Seeking Pro Advice How to temporarily disable this Hunter sprinkler
I believe i had a Hunter PGP Ultra 4" Rotor sprinkler. This zone has 4 sprinklers and I am looking at disabling temporarily (several years at least) as i have set up a garden bed and the sprinkler hits it directly. Location is Boston so cold weather. I will be winterizing my sprinklers in 2 weeks.
What do you suggest to disable that sprinkler? I read using a 3/4" expandable rubber winterization plug to put into the piece i removed (within the filter case and the white valve), thoughts?

Replace the head with a Hunter I-20 or Rainbird 5000 Plus, which can be manually shut off directly at the head. Just don’t forget to turn on when winterizing.

A riser and cap above grade is the easiest option. Idk why people are saying Hunter is too expensive, you could replace that head with a Hunter I-20 that you can manually turn on and off for $20

One guy claimed the i20 cost 75$! 😅

To be fair, that's pretty close to retail irrigation store prices if he's from Australia. 85 bucks for stainless riser i20, 65 for plastic pretty common here. Cheapest supply store around is generally 35 unless buying by the case

Cap the line leave it above ground a pinch just so it won’t get clipped by a mower

Replace the head with a Rainbird 5004. Then you can turn it on and off easily with a screwdriver.

This is the right answer unless you're never going to blowout your irrigation or this head is on a combo-t then you can just plug it

Do i just swap the top part of need to dig up the line and heavier manipulation?

It depends how its connected to the lateral. If you take a picture of the base of the head dug up we can better help.

The last picture is view of it from top. Let me dig up around to see how it looks like. Thank you?

Only works with the Rainbird 5000+. The Hunter ic-20 has the feature as well I believe. OP could purchase the ic20 and do an internal swap and shut it off without any digging.

Nope. Dig it out and install a 3/4” threaded plug into the fitting

I tried that but bottom of the tube (hard to reach) does not seem to be threaded

Dig it out and put a 3/4" threaded plug on the Fitting that feeds into the head.

You obviously didn’t try hard enough, and it has to be threaded. It’s a standard design. That head is attached to a three-quarter inch nipple of some sort. So you need either a threaded cap or a threaded plug. You could also use a riser if you want to access it later.

Replace it with a rainbird 5004 +pc
It has a internal shut off valve built into it.
Hunter makes one too but it’s like $75.
Where the rainbird is 20

Get a 3/4” nipple that is long enough to be above the grade, a threaded 3/4” coupler and a 3/4” threaded cap.
Dig the head out and install the cap+nipple assembly into the elbow the head is installed on. That way you can easily find it.
Or cap it at the elbow below ground and flag it. I prefer method one as flags can be disturbed or moved very easily.

I use a 3/4 threaded plug and then mark it. Or use a riser with a cap so you can see it.

Dig it up and cap the pipe going into the bottom...but you will have to take it off each year to property winterize it...so maybe stub it up to the surface

Not a pro but wouldn't just cutting and capping it off be better? Bleed the line first

If he cut the head off there wouldn’t be anything to run a cap off lol. The heads thread on.

u/JazzQquezz 1d ago
The laterals never have thread my guy. That's why he needs to bleed the line

The head should be thread to a 90° marlex in unison or a sbe elbow on funny pipe that runs to a T on the pvc or poly depending on what the system built with. You said cut the head lol. Laterals have threads at every cross connection that leads to a head.

Exactly it's a t... You can cut it off and continue the line to feed the rest of the heads unless Its the final sprinkler than it's jus lt a 90 with a thread. I've done this 100 of times to landscape construction simple fix

When said cut I took it as you meant literally cutting it lol. Being in this industry 12 years I’ve seen some shit man 😂. Your comment makes sense now. I’ve encountered an 1800 head cut in half and cemented onto a 1” pvc line man. Dude couldn’t fathom why it leaked

Brother I have a system I service where the original installers… poured concrete around every head. 💀. Thats some boon ass junk we see in the wild lmao. Bet that mp rotor can’t even fully pop up on that riser. Concrete and fiber optic guys regularly disrespect irrigation. I understand they have their job to do, they could atleast mark the area they cut the lines or glue a cap on and flag the area. Had concrete guys cut my lateral at a cross fitting, then backfill it with concrete chunks and broken 2x4s.

Damn only been doing it for about 4 months now... Can't fathom the stories I'll have once I hit the 10 year mark lol. Damn I bet they did it on a weekend as well... My boss just tells me to write a ticket but he isn't all mudy and wet

Unscrew it. Put a 18" riser in the ground keep it above grade and put a cap on the riser. If you bury something it'll be hard to find
