Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names
Hey everyone,
I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.
In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.
A few reminders:
* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.
* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.
* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

Discussion The new Googlebook preview is basically just a Mac for Android users
I thought this was interesting. The beginning of this video is him saying “we created a new OS from the ground up to redesign the desktop experience.” But all of these features are already on Macs. TL;DR they’ve just introduced continuity features and more to use your computer as an extension of your phone.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s smart marketing. If you have an Android phone, having a computer that plays nice is a major bonus. But none of this redesigns a desktop in an interesting way.
I think there should be more experimentation and innovation with desktops. Apple and Microsoft haven’t done that for a long time on the software side. But these don’t appear to be doing that.
Image i am so happy i got this macbook <3
i just switched from using my windows shitbox laptop for the last 5 years to this macbook air and holy shit this is the best purchase of the year for me. i was hesitant on upgrading my laptop because i already graduated and have a full time job and rarely use my personal laptop now, but this device is so beautiful and clean and thin and cold that it has actually motivated me to start building side projects again. also having an iphone and being able to copy things from my mac to my phone and vice versa without emailing myself is crazy to me, i can’t believe i have willingly been suffering bc i was staunchly against mac’s for so long
i usually am frugal but wow this has awakened something in me. i will never cheap out on items that have the power to motivate me to create again and increase my quality of life.

Discussion I Switched to Mac After 25 Years on Windows
Context
- Never had a Mac before and spent my whole life on Windows, from Windows 98 to Windows 11.
- Switched to a MacBook Pro M5 14’’ a few months ago.
What I like
- First impression. Setting up the computer for the first time was easy and fast. With my last Windows laptop, I had to go through several rounds of firmware and software updates with reboots.
- The terminal. It's Unix-based. All common Linux commands work. Ssh, scp, vim, etc. I really hate Windows PowerShell with its complicated commands. And it's supposed to be an upgrade over the regular Windows terminal…
- System Updates. I don’t fear them anymore. On Windows, I was always afraid a new update was going to break something. And Windows updates are mandatory; you can only briefly pause them, never turn them off.
- AI. I don't feel Siri is as much forced on me as Copilot was on Windows. It got everywhere. They're desperate to have you use it.
- Battery life. My previous Windows laptop was a Dell XPS that I bought specifically for battery life, sacrificing a lot of performance. Mac’s battery life is even better, with no performance sacrifice.
- Sound. Music and movies sound incredible. I never had a laptop sounding this good.
- Support. Quality of phone support is great. It’s also great to know I can walk into any physical Apple Store location if I have an issue. With Dell, once the warranty has passed, the (chat) support person had no motivation to help.
- Compatibility. Most coding and productivity apps I used on Windows have a Mac version.
- Window switching. It took some time to get used to, but I actually like that on Mac you use separate keyboard shortcuts to switch between apps (Command + Tab) and between different instances of the same app (Command + `)
- Privacy. I really got tired of constant new rumours on the different ways Windows is either already spying on you or intends to spy on you in the future, including taking constant screenshots of your desktop (they seem to have backtracked on that one)
- Preview. Preview of PDFs is really good, it avoids opening the heavy and bulky Adobe Acrobat app.
- Spotlight. My favourite way to launch any app. I love that there is a dedicated keyboard key for it.
What I don’t like
- No dedicated page up, page down, home, end, and ‘delete’ (not backspace) keys, which are quite handy to navigate inside a document. Instead I have to use combinations of several keys.
- Almost no native games on the app store, existing games have very few reviews.

Old Macs UM... WOW! (2008 mbp4,1, legendary find, to me)
CONFIRMED TO BE A 603/REVISION 2 NVIDIA GPU! (hooray! and disassembled in what may be a new record time of a combined ~15min)
I have never seen a green sticker board! What a legendary surprise! Zero pictures or mention in the original listing!
(For anybody who doesn't know/recall, it supposedly marks a board that was sent to apple and then repaired through their extended repair program, i.e. iirc a revision 2, 603 variant nvidia gpu should be on the board instead of the cursed original 602 variant — unsure if people fraudulently put these on macbooks only to... not... advertise the sticker... sneakily...
2008 GeForce Pre-Unibody I grabbed off eBay to daily use for a bit alongside my 2009 blackbook, for when I need something with a bit more power. Figured Id run it til the gpu dies then put on a 603 variant in (pretty sure that was the 2nd revision identifier middle numbers.

My Mac Second life for Macbook Pro 16" i9 2019 64GB 4TB
I have this MBP 2019 with a stonk of storage and RAM. Originally purchased for music composition with Logic Pro and sound library. That hobby had faded away for couple of years.
Any recommendation on what I can use it's second life considering I don't have other heavy use, other than a family photo album of 1.5TB sitting on an external SSD and occasion Claude / GPT use (co-work, project etc).
I do have 3 others M-chips Mac, so please keep the ditch-it-buy-Apple-silicon remarks to yourself.
My Mac Macbook air 2nd gen
2nd gen Macbook Air bought in 2010 is not charging and has not been in use for sometime. Location is India and I am not sure servicing is an option. Screen too is not looking good.
If it is not repairable, what is the best way to dispose it off.

My Mac Messed up today!
I popped off a key to clean because it was sticky and now i cannot place it back in. It snaps into place but there’s no pop up and stays stuck inside.
Doesn’t seem to be bent or any clips snapped??
I was very careful when removing it and got some tools on Amazon to help pry it off gently.
What should I do next? </3

Question How do I turn off the auto punctuation feature after the most recent update?
I use dictation almost every time I write something, because it's a lot faster for me than typing (because I'm not that good of a speller) but with the auto punctuation feature, it keeps on adding punctuation where I don't want it. because of my tendency to add a weird pauses mid sentence as I'm trying to think of what the next word should be (I am using it now, I can see that it's already doing it, and I'm leaving it unedited so you can see what it does to me)
This auto punctuation thing is really annoying because I don't want to have to go back into what I just dictated and have to edit it to get rid of those, unnecessary punctuations, but as you can see in the added picture here, I can't find where to turn it off in the settings.
So please, if anyone knows how to fix this and turn it off and make it more accessible for me, please help me.

Question MacBook Pro Wi-Fi randomly tanks to ~3 Mbps despite 1G fiber — band-hopping 6GHz↔2.4GHz, ruled out AWDL/Time Machine/iCloud, now suspecting driver/firmware issue
Spent days on this. Router is literally next to the Mac, 1G fiber plan, other Wi-Fi 6 clients on the same network consistently get 700+ Mbps. This one MacBook Pro periodically drops to 2.92 Mbps down/up while signal stays excellent the whole time.
Several AIs all pointed to AWDL, iCloud sync, or Time Machine backups as the likely cause. I eliminated all of them — fully disabled Handoff, AirDrop, AirPlay Receiver, Universal Control, iPhone Mirroring, and completely removed the Time Machine network backup destination. Problem persists.
During the slowdowns, wdutil info shows the Mac randomly hopping between 6GHz/160MHz and 2.4GHz/80MHz on the same SSID — RSSI and PHY rate always look perfect right before and after, no roaming/Wi-Fi faults ever logged by macOS. I ran sample against com.apple.DriverKit-AppleBCMWLAN during an active slowdown and found threads repeatedly blocked in AppleBCMWLANCommander::issueCommand → commandSleep, waiting on firmware responses — first caught waiting on AWDL sync commands, then (after disabling AWDL-dependent features) waiting on routine RSSI/diagnostics/power-stat polling instead. Same blocking mechanism, different command — just moved to the next thing in the queue.
At this point I'm fairly convinced it's a driver/firmware-level issue with how the WLAN chip responds to commands, not anything fixable via settings. Anyone else seeing this? Curious if it's model/chip-specific.

My Mac Maybe I'm not the biggest Apple fan, but wow, I owe them my life.
So, I soon started university and unfortunately had to move to another city, and well, I couldn't bring my PC and I found myself needing a laptop. I wanted a classic Windows one because it was cheaper and I was more used to them (and I could use my entire Steam library). But my sister, who's an Apple fan, convinced my parents to give me a MacBook Pro with an M1, and well, I've used that laptop almost every day since then for homework and watching TV shows, and of course, the situation arose where the charger cable died just when I had to do some homework. But it turns out that if I connect a USB-C cable to both the power adapter and the USB-C port, it still charges. I think this is the only computer that charges with two types of cables, and I'm incredibly grateful.

Question M4 Max vs. M5 Max
Saw an m4 max studio on sale for 2000 with base specs but 1tb storage. A similar build with the new M5max would be about 2900. Should I go with the older on sale model or take the hit on the new bit more expensive version?
