Literally 😭😭

People act like a woman expressing her sexuality is the same thing as killing people and starting nuclear war 😭😭😭

Same thing with Sydney Sweeneys Sports ad. No, it's literally not that deep 😭. Tiktok just likes to take republican / conservative view points and repackage them as progressive 😭

It's literally not that deep

Wish I was.

The issue isn't that Sydney Sweeney did anything, it's that gambling degenerates who can't pay attention without tits on the screen are now mainstream.

We used to shame people like that into being better. Now they're the most reliable American gooner- I mean consumer.

Sydney Sweeney is the personification of idiocracy.

Eh, I don't know how old you are but in terms of media this is the least sexualized period I can remember in my 40 years.

The problem is Sweeney herself has become a meme to just mean boobs and it targets a certain audience, which is dumb hick conservatives willing to do sports betting constantly.

Exactly. And we're putting that demographic right at the center of normalcy.

Gen Z men are bankrupting themselves on sports gambling. Sydney Sweeney is helping. It's stupid all the way down.

u/Dr_Fortnite 17d ago

it's also gross to put her naked next to female athletes because there is a comparison being made when women dont want weirdos sexualizing them during sports

u/Murky-Relation481 17d ago

I think the problem is more that Sweeney at this point represents solely sexualization, sports are always sexualized, no getting around humans in peak physical form being sexually attractive, but when you bring it down to just sex it removes the skill and talent aspect of it altogether.

I mean you can be of both opinions. Sweeney is someone who engages in the culture war BS, so her doing something is annoyingly, culture war related, but you can also say Carpenter is just doing normal sexualized pop stuff that's been a thing for decades and making a big deal out if it is trying to drag it into the culture war, so stop fucking caring about it and just let her be.

Nuance is actually allowed on the internet, even in shitty subs like this one.

What topic? I mean what even is the topic here?

I didn't even equate this to that topic (talking about the OP picture). I equated it to low effort bait into some weird conservative "poor Sydney!" dialog and a way to disparage Sabrina Carpenter at the same time.

Most people's issue with Sydney Sweeney is she's MAGA. As far as the hot posing goes, I'm all for it lol

4

u/gorgewall 17d ago

"Hot girl in provocative pose" is not why people are dogging Sweeney.

That's what conservatives like to repackage the complaint as so they can get you on their side, but it's not what the original complaints are about. Ask yourself why you're falling for their switcheroo?

5

u/Buschlightactual 17d ago

What are people actually mad about

3

u/gorgewall 17d ago

Initially: jeans commercial using eugenecist dogwhistles. Not a cute "haha 'jeans' sounds like 'genes'" play on words, but an ad agency-workshopped strategy to deliberately provoke the controversy and use that for further marketing. Like, haha, yes, controversy sells, but does your controversy need to be throwing red meat to Nazi ideology?

Later, Sweeney's faux-ignorance of the controversy, how she's being used, who it's meant to appeal to (not just "horny people"), and so on. oh i'm just making a jean commercial teehee i have no stake in politics or political messaging teehee i'm just going to continually align with some of the shittiest people in society by complete accident teehee

Currently, marketing gambling. In case folks here have been hiding underneath a rock, oodles of people have been dogging on anyone who shills for FanDuel / DraftKings / Kalshi / whatever other fucking "prediction market" for months. It's an industry that preys on people's hope, especially in times of economic distress, to further pick their pockets, and that's kind of shitty. It doesn't help that the owners of these companies are often also massive fucking shitheads politically or donate to them, so Sweeney hopping in with yet another one of these groups really gives the lie to her previous disavowels.

It's very this.

So is it really this deep or not that deep make up your minds

The American Eagle jeans ad was a throw back to a much more famous Brooke Shields Calvin Klein jeans ad. In which Brooke Shields talks about basically the same thing.

1

u/gorgewall 17d ago

Yeah, and if we had tons of people in government slipping thinly-veiled references to their Nazi horseshit into press releases and policy at that time, you can bet there would've been some hay made about that, especially if Shields was also done up to be blonde-haired, blue-eyed, and explicitly proclaiming her goodness on those metrics.

Like, damn, do we have to explain CONTEXT to motherfuckers? Is that where we are?

7

u/lucky_jack777 17d ago

You know what, yes please explain the context to me. Name one thing the jeans ad affected in any meaningful way. If you hate trump, go advocate against him. You'll actually change things in the world. If you hate American Eagle or Sydney Sweeney, you can rest assured that no one's life is being affected by a clothing brand. The metaphorical house is on fire and you seemed worried about the furniture arrangement.

I'm reading "And the Band Played On" which is about the AIDs epidemic and the LGBTQ+ response and your comment reminds of it.

The doctors: "Hey, we need to test you so we can try to stop the transmission of this deadly disease."

The gay community: "You just want to test us so you can put us into camps and euthanize us!"

The doctors: "What?!? No, we don't."

the gay community: "Well the Reagan administration doesn't like the gay community."

The doctors: "Ok? Well, we're not even associated with the Reagan administration so why does the Reagan administration's position matter to this conversation!"

1

u/Buschlightactual 17d ago

I think her having big boobs and being conventionally attractive was the double meaning. Not Nazi ideology. Touch grass😂

1

u/JalapenoPopPoop 17d ago

People act like a woman expressing her sexuality is the same thing as killing people and starting nuclear war

No one has ever acted like that though? That's a complete strawman

So just to play devils advocate, do you not see any connections between hypersexualized cultures and upticks in sexual/physical violence, social or behaviors problems? Just saying “Queen, Slayyyy” and letting people market themselves and participate in a hypersexualized society til their hearts content, with no downstream considerations for younger generations growing up under those standards is wild.

It’s akin to saying, ohhh free market capitalism will sort itself out, or police investigating themselves following a wrongful death will work out totally fine for the public’s safety.

Societies and cultures do need to have standards, sexualizing everything will have ramifications, but we’ll see who’s on the right side of history there. I’m happy to be wrong, I’m just very skeptical… 🫤

4

u/LiverpoolBelle 17d ago

Given that there's places where women are forced to wear a full black covering with only their eyes showing and that sexual violence is very prevalent still, I wouldn't say so necessarily

1

u/Atoge62 17d ago

Totally agree, I think extremes in either direction will be harmful on society. But to put yourself in a young girls shoes, to whom carpenters music is obviously catered to, will inevitably lead to girls thinking their best bet to get a partners attention is to over-sexualize themselves, which can lower one’s internal self-worth, and all the harm that follows. Of course not everyone is as susceptible to these hypersexualized corporate marketing schemes, but the most vulnerable of our communities will likely bear the greatest burden of this added personal suffering. There absolutely should be standards for what gets marketed and to who, in this country.
