fr this is a fucking appliance

Give me a 90s shitbox with modern safety features and sure, bluetooth for music and podcasts, and I am set. In fact at this point I would pay extra for that because it doesn't exist and I want it more than the shit that's out there.

‘91 Camry here with 170k miles and a Bluetooth adapter ftw.

Shit i dont even want the safety features. Lane departure warning? Automatic braking? Lane collision alert? Bunch of hippity hoppity bullshit theyve added to make vehicles more complicated and expensive.

With people being on their frickin phones, I much prefer the car behind me be a recent car with god damn EAB thank you.

u/Hydrax120 7h ago

Or the one infront of you malfunctions and brake checks you- no thanks. Ill pass on all of it.

1

u/crow-warden 2h ago

That literally never happens.

Also, if you ever get brake checked and hit them you were following too close. Drive better. Better yet, get a car that brakes for you when your poor driving skills would otherwise cause you to hit someone.

Bad news, that's not going away anytime soon. All those "great" features are required by law in most of the big industry nations.

u/Hydrax120 7h ago

Yeah thats why I drive older shit. Trust me its alot less to go wrong

Every time I travel for work, the rental I get will chirp at me for goddamn something - and it’s honestly more distracting and annoying than anything

Last time, the back up alert for oncoming vehicles in your peripheral / potential blind spots VIBRATED MY GODDAMN ASS

I have a 2023 car that does not have lane departure warning, automatic braking, lane collision alert, or any other safety features other than blind spot lights in the rearview mirrors and a high speed warning that you can set yourself (or turn it off entirely).

My car does.not.give.a.fuck if you want to yeet yourself into an overpass wall or abruptly whip the vehicle directly into the lane next to you which just happens to be currently occupied with another vehicle.

I get into a rental and I feel like I've been put in the vehicular version of training wheels. Changing lanes? Seat buzzes. Slow down too slowly? Car slams on the brakes. Cross over the line on an empty road because you don't wanna run over the dead skunk? Dingdingding and you have to fight the fucking steering wheel.

Like holy shit can I JUST DRIVE THE CAR?

edit: Obviously it does have things like seatbelts, all the airbags, backup camera, and so forth. I just don't have anything on my car that actively fights me for control with the vehicle or nags me if I'm doing something it doesn't like.

Seriously sometimes for work I gotta drive a 2024 Ford F-150 and the backup camera beeps to hell and back anytime I need to run over tall grass to turn around. Like this is a truck you should be able to run over grass and small sagebrush without the thing flipping it’s lid

Y'all can't drive for shit, you need that lol

1

u/EternalNewCarSmell 9h ago

Oh I more meant physical safety like to where I don't get crushed if I'm in an accident.

The software will stop being supported long before any of the mechanical parts are dead

They have no financial incentive to keep the software reliable/useable on old cars

So we just end up with glitchy software for a perfectly drivable vehicle

Planned obsolescence

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Flow724 8h ago

Early Tesla Model S are still seeing updates. Not at the rate the newer vehicles do, but they are not "unsupported". My first gen Model 3 received three new updates so far this year with new features, all for free.

1

u/Miserable-Role9555 3h ago

Thats not what planned obsolecence is. The software doesn't need to be supported forever. Its not a smartphone that will reach end of life someday and be unable to download new apps.  These cars can just use whatever the final version # of their software is for 20 years until the mechanical parts of the car finally break down

I want my paid off 2006 Corolla with the $10 Bluetooth radio adapter to live forever. 😔

1

u/EternalNewCarSmell 7h ago

Funny thing, I was actually thinking of getting a corolla and even used they are stupidly priced for the miles on them anymore. Like come on guys, if it's $18k with 100k miles on it why would I not just buy brand new for $7k more?

u/DiMiTri_man 9h ago

What about the slate auto truck/suv? It doesn’t even have powered windows as standard.

1

u/EternalNewCarSmell 9h ago

That looks like it's headed in the right direction. Not really interested in a bulky SUV or truck though. I want something like what the Volvo 240 used to be.

1

u/DiMiTri_man 9h ago

It is a pretty tiny truck compared to whatever the hell is sold here in the US.

1

u/EternalNewCarSmell 9h ago

Ford has trucks that are plenty small I guess. It's just not something I'm interested in.

1

u/crow-warden 2h ago

If that ever comes to market, I suspect it won't sell very much because the majority of people do not want a bare-bones vehicle. This is one of those times reddit really doesn't reflect reality.

1

u/PotassiusOfBanania 8h ago

No offense, but what's holding you from buying a '90s shitbox with an amazon screen on the dashboard instead?

1

u/EternalNewCarSmell 8h ago

1) the effort/cost of keeping a car that old from running well

2) the difficulty of even locating one in good shape for a good price

3) that safety stuff I mentioned. My wife has a newer car and t-boned someone at 50 mph when they ran a red light. The hood didn't compress even as far as the radiator. Air bags did not deploy. We were able to drive the car home and later to a collision place to be repaired. The the other car (a late 80s Toyota) was nearly torn in half. I am not going to get that level of safety in a 90s vehicle and people drive like idiots so I will take safety and hating the interior over gambling with the lives of anyone in the car.

1

u/PotassiusOfBanania 8h ago

And what's so bad about getting a new one with the safety features you want? (Legit question, I'm not trolling)

1

u/Rubikova_Kocka_1878 5h ago

A Volvo or a Mercedes W124 / W126 will give you that safety.

And a national anthem of an unknown European country playing where ever you appear.

1

u/EternalNewCarSmell 5h ago

I loved my Volvo S60 and would gladly drive one again if I could find one in good shape from before the Chinese acquisition.

1

u/Rubikova_Kocka_1878 4h ago

V70s and XC70s ftw

Or the 940 series with those souped up engines

1

u/Exact-Conclusion9301 7h ago

You won’t get Bluetooth in a “90s shitbox.”

1

u/PraxicalExperience 3h ago

Sure you do. Just replace the stereo head unit, and hey, bluetooth.

Then when you get your next shitbox, just move the stereo over to the new one.

The real problem is that the 'cheap shitbox' doesn't really exist any more.

1

u/bcool111 6h ago

Theres so many options now for an android head units that will give you car play and you can add a backup camera and pretty much most of the functionality of new car.

1

u/Kuuzie 6h ago

The things I'd do for an old but new Chevy Astro Van.

2005 Impala with under 90,000 miles here. I love this car, and will drive it until it won't pass inspection. It's no beauty, by any means, but we are tuned in together. Not the greatest gas mileage, and the electronic options aren't accurate (says I've used 6 gallons of gas when it's really more like 9). But she's mine.
