I mean its not far off. They just stop eating and stop looking after themselves, they stop trying to live basically. That includes the males, so its not like they're just doing it to protect their eggs. They have a biological kill switch built into them that's triggered after they mate.
It’s funny, the collection of PhDs didn’t arrive at that conclusion.
You can’t swing a cat in a comment section without hitting someone who knows more than a principal investigator doing on sight work and the associated research.
Except that they did come to that conclusion. Its called senescence, its triggered by hormonal changes in their optic gland. Its the reason octopus only reproduce once in their lives.
Look it up, its not like its some sort of hidden knowledge or anything.

That's pretty much what every octopus does. They just give up and die after they mate.
