from objects and tell her to sit down before they hit. Once she has the seizure he will monitor her the whole time until it passes. Once it’s over he stays right next to her to calm her. Truly amazing.

I was about to say aren’t there medical support dogs for seizures…

can you find an equivalent number of seizure-related attacks from any other breed type?

No, they can’t. I’ve had bully breeds when I was younger and they passed from old age but now that I have kids, I would never. They can be great dogs but can also flip a switch with zero warning.

I’m not saying they all would but there was one I had that I didn’t allow around anyone other than my wife and I, he was very hostile towards almost everyone without warning. The day he began to be hostile towards me indoorsI tried training/vet/everything I could think of. He became an outdoor dog on the farm who avoided most everyone until I found him in the barn one day (11ish years old, maybe heart/kidneys)

What's your point here? That someone educated has joined the discussions? OH NO.

Or are you mad that you can't just spread bullshit and others will just let you be?

There's a seizures bot on r/banpitbulls of just examples of pits attacking people who had a seizure. It's absolutely wild.
