Can’t get this to thread

Post image

Sprinkler sheared off and looking to cap it, but can’t get a cap to thread on for the life of me. I’m sure it’s having a problem starting to thread based on how it was sheared off, just not sure how to fix it to get it to thread.

Gotta dig down further to where it Ts off. Unscrew the rest of the sheared off thread and replace

Dig it all the way up probably need to replace the nipple

You either have a piece of the close nipple broken off inside the female fitting and or the the thread is shot. Look inside closer. You may have to replace the fitting. Also that looks like a corner. By capping it there you will be creating a dead end, not good.

Yea wanted to cap it basically where the sprinkler was connected which wouldn’t create a dead end there. But looks like I’ll need to dig it up still to put a new fitting in and cap that.

If you are in a freeze zone, the dead end can freeze and split.

I’m in Southern California, so thankfully (or not depending on how this climate thing shakes out in 100 years, but that’s the next owner’s problem) no freezing risk here.

Thats because your docking it. Male threads dont screw to male threads. Remove the broken nipple from the sprinkler and the other half from the bottom of the hole, replace with a schedule 80 nipple or a swing joint.

Docking male to male is not at all what I am trying to do, so thanks for helping!!

You need to riser extractor to unscrew the broken piece and then replace the riser. You can cap the new riser or reinstall a sprinkler.

you need an easy out. you don’t need to dig or replace anything. you need to extract a threaded piece that you’ve already exposed
