Much like people complaining about digital video games and how McDonald's manages to stay in business; never assume your preference is the same as the average of consumer behavior.

The people that want simple cars and don't need much on their cars are happy with used older cars.

Why should I buy a bare bones 15K new budget car when I can get an older 5K used car that offers more confort and likely is more reliable on the long run?

Ha! The reliable used car for $5K is largely a thing of the past, my friend.

It really isnt. You just dont like the options that are available.

I’ve always driven beaters, and I’ve been looking to replace my 20 yr old Honda for months. It really has gotten bad—owners sell to Carmax and Carvana before attempting to sell to individuals. (I don’t consider FBMP to be a legit resource—all flippers or curbstoners as best I can tell.) If you haven’t been looking recently, I think you’d be surprised.

I look regularly. Tons of options and always has been. Fbmp is the only resource. No one is selling anything anywhere else.

To be fair, $5k Hondas were nearly impossible to find 15 years ago too, at least with under 200k miles on them. I’ve owned quite a few cars under $10k — none of those have ever been Japanese due to my personal mileage/age requirements.
