Much like people complaining about digital video games and how McDonald's manages to stay in business; never assume your preference is the same as the average of consumer behavior.
this needs to be higher. The number of people who think that their anecdotal personal preferences are the norm when they clearly are not is ... staggering. About basicaly any topic.
I don't go to Starbucks because coffee made at home or from the gas station is good enough for me but I don't hate on the business for having a 20 car line every morning. I'm just not their target audience and that's okay.
This is the sort of thread that makes it obvious Reddit is disconnected from reality. The same as the “I don’t want a camera on my phone, I want a battery that lasts a week” comments.
used car sales make up 75% of car sales, which means car manufacturers don't care about what 3 out of 4 people buying cars actually want because they aren't buying a new car. car companies are designing cars for 25% of the buying market...
The people that want simple cars and don't need much on their cars are happy with used older cars.
Why should I buy a bare bones 15K new budget car when I can get an older 5K used car that offers more confort and likely is more reliable on the long run?
I’ve always driven beaters, and I’ve been looking to replace my 20 yr old Honda for months. It really has gotten bad—owners sell to Carmax and Carvana before attempting to sell to individuals. (I don’t consider FBMP to be a legit resource—all flippers or curbstoners as best I can tell.) If you haven’t been looking recently, I think you’d be surprised.
To be fair, $5k Hondas were nearly impossible to find 15 years ago too, at least with under 200k miles on them. I’ve owned quite a few cars under $10k — none of those have ever been Japanese due to my personal mileage/age requirements.
It’s the same with small phones - the passion people have for them online just never translated into people actually buying them. Even Apple couldn’t do it with the 12/13 mini iPhones but you’ll still see loads of people say they want one (I’m typing this on a 12mini).
The average of consumer behavior is dumb as hell. Never assume that because humans do it it's good.
Not saying you're saying that but god damn we have this perverse desire to chase the money and assume if people want it then it must be good. Like bruh has anyone every considered that most humans are just a bit dumb and impulsive and we need to chill the fuck out and consider what we're doing? Nah because that doesn't make the line go up.
Do you leave money on the table even if the person paying you is making a less than optimal decision? If your boss called you and said they were tripling your pay for no reason would you talk them out of it?
Clearly not judging by the amount of fucking jeep grand wagoneers I see driving around. And hummers for some reason. As well as 80k trucks that are used for the same thing a camry can do. Buying a jeep grand wagoneer or something along those lines blows my fucking mind. If you make stupid money and you like them, go for it. But no way all of those people are making that kind of money. I can't imagine taking on that debt for something that's so poorly built. People are way less adverse to having negative equity and carrying it over than I'm capable of wrapping my head around
