Successfully obtained a MacBook Neo for the price of 0$

Soooooo I js won a macbook neo giveaway from a large-scale youth event hehe (im beyond thrilled, the chance of me winning was literally 0.0667%)

This is my first ever apple product! Pretty sure I disappointed my ancestors since I'm so uncultured, I had to watch a tutorial vid on how to set up a macbook for the first time. (i used to be a computer science major, mind you. idk what is happening to me)

The speaker quality is honestly better than Lenovo Thinkpad and Asus TUF! I like it that there's no backlit on the keyboard and that the keypad is a clickling type. /srs

Too bad I don't have any other apple devices, so I couldn't experience the airdrop feature much.

I might actually fall for the apple propaganda one day cuz of this.

Anyways, I'm just here to share my excitement. Though some beginner friendly tips/recommendations are always appreciated!

Should I buy my son a MacBook Neo?

Post image

My son is in the 8th grade and wants a MacBook for school. We are considering the Neo but don’t know if it is strong enough. He plays a fair bit of games such as Stardew Valley, Minecraft and Hollow knight. Will the Neo be able to run those games well enough to play? I just want to make sure the Neo will last him a long time because it says it uses an iPhone chip.

So for a little bit of context, I currently have a 11 inch iPad Pro M5 512 gigabyte. Absolutely love that thing. Love the display. I have an Apple Pencil Pro, have a keyboard from my previous M4 iPad Pro. Safe to say I like it. However, I am looking into getting a MacBook Air. I would love to get a pro, but I definitely don’t feel I’m there yet in terms of usage. Now to the point, I just saw that Best Buy has a deal to get a M5 air base model for $200 off. It’s technically more powerful than my iPad. so I figured that’s all I would really need. while also getting to keep my iPad. I am debating, however, whether it would be worth it to trade in my iPad, get a 15 inch model, upgrade the RAM to 24, and have that as my daily driver. Like I said not much of a power user, I am currently trying to find work from home, and I do dabble in videos, nothing long, not multiple lines, but maybe someone else would like to chime in. I’ve had pro models and everything in the past, and I enjoyed, but this time around I’m trying to be more simplistic, but I’ve never kept airs long-term

Macbook recommendation for univ students

Hi, so for context, I am a first year nursing student and I’m looking for a laptop or mac that would last until I graduate and prepare for the boards.

I want the 13 inch Macbook Air M5, but here’s the thing. I think that I’ll just mostly use it for making reviewers, attending online classes, research, and Netflix. Do you think that it’s worth it to get the Macbook Air M5 or just get the Neo instead?

Steal or no deal? - M4 Macbook Air

I'm considering getting a Macbook, either used or new, and I'd like to get a second opinion.

So the subject would be a 13" M4 Macbook Air, with 16gb of ram, 256gb of storage and 100% max capacity, for 890€ (a hair under $1,000 USD).

I'd assume this is a decent deal, but I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to Macs.
So would this be something I should go for, or should I skip out and look for something else?

Any macbook air 15 keyboard cover that doesn't feel like mush?

I have some cheap keyboard cover I got off amazon for my macbook air 15. It does a good job keeping dirt away but it makes the keyboard mushy and over a period of time my hand starts to hurt cuz I got to press harder.

I do like how to the keyboard feels without a cover, clicky and I can type fast but I want a cover so it doesn't get oily.

Anyone have tried any good brand cover that makes keyboard not feel like mush and nice to type on? or are they all the same feeling?

Vertical dark bands on my macbook

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Yesterday afternoon a [horizontal/vertical] band suddenly appeared on my MacBook Pro's built-in display. I wasn't doing anything special, just using the ChatGPT app. No drop, no liquid, no pressure on the screen.

Important context: the display was already replaced about a month ago for an earlier, unrelated issue, by an independent repair shop .

It's a MacBook Pro 14" (2023, M2 Pro, 16 GB), macOS Tahoe 26.4 battery health normal.

What I've noticed:

- The band does not show up in screenshots (Cmd+Shift+3), so the image macOS renders is fine and the problem is in the display itself

- It's not there at boot. It appears after a while, once the machine warms up

- The bottom of the screen, right where the band is, gets extremely hot to the touch, while the sides of the screen stay cool

- My external monitor (LG UltraWide) works perfectly fine

- I restarted several times, and no update or install happened that day

I've seen at least one other person mention the same thing happening while using the ChatGPT app. I'm pretty sure that's a coincidence, but has anyone else had this?

Any reason to get an AIR rather than a Pro other than the cost?

Been going and forth on getting a macbook air or a macbook pro, looking to create ios apps via ai vibe coding (personal use), photoshop and edit videos. My understanding is the performance for these tasks is fairly the same but anything else I should consider it? Wanting them to last a while as well.

MacBook Microphone Not Working

My MacBook audio isn’t working. Features like text-to-speech aren’t working, and when I FaceTime someone, they can’t hear me. I’ve tried resetting it and updating it, but nothing has worked. I’m not sure what else to do. Any helpful advice would be appreciated!

Which should I keep: I bought a Pro 14” M5 pro 20/18 core 64GB 2TB or Air 15” M5 base 10/10 32GB 1TB

I ended up buying both, to try them out.I got the air first at full price but then found a store selling this pro model brand new n box for $800 less than the Apple Store at the Apple Store this setup is $4349. But I only had to pay $3600 after sale price compared to the MB air $2200 at full price.

The M5 pro is obviously super fast but I have nothing to use that speed for really, except local LLM maybe experimenting with them while looking for work. The 64GB would keep it fast for 5-8 years I think. The 2TB pro SSD also has 2x faster read/write speed than the air. Extra thunderbolt ports, and thunderbolt 5 instead of 4. A fan for sustained use. The nanotech glare tech is decent too.

The M5 air is nice since bigger screen, slightly lighter. The fan less experience without worrying about dust intake. And MAINLY the bigger screen.

The air handles all my workflows now easily without an issue, and probably decent enough for most games (but I have PS5 for that).

If you consider the price is not a factor, at least I will splurge the extra $800-$900 this once.

Can you help convince me which one to keep? Don’t consider the price, maybe I’ll run windows parallels also and can be a true PC gamer with it. The pro should stay nice forever, but just wonder if I will really utilize it. I basically want to become an expert in all AI things, as I was just laid off, replaced by AI lol.

$1,600 Apple gift card

I have a $1,600 apple gift card from trading in old devices. I need a laptop and an iPad and i don’t know which combo to go with.

I mainly use my laptop for minimal stuff like filling my taxes and keeping those files, creating personal documents, shopping that requires a computer (big purchases type stuff) and the occasional sims 4.

I mainly use my iPad for social media, YouTube videos, streaming apps, reading, games while traveling, FaceTime and pretty much anything else i feel like i need a bigger screen for.

My thoughts? MacBook neo + iPad Air but i wanted to get some opinions before i actually purchase it.

I will be needing an Apple Pencil and a Magic Mouse so those need to be accounted for in the budget. I do also have Apple for education so i can get that discount.

M5 air vs M4 vs NEO for writing, Graphic design, AI features and to use with my IPad

Hey, so I current have a windows laptop but want to move to a Mac as I have an IPad m5 pro and like its comparability with my iPhone. I was wondering if I should get the M5 air on or the neo.

I want to use it to write, and design some poster/ edit photos. I also want it to have some AI features, which is why I want to look for the M5 rather than the m4 but not sure if the AI features are gimmicky.

Also unsure if the AI features are good on the NEO.

Should I also wait for black Friday or could I get a good deal on prime day?

I've been using the M5 MacBook Pro for about four months now, and the CPU load has never gone past the halfway mark.

Post image
30 Upvotes

I'm a backend software engineer. I recently bought a MacBook Pro with the M5 chip after using an M1 MacBook Air for about four years. I chose the Pro because I wanted to do things the Air couldn't handle, namely running multiple Docker containers alongside a heavy IDE (JetBrains).

What amazes me, though, is that I never push the CPU past even half its capacity. Under normal conditions, only the memory gets loaded, at around 80%, while the CPU hovers at 20-30% and the fan never kicks in.

I'm happy with my decision to buy the M5 MacBook Pro, but I sometimes wonder whether it's overkill for the work I do.

Any way to make MacBooks with crooked battery speedy?

Hi, I have a 2020 i5 MacBook Air that is running suprisingly slow. And when I say slow, I mean "losing frames while playing 720p YT video" slow.

From what I've researched, I believe it may be due to its degraded battery, as Battery Health just says "Service". Unfortunately, the battery exchange is an expensive repair and I have no warranty that it will actually solve the issue.

My question is: can a MacBook be brought to its full speed without the repair? I've thought about installing Linux on it, but I hope to keep macOS somehow.

UPDATE: I've tried unplugging physical battery connector and MacBook slowed down even more, it now boots up for around 10 minutes and is unusable in this state.

It seems to work perfectly and has a 100% battery with 1 cycle count only which i like, but can this bend cause performance issues in the long run? I plan to use this for a few years.

Hello! Which is the best macbook for school/ university?

Hi! I’m looking to buy my first MacBook, but I’m completely lost on which one to get. 😭
I mainly need it for university and studying, but I’d also like to play some games occasionally, like The Sims etc. Gaming isn’t a priority, though.
Price isn’t an issue - I mainly want something that will last for years and has really good battery life, as I’m tired of constantly having to charge my current laptop.
Which MacBook would you recommend? 💻🤍

Any suggestions for buying a new mac? Want a good balance of processing balance and price.

I've only had my 2020 Macbook Air for 2-3 years (it was a gift to me) but it is painfully slow and has been for a while - honestly it's been slow ever since I got it - cleaning up my storage or any of the traditional steps have not worked. It has an Intel Core i3 processor, which apparently is severely outdated, which I wasn't surprised by given my experience with it. There are quite literally delays as I type this post out.

I'm in the process of doing research on the issue but would appreciate some extra help. I'm looking for something that:

1) Is priced less than $1,000
2) Can run everyday tasks smoothly with no issue
3) Can run basic games (like FM26 and future renditions) with minimal or limited issues. This point is far less important to me than the previous two.

I'd also like to know if there is a big enough difference between the M1, M1 Pro, or M2 to spend a little extra. Thanks!

Refurbished Macbook Air M1 as a travel device in 2026?

Basically as the title already suggests, I am searching for a travel device as I will be on a several month travel to Australia, and will afterwards start my job where I will be getting a work laptop, and I have a Mac Mini M4 at home for workload heavy tasks.

As soon as I'm back the Macbook would be 90% idle as I would only use it on short vacations up to two weeks or when I'm gone fore a weekend, that's why I don't want to spend so much on it.

My average usage case would be browsing, media consumption, from time to time coding (small scripts), and probably answering mails while abroad. The peak usage would be some type of small game (Factorio, Rimworld, Oxygen Not Included) but I would also be willing to use cloud gaming (Geforce Now) if that's not possible.

That's why I was wondering if that's a feasible solution to just buy a refurbished Macbook Air M1 8GB RAM 256GB Space (I could also buy an external Hard drive) with a fresh battery for 630€?

TLDR; Is a Macbook M1 still desirable as a ONLY! travel device in 2026?

I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but do Ethernet ports attachments exist?

I have a Macbook Pro and I do a lot If uploading to YouTube or upload to cloud storage, and a crap ton of downloading things. It’s been so long since I’ve used a Ethernet port that I forgot how awesome and fast they are until when I had to download some games on my PS5.

All we have is laptops (Mackbook Pro and a Neo) which of course doesn’t come with a Ethernet port. I know I can buy a portable disc drive attachment but do portable Ethernet attachments exist? Thank you!

MagSafe Cable dead internally — repair possible? Best replacement?

Hey everyone, my MagSafe cable (bought mac in May 2025) has completely stopped charging my MacBook. The cable looks brand new externally — no fraying, no damage anywhere — so it seems like an internal failure.

Confirmed through testing that both my adapter and my MacBook are perfectly fine. It's definitely the cable.

Called Apple Support — they confirmed it's out of warranty and won't replace for free.

My questions:

  1. Has anyone gotten Apple to repair or replace a MagSafe cable out of warranty? Worth pushing?
  2. Anyone else experienced a MagSafe failing internally with zero external damage? Feels like a manufacturing defect.
  3. Any downside to switching to USB-C charging permanently instead of replacing the MagSafe?
  4. What is the best option type c or magsafe for daily MacBook charging? (the non apple ones)

Thanks in advance!
