“Everyday they keep asking to see my girlfriend”

If they hadn't washed the towel, it could damn well stand up on its own

23

u/lemming2012 1d ago

You never asked if it could ever stand it in the first place.

White lotus season 3. Drop everything go to YouTube and search Sam Rockwell lotus....

Best 4 minutes of acting and hilarity you'll find.

32

u/jaymochi 1d ago

Sam Rockwell just absolutely cooking, with some of the best pure reaction work ever put on film coming from Walt Goggins.

9

u/LayWhere 16h ago

And he dropped that shit in one take as well.

Absolute masterclass.

7

u/Locke_____Lamora 23h ago

That scene finally got me to watch the show. Pretty great overall but that scene is the peak of the show.

9

u/GamerKratos-45 22h ago

One of the craziest things I've ever seen. I could not believe Sam Rockwell's character would take that turn.

Ah yes, the greatest diplomats the United States can muster; USMC Grunts....

44

u/-Badger3- 21h ago

They tried to make a Japanese flag to hang in solidarity but somebody ate all the red crayons.

2

u/yokozouna_ed 20h ago

Gunny tried to make someone fess up, but they didn't.

4

u/Burt_Rhinestone 20h ago

Gunny’s farts smell like wax.

5

u/yokozouna_ed 20h ago

Never said Gunny wasn't possibly a suspect.

20

u/stockflethoverTDS 21h ago

You could tell USMC from AF or Navy when they came into the music bar I used to play, they came to have fun but they knew not to misbehave in a foreign Asian city where punishments by the local govt or their Gunny will be harsh. They also were mostly tough af. The Navy guys they just kinda did whatever according to their own thoughts.

2

u/FlatSpinMan 15h ago

Another one murdered a Japanese woman in Okinawa again just a few days ago.

Honestly I trust them magnitudes more than the president which is a sorry state of affairs.

33

u/yokozouna_ed 20h ago

I'd trust a rotting sock soaked in cat piss to represent the United States before I'd let the president or any of his minions do so...

11

u/The_Ghast_Hunter 20h ago

A piss sock doesn't accept bribes

45

14

u/Cautious-Area-4141 22h ago

mite mite kono nazekenai no yankee yaro, yabaiiiiiiizehhhhh

nah i bet they were trying their best not to laugh their arses off

3

u/JesusaurusRex666 18h ago

I’m not trying to call you out or be rude or anything, but what is nazekenai intended to mean? I find it interesting that you have enough understanding of Japanese to know yabaize and mitemite, but not that yankii means something very distinct from the word it owes its roots to. Just curious as a student of Japanese.

eta: yes the Japanese sailors would almost definitely think this was hilarious. All the SDF people I’ve met have been very chill, though it’s mostly a small sample size of people in the airsoft community willing to play with/against foreigners.

Wait. Does Japan still use the Rising Sun flag?

459

u/Ragewind82 1d ago

That is the Japanese Naval flag, it's a little different from the imperial flag - it depends on how the sun is centered / offset.

It was in use for decades before they started the co-prosperity sphere takeover thing.

167

u/Nyther53 1d ago

The germans similarly still use the Iron Cross.

33

u/Freddie-Peterson 1d ago

Or so the Germans would have us believe...

66

u/Nyther53 1d ago

I mean, it's painted on the sides of the tanks, it's not a secret.

109

u/auronddraig 1d ago

They should paint it on the side of one of these...

12

u/Low-Refrigerator-663 1d ago

I think this is refering to Warsaw, Poland.

You can probably surmize how dark of a double entendre this is.

4

u/Nyther53 23h ago

I don't know how you get Poland from Norm Macdonald reading a newspaper?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Zirkulaerkubus 20h ago

It's a variant of the one y'all are thinking of, but in essence, yes.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Pedantic_Pict 21h ago

Fun fact: nazi Germany didn't widely use the iron cross. The aircraft roundel of the third reich was the bar cross, which has straight arms as opposed to the flared arms of the iron cross

22

u/Noob66662 1d ago

Actually the Sun being centered or not just depends on whether it is Navy or Army. Japan's imperial flag is the same as modern day. It's their national flag.

The reason the rising sun flag got associated with WW2 was simply because nations were occupied under the control of the Imperial armed forces and they used their respective flags.

4

u/Imaginary-Group1414 18h ago

For starters, the flag of the Empire was the Hinomaru and the same as Japan's current national flag.

→ More replies (3)

37

u/Misty2stepping 1d ago

Yes. Their navy still uses the flag.

7

u/an_older_meme 1d ago

Yes indeed. One of their ships visited Hawaii and guess what ensign they were rocking?

2

u/BullTerrierTerror 18h ago

The naval one. The one you see in the video.

→ More replies (35)

7

u/borski88 1d ago

It's used in their Navy, not intended for civilian use.

3

u/Logical_Box_4645 19h ago

That's just their flags.

Japan/Nippon (日本) literally means origin of the sun which is what we translate to rising sun.

They made relatively small changes after the war, but didn't drop the overall styling of their flags.

3

u/DoomRamen 1d ago

The Finnish Airforce used a swastika until 2017.

3

u/gorilla-goo 20h ago

To be fair it is a sick ass flag

3

u/Aircon-007 17h ago

Japanese naval ensign guys, Reddit historians moment

12

u/Pinksamuraiiiii 1d ago

It’s not looked upon well, this would be like Americans using confederate flag. Which people still use, especially in the South.

25

u/stupidber 1d ago

Confederate flag was created to represent the confederacy. Rising sun flag was just japan's flag for the better part of a century.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Often_Forgotten2 18h ago

The official flag of Japan has always been the current flag (red circle on a white background), and this flag on the video has always been the flag of the naval forces.

69

u/PMMEURDIMPLESOFVENUS 1d ago

... Or they just held up something funny for a few seconds to give 'em a laugh.

11

u/DangKilla 22h ago

Yeah, I was just in Okinawa in May. Due to outside influences, Post WWII, even local Japanese consider Okinawa like a country within their country. Different mindset. For example, its got lovely beaches, so people do actually tan there on purpose. Unlike the west which seemed to quit caring about sun block, people in mainland Japan use sun umbrellas.

4

u/karmaisnonsense 18h ago

It goes well beyond WW2. Ryukyu was its own kingdom until imperial Japan forced an annexation in the late 19th century.

2

u/JesusaurusRex666 18h ago

I’m solidly on team parasol and I’m a white dude in my forties. Don’t even get a second glance in Tokyo.

3

u/FinishComplex3743 7h ago

For Tokyo summers, I'm team igloo. East Asian summers are unbearable

12

u/West-Astronaut8515 19h ago

I'd classify it as humor/banter between them. As in, if I were underway in this situation, I'd do the exact same thing as a joke

5

u/T_Money 16h ago

I am prior USMC and have drank with more than my fair share of JSDF members, both enlisted and a few mid level officers; there is very little chance that they would see this as rude.

Despite the reputation Japan might have as a whole, our militaries generally get along very well. While stationed in Japan if we met our counterparts randomly at a bar it was always a good time

There still making movies and the fan base actually helped save the town the show is based around.

Oarai was hit hard by the earthquake/tsunami and subsequent nuclear plant disaster years back. They were a fishing town and that was hindered by said nuclear plant disaster. But the show gave them a new market, it made them a tourist destination and it actually sustained the town. If you go to Oarai now you'll see that the town is basically embraced the show and there's pictures and cutouts and photo opportunities all over the place

This is a recruiting poster for the JSDF, including the Navy.

Yes you can see her panties.

Don't underestimate how Japanese Japan is.

12

u/Nomeg_Stylus 1d ago

Those aren't panties. They're wearing blue swimsuits underneath.

8

u/JstaFriskyHusky 1d ago

Military ads comes in two forms, men doing cool stuff or hot women doing cool stuff. Also I'm pretty sure that's from an old anime and none of them wear pants from what I remember

2

u/JimJamTheNinJin 20h ago

The anime is Strike Witches

→ More replies (1)

6

u/BigHardMephisto 20h ago

I remember when warthunder released the AH-1 Kisarazu, a Cobra attack helicopter with an anime version of it's pilot emblazoned on the side. It also has a unique pilot model.

It took the forum and reddit by storm for a bit, as it was in fact a real helicopter and pilot (used for recruiting).

What people seem to forget about the military is; they're after your 16 and 17 year old boys to get them to join when they're 18. And a death machine with a sick ass anime girl on it based on the real sick ass helicopter pilot would 100% drive up numbers. The guys that are most likely to join are the guys most likely to glue that image in their mind until years after they blow their signing bonus on something stupid.

4

u/zanotam 23h ago

So those aren't panties and that's just characters from an anime. One of the early examples of turning thing X into cute girls. I think this is loosely based upon an actual real world fem only group of flyers during the 20th century but now it's literally girls flying and oh man I haven't seen Strike Witches in possibly a decade so I don't remember the specifics.

3

u/Lyranx 23h ago
