Discussion This is a disaster waiting to happen.

The dog isn’t allowed to be around a toddler because he growls at her. I don’t get it. A family dog is supposed to get along with the whole family. Why are the parents concerned about why the dog “doesn’t like her”? What about the child’s safety?

Why is no one pointing out this is barrier aggression? Pit bulls are fine. A lot of dogs do this. It's a psych thing

And if this were your child, would you be willing to remove the barrier and risk your child being mauled? This is a human being, a child we’re talking about here. You don’t just remove a barrier and find out. You protect your children at all costs.

They make up the majority of serious dog attacks and yet they are only a fraction of the population. They were bred for BLOODSPORT, FFS. It doesn't mean all of them will turn violent, but the ones that do can kill an adult human easily.

I agree, ugh! I've seen so many videos of pit-type dogs actively wagging their tails as they happily maul a human or other pet.

And the bending over backwards to blame anything but the breed is exhausting.

Pitt Bulls are fine, you guys! They are not responsible for more human and dog fatalities than all other breeds combined! Oh wait, they are, but this is definitely not that! It’s just barrier aggression!

My mom has a neighbor that had a pit for 6 years. They recently had a baby, and the pit attacked the baby’s face. Luckily the baby survived and got skin grafts and is healing nicely. The pit obviously had to be put down. I used to confidently tell my mom it’s not the dogs it’s the owners, but now I am legit scared of pits and it makes me feel bad because I know how loving they can be.

Edit: I remembered another thing with my mom and pits. This one is the owners fault. She was camping with her brother and our boxer we’ve had since he was a puppy, and she decided to walk around the camp grounds. She had him on a leash, and these people left their 2 pits UNLEASHED AND FREE roaming around a campground with a LOT of people, even after they were told multiple times to leash them. And woe and behold, they charged my mom and our boxer and attacked. They were both able to get away, my mom fought them off(what a badass), and NOTHING HAPPENED to the owners🤬. But now our boxer, who used to not hurt a fly, has trouble with dogs now in general. We have been slowly able to get him to chill out around other dogs, but he will ALWAYS bark and growl at pits now 😢

Fortunately more and more people are waking up, unfortunately it's usually once we're confronted with the horrendous violence and breed traits we were told was a myth and to not worry about.

Like I know of many cases where there are pits that hang out with children and are so sweet all the time and they die old never having attacked anyone, but through all of their lives, you always have to think about the “what ifs” and keep an eye on your dogs around children, no matter how sweet they are 😔

It's perfectly reasonable to hold the position that pitbulls shouldn't be pets. It's not worth the risk of having them around. That poor baby is likely scarred for life, literal decades, because its parents wanted to own a pitbull instead of pretty much any other breed.

So many breeds out there which were selectively bred for being gentle or playful or active, but people still say "nah, gimme that bloodsport dog bred for gameness. They're misunderstood and I'll bet my life (and the lives of every person or animal they come into contact with) that it won't be one of the innumerable examples of well-loved, well-trained pits that mauled someone to death."

Someone in this thread was just arguing with me that they should be allowed to take dangerous dogs that are violent towards children out in public, and society and children should have to adjust to accommodate their dangerous dog.

This is how all pitbull owners think. They quite literally don't care if their dog is dangerous to the public. They think everyone else should change to accommodate them.

And often the cost of that hubris is paid in lives.

Take the Bennard family, for example. "It's the owner, not the breed!" posts all over Facebook about the two pits they'd raised since mere weeks old. They were brought up with love by a family who trusted them enough to leave them around their small children and take photos of them lying on each other.

Except then one day the pits snapped, mauling and partially eating their toddler, then killed the infant the mom was holding onto while trying to interrupt the attack, then injuring the mom so badly she required hospitalization. They'd owned the dogs for years with not the faintest hint of aggression, and were sure it's just bad owners who end up with violent pits.

It's absolutely wild to me that someone would see things like that and be like "but not my pibble, she'd only lick you to death!"

Yeah and if you checked their Facebook posts you see they treated those dogs like family. Had them for 8 years and adored them.

Same with the woman in Ireland and her fur babies. She adored her dogs to the extent that she even made a video of them saying "If one of us dies, I'd rather I die first" and then her four XL bullies decided to tear her to pieces on her birthday.

On a lighter note, here's my favourite pitbull owner video. It's about these dangerous pitbulls that escaped into the streets and started attacking people and animals. So the guy tells the news "It's not the breed; it's the owner", but then halfway through the sentence he realises that he's the owner.

Fortunately/unfortunately it was a fresh baby at the time so I don’t think it will remember but yes, I’m slowly coming to the sad conclusion that pitties probably shouldn’t be pets, especially around kids ☹️

My neighbours pit mauled their rat terrier to death who they've had for 6 years, who grew up with their pit. Nothing like having to visit your neighbours after they get off work to explain such a situation.

Also, nearly been mauled twice in my life, both time were pits. Thank God it never came down to it, but uhh.. Yeah. That's just my personal experience and only violent experiences with dogs.

My coworker showed me pictures of her house with blood everywhere. Idk why she showed me this lol. But she had a pit bull and another big dog. It might have been 2 pit bulls. They got in a fight and there was blood EVERYWHERE. I was already afraid of pit bulls but that was wild

My brother had a pitbull and it never attacked a baby, or a human. He took the dog from someone who kept it locked in a room all day so the dog had really bad separation anxiety. My mom had a shitzu-yorkie mix and whenever she would get mad she would jump up and bit the pitbull’s ears. The pitbull would literally get up and walk away.

Then maybe it was special needs? Either way, I literally can’t trust pits anymore no matter how much I want to. I mostly blame owners, but when the owners wouldn’t hurt a fly and they have a very sweet pit that suddenly attacks their baby? How can I trust them anymore

As the video in the post says, barrier aggression is almost never the only aggression a dog has.
