Disney won lol

u/Wilsonian81 12h ago

I would like to congratulate Disney on beating Disney for the top Disney place.

u/Lestat_de_Sade 12h ago

Peasant brained bullshit. We won nothing, some people with already enough money, got more money.

18

u/SuperArppis Captain America 11h ago

Too true mate...

u/PrinceRobotVI 7h ago

Not to mention demonstrating to studios that tiered cinema experiences with slightly more footage for much more cash are completely viable.

I hope you all enjoy watching less of a movie or paying higher prices in the very near future! 🥳

u/Conqueror_is_broken 5h ago

What annoys me the most is how now my copy of the film feels not complete. I'll probably buy the new version. And what is going to happen for other people watching it in the future ? Are they going to see the new version with doom being teased to get used like 15 movies later without any other teaser ? Are they going to watch the normal version and then watch it a second time just before Doomsday ?

Generally pleasant meets generally unpleasant

Yeah but Avatar is super lame bro.

I feel like this is a list showing ticket price inflation more than popularity. Where is the list that ranks them by number of tickets sold?

  • 1. Gone with the Wind (1939) 202.3 million tickets
  • 2. Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977) 178.1 million tickets
  • 3. The Sound of Music (1965) 142.5 million tickets
  • 4. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) 141.9 million tickets
  • 5. Titanic (1997)136 million tickets

14

u/Instantbeef 12h ago

Eh, I also imagine there were less movies coming out back then and you also were not competing with VHS,DVD, or streaming depending on when those movies came out.

5

u/WhiteSpec 11h ago

Good point but presently the number of consumers is way higher too.

3

u/Fitnessmotivation86 11h ago

If this is a scale of popularity, then we would need to combine every way you can watch a movie. Back then you could only see a movie in theaters, there was no waiting for it to come to streaming.

4

u/pgcleader06 12h ago

Much easier to sell movie tickets in those eras.

2

u/redlancer_1987 12h ago

Sure, but the logic still stands.

Let's say Cameron makes Avatar 6, but announces there will be only one showing for one person and the ticket will be auctioned off. He gets a rich Saudi oil mogul to bid $3.4 Billion for the ticket.

do we then put it on the list as the "highest grossing movie of all time"? I guess technically yes, but kind of defeats the purpose of the list which is conveying popularity through money earned.

3

u/pgcleader06 11h ago

And if they put out Avengers Doomsday but each movie ticket costs a penny and 2 billion tickets are sold worldwide, is it fair to say that it is the most popular movie of all time? Same kind of extreme reasoning.

1

u/redlancer_1987 10h ago

yes, that would be correct. In my scenario most eyeballs on screen = most popular movie.

If you just want highest highest grossing movie then the current chart is fine. The newest movies will essentially always be toward the top of the list because ticket prices will only ever go up.

1

u/pgcleader06 5h ago

That makes no sense from a supply and demand perspective. But kudos for doubling down instead of conceding the logical flaws in arguing by extremes.

1

u/Ccjfb 11h ago

I would be fine with that scenario. I don’t need to see Avatar.

7

u/TranslatorDirect496 12h ago

Tickets are cheaper meaning you can sell more.

Accounting for different time periods is impossible.

2

u/redlancer_1987 11h ago

Yes, every era has dramatically different social and economic variables making comparison difficult. Going by money makes the least sense. I'd say the one constant that even makes sense to compare is number of eyeballs on screens.

1

u/Ccjfb 11h ago

That’s true. I did t think of that. I wonder if there is a calculation that can even that out.

1

u/GatorBo69 4h ago

It’s called “adjusted for inflation” on boxofficemojo.com that basically just ranks movies by number of tickets sold

•

u/Alleggsander 58m ago

God I hate comments like this.

That list is directly in the same wiki page that shows the highest grossing. In fact, Gone With the Wind is the first picture you see when looking up highest grossing movies.

The cinema also isn’t as popular as it was. The economy is in the toilet and movie outings are insanely pricey. Many people opt out of seeing a movie in theatres in preference to watching something when it comes to streaming services or sailing the high seas. Ticket sales are down across the board. Because of this, judging the popularity of a movie on its tickets sold alone isn’t accurate anymore.

3

u/CartographerWorth488 12h ago

Avengers Endgame: 430.4 million tickets
Avatar: 356.6 million tickets
Spider-man Brand New Day: ~210-220 million tickets

-1

u/redlancer_1987 11h ago

world wide. My list was US. If you want to go worldwide the entire list is essentially Chinese movies.

3

u/CartographerWorth488 11h ago

okay. and GWTW is an 87 year old film with multiple theatrical releases, plus released in a time with no real entertainment competition. it was originally released on a 4ish year run. movies now are in the theater for 8-12 weeks maybe?? it sold 60 million across that time frame. it has been re-released not 2, 3, 5, but 8TIMES!!! (‘47, ‘54, ‘61, ‘67, ‘71, ‘74, ‘89, and ‘98) thats all contributed to the 202 million tickets.

it’s not a knock on an epic film, its not comparing apples to apples anymore because entertainment landscape has changed so drastically

2

u/CartographerWorth488 11h ago

for the record: its numbers in 1939 were 15-20million avengers: 97.7 million

1

u/Yeseylon 1h ago

Oh fuck, I keep saying Sound of Music is the leader when adjusted for inflation but I guess it's Gone With The Wind I was thinking of lol

0

u/somacula 12h ago

Imax and 3D are also a thing

1

u/redlancer_1987 12h ago

That's my point. One $25 Imax ticket is 10-15 people watching Star Wars in 1977

19

u/StarFox-6 11h ago

Lmao these companies are giving you slop and you’re thanking them for it. “We won”. Bro just donate your money to Disney

4

u/grimfett165 Daredevil 11h ago

I’m more surprised by Spider-Man: Brand New Day dethroning Avatar: The Way of Water as the third highest grossing movie of all time.

4

u/hadyz98 7h ago

Your money won

4

u/OkAd481 3h ago

Funny thing is the new Spiderman is in there at 3 with no re-release just chilling with almost 2.5 Bils

3

u/Nyloc3 10h ago

Bro who cares

9

u/Parabellum111 12h ago

*2 re-releases later btw

26

u/Aetheriusman 12h ago

*Avatar got more re-release than Endgame btw

-1

u/TechnicianOk3133 12h ago

Avatar had at least 3

4

u/Parabellum111 12h ago

Yes, and re-releases of any film whatsoever shouldn't count towards the total box office. Soon Cameron will re-release Avatar again and dethrone Endgame, and then Endgame will be re-released again and it's back on top again, and so goes on. It's ridiculous.

5

u/TranslatorDirect496 12h ago

How so? Rereleases happen all the time, and box office is how much a movie has made during its time in theaters.

What’s ridiculous about it?

1

u/Simongergo514 6h ago

I just implied that they may relase Avatar again in 2029, on its 20th anniversary.

1

u/Simongergo514 11h ago

Avatar is going to be 20 years old in 2029. Just saying.

1

u/Charles12_13 11h ago

Endgame had re-releases other than Encore?

2

u/mickdarling 12h ago

For this particular metric, they obviously need James Cameron to write and direct a series of Marvel films.

2

u/kayej17 10h ago

was that what everyone wanted though?
marvel being cheap by stitching extra scenes in endgame and replaying it back in theatres is called winning now ?

4

u/joefeghaly 12h ago

Aren’t both movies owned by disney now anyway?

3

u/Recent_Company_3724 11h ago

Yay Disney won lol

4

u/Conqueror_is_broken 12h ago

I don't know why endgame worked more than infinity war. It clearly was the best marvel movie.

4

u/Aetheriusman 12h ago

That's the reason why, because it was such a great movie more people went to see the sequel, to see how it ends

4

u/spaceraingame 12h ago

I still prefer Infinity War

3

u/Conqueror_is_broken 12h ago

Yeah. I was totally surprised by the ending. If someone told me "yeah the villain is going to win" in a super hero movie I would never trust them. The fact they completely went with this ending is mind blowing. Everyone was speechless seeing they erased half the cast. I kinda wanted them to embrace it and have to pay the consequences but hey... As thanos said they couldn't handle that defeat they had to rewrite the story... Endgame kinda undid what infinity war did and I'm afraid we won't ever get a movie with a villain winning like that ever again.

3

u/Ccjfb 11h ago

We all knew the next movie was going to end with the good guys winning. It was shocking to watch but we knew they would undo it.

2

u/Conqueror_is_broken 11h ago

I don't remember if I was aware this was going to be a 2 part film. I think if there is no part 1 in the title most people would assume this film was about to conclude this saga. But tbh if they just ended on a lose and decided to keep going with that. I would have been happier. This film had the balls to do that I can't think of any other super hero movie with bad guys winning.

3

u/Nightkill-AryKal Captain America 12h ago

As a movie it was better yes but endgame was the perfect finale to a 22(?) movie long saga. Also IW was part 1, so almost certainly the part2 wud earn more.

0

u/Conqueror_is_broken 11h ago

Well, that's not true. First part make more profit most of the time because even if 99% loved the film and go watch part 2, you always have people who aren't going to watch part 2 because they didn't like it. And you have to watch part 1 to go to part 2. Part 1 doesn't force you to watch anything else.

This doesn't work on this because marvel movies have a ton of films you have to watch but if I had to guess I think lord of the ring 3 had less entries than the first one.

1

u/UChess 6h ago

Spider verse 2 made more than 1 and I have a feeling that the success of 2 means 3 will go even higher

1

u/Appropriate-Brush772 5h ago

True you have to watch part one before you would even want to watch part two. That doesn’t mean you had to watch it in the theater. Everyone talked about how great it was and then on Christmas of that year it was released on Netflix, the largest streaming platform worldwide, months before Endgame was released. (Netflix users all over the world were having streaming issues that Christmas because so many people were trying to watch it that day). It’s the same way Deathly Hallows Part 2 grossed more than Part 1- you may not have seen part one in the theater but you may have at home so you want to see part two in theaters.

1

u/Conqueror_is_broken 5h ago

All over the World ? Well, not entirely... One small village of indomitable Gauls still holds out with the chronologie des mĂŠdias.

Here in France we have to wait like minimum a year and a half to get a film on a streaming platform. It sucks. That's a reason to burn that country.

1

u/Appropriate-Brush772 4h ago

Yeah, that’s true it was only released in the US and Canada on Christmas. But considering Netflix is the most popular streaming service in the world and VPN’s are a thing, yeah, worldwide!

I did a tad bit of digging and it was also released on Sky in early 2019. And the same day that Endgame came out in theaters Canal+ in your own country released it for streaming in tandem with Endgame hitting the theater

1

u/Conqueror_is_broken 4h ago

Canal+ isn't the kind of streaming platform people use. It's like giga premium and very expensive for things that don't even stay for a very long period. They usualy get a movie first and as soon as an other platform can get it they lose the right. And this is a platform where you can buy or rent movies.

It's usually better to pay for a theater subscription and watch everything day one for cheaper. That's what I do. 23 to go as much as I want every single day.

1

u/Appropriate-Brush772 4h ago

I guess my point is that there were plenty of ways to watch it other than the theater. I mean, we haven’t even talked about digital download purchases. In Sept of 2018, anyone around the world could purchase a digital copy and a couple weeks later a DVD/BluRay. All round the world! Even little Adiuni in Gaul could purchase it! And they never released the download purchases for Infinity War but they did for Endgame and Endgame broke a record for most digital purchases in a weeks time in the US and many European countries. So anyone could buy it, even little Aduni, he invites his friends over to watch it, next thing you know they are buying tickets to see Endgame!

3

u/ghoul_ranger 11h ago

Good writing isnt what factors in the most when it comes to box office success

Its usually novelty, commercials and media presence. In endgames case, Infinity war was the best thing to come out of the most popular movie franchise and Endgame was the culmination of everything after Infinity war's cliffhanger

It was almost a given it was gonna end this way

1

u/Charles12_13 12h ago

More hype

1

u/TDStarchild X-Men 11h ago

I have Infinity War as the better one too, but they’re 1 and 2 for best Marvel movies so not like it’s a chasm

1

u/djack171 11h ago

Clearly lol

•

u/DavyJonesRocker 54m ago

You can rewatch Endgame multiple times. Infinity War, maybe once or twice a year.

•

u/smcl2k 25m ago

I don't think you know what "multiple" means.

•

u/Hopeful-Newspaper 29m ago

maybe people doesn't like rewatching movie where the hero lost? like there's difference between best movie and rewatchable movie

•

u/abellapa 27m ago

Endgame was the Sequel to iw

2

u/pgcleader06 12h ago

They say we won. They didn't say what we lost.

2

u/pigeonwiggle 7h ago

Disney owns them both - they win

we're just the idiots caught in the crossfire.

1

u/Longjumping_Spite_35 11h ago

Featuring Micheal Brandon as that one Senator who backed Steve Rogers' show during WW2.

1

u/two2teps 10h ago

They're going to rerelease BND with the deleted Night Nurse scenes.

1

u/ImitatingADog 8h ago

And then Avatar gets re-released in 2029 and is #1 again and they keep trading the spot every time one gets re-released again

1

u/Balatheil 7h ago

some where, James is screaming "IDC if its 7 hours Long! stitch the fcking Trilogy together and rerelease, god damn it!"

1

u/pid_geon 6h ago

Blood thinks we're part of the team kekw

Can we have two columns, with one being initial release and a second factoring in the re-releases.

1

Question is 3 billion possible 🥶

1

u/andyroid92 2h ago

Disney won

1

Wow you guys must be SO fun irl lol

-1

u/padfoot12111 12h ago

Better than avatar. Way I see it they did a rerelease to steal 1st, we get to too. I don't approve of film dlc but I am fine with a rerelease.

0

u/Charles12_13 11h ago

The real question is when are they gonna re-release Avatar like in 2019 when Endgame did become number 1 briefly?

1

u/SquintyOstrich 7h ago

Probably will at some point. And weird Avatar fans will proclaim they won when it retakes the box office lead.

1

u/acuenlu 5h ago

If their fans still being dumb enough to continue going to the cinema just to "win" yeah they will. The only objective is winning more money

0

u/SwingFinancial9468 11h ago

There's no freaking way The Way of Water made that much.

0

u/Gorilla_Dookie 11h ago

2.9 billion in 2009 isn't the same as in 2026 or even 2019

2

u/DeusVultSaracen 11h ago

If you want to adjust for inflation the entire list gets jumbled, not just the top few.
