Use this thread to discuss whatever game you've been playing lately: old or new, AAA or indie, on any platform between Atari and XBox. Please don't just list off the games you're playing in your comment. Elaborate with your thoughts on the games and make it easier for other users to find what game you're talking about by putting the title in bold.

Also, please make sure to use spoiler tags if you're revealing anything about a game's plot that may significantly impact another player's experience who has not played the game yet, no matter how retro or recent the game is. You can find instructions on how to do so in the subreddit sidebar.

This thread is set to sort comments by 'new' on default.

Indie Sunday Dicevaders - Pengonauts - Just launched our dice roguelike set in the same universe as StarVaders!

Hey everyone!

If you haven't seen me around yet, I'm Axolotl (MedicalNote on reddit), and I'm the lead designer for StarVaders and Dicevaders. We're a three person-studio based in Montreal and StarVaders was our first game! Dicevaders is the team's second game, a spin-off.

This project started as a crazy dream of mine after launching StarVaders, which quickly became a little gamejam prototype that was way more fun than it had any right to be. It was originally based on the idea of "what if the boardgame SpaceBase was a roguelike", and then went from there to design itself.

Then I basically set out to create our take on the engine-building roguelike genre by infusing it with tactical synergy, deep scaling through perks, artifacts, and a strong focus on controlling randomness to your advantage.

Cannot thank you all enough for all your support for a little Canadian studio, it means the world to us!

The game is also available on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2 now!

I also wanna announce that StarVaders is offficially coming to Nintendo Switch systems and PS5 later this year as well! We are also working on mobile ports for both StarVaders and Dicevaders, more details will be revealed at a later date.

So far the reception has been phenomenal, the launch is going really great, by units sold it's actually already on pace to surpass StarVaders! (which is kinda crazy to me lol because StarVaders took like 5 times longer to make )

We're already planning a roadmap for post-release content, including new commanders, so stay tuned! At the same time we're starting work on our third game, a bigger, more ambitious project that will take the next few years to flesh out.

Thank you everyone who've followed us since StarVaders, helped playtest and give feedback, left reviews for our games! Feel free to ask me if you have any questions about the games or about gamedev in general!

Indie Sunday WalkScape - Not A Cult - I'm developing a MMO inspired by RuneScape where you progress by walking in real life. Trading is releasing next week!

Hello r/Games!

I've been developing WalkScape for almost 3 years now. We (Not a Cult, the company) have gone from just me as a solo dev to now having a team of five people in total and things are ramping up!

We're releasing Trading to WalkScape on next week's Wednesday (7th of October).

Screenshot 4: World Map

How to start playing

You can start playing the game immediately if you support us through our Patreon page. We currently have 20% and 60% Discounts on Patreon for your first month/year as a way to celebrate the release of Trading. More on the Discounts here.

The game is entirely community funded with no investors or publishers behind it. This way we can ensure that our players are always our #1 priority and the creative vision for this game isn't compromised.

If you don't feel like supporting the game or want to try it first for free, you can apply to the Closed Beta. We let new players in who have applied fairly regularly.

Info on how to apply for free access.

Introduction

3 years ago I was wondering of ways how I could motivate myself to walk more. I have ADHD, and sometimes find it hard to motivate myself to exercise. Thought about combining RS as I've been addicted to it for more than 10 years and walking, and that's how the game got started.

WalkScape is a game inspired by RuneScape and other MMOs but with a twist - you progress in it by walking in the real world! It's designed to be non-intrusive, with no predatory monetization practices. By non-intrusive we mean that it will truly let you enjoy your time outside by not constantly requiring your attention. Everything that needs active involvement (like combat or quests) should be done when you get home. The main goal of the game is to make people more interested in walking by giving them an amazing gaming experience to motivate them to keep walking. And you can play it while at work, or when you are walking with friends, and while walking your dog. You can truly focus on what you are doing and do more active playing later.

Discussion What's the most "out of place" difficulty you've seen in a game? Spoiler

The concept of a difficulty curve is probably familiar to everyone. Obviously a game doesn't need a linear line of increasing challenge, but safe to say that it's a generally accepted norm that challenge level should at least *trend* upwards as a game progresses.

Sometimes though, you run into situations in games where there's either an absolutely titanic spike in difficulty early on (often followed by the difficulty diving right back down again), or the opposite where an endgame encounter is bafflingly easy.

What are your favorite examples of this?

I guess we should lay a few ground rules. I think these are kinda obvious, but may as well write them up regardless:

  1. We're not talking about cases where the developers very clearly made something *intentionally* insanely easy. This is obviously a little subjective.
  2. We're not talking about very obvious cheese tactics that completely de-fang an encounter. Again, what counts as "cheese" or an exploit is a little subjective, but I trust you to be sensible about this.

I'll throw out a few examples that come to my mind:

**Dark Souls**:

Capra Demon is *brutal* for how early in the game the fight is. After a few playthroughs, it's not that tough of a fight, but every single person I know (myself included) got their colon stomped by the Capra first time around. It's not even really the boss itself that's so difficult, it's the fact that you fight him and two dogs inside what is effectively a shoebox.

As for the opposite, I'd actually throw in Pinwheel. I think it could be argued that he's intentionally a complete joke of a boss, but I don't know. I've also heard some people say he's meant to be an early game boss, but I don't buy that for a few reasons.

**Baldur's Gate 3**:

That fucking harpy fight next to the Emerald Grove. That could very reasonably be the third or even second fight you find after getting off the Nautiloid, and it's *hellish* that early on, especially on a first playthrough if you kinda don't know what you are doing (which described me on my first run). I think it's the singing - a few bad rolls and you are in serious trouble.

**The Witcher 3**:

I don't know if I'm alone in this - but that goddamn Basilisk fight with Ciri during one of the Baron's flashbacks is absolute murder. I'm not even exaggerating, that fight is harder for me than just about any fight other than the Toad Prince or whatever he's called.

In contrast, Imlerith I always thought was kinda easy.

**Kingdom Come Deliverance 2**:

The entire early game. Look, I get it, it's more of a simulator-ish type deal, but I maintain that when the very beginning is literally the hardest part of the game and then it just get's easier from there, something has gone wonky.

Anyways, gimme your examples

Indie Sunday Crown Me Again - The Code Otter - Diablo-style loot and build-crafting in a compact incremental RPG

Hi r/Games! I’m The Code Otter, the developer behind Crown Me Again. :)

I love the loot hunt and build-crafting in games like Diablo and Path of Exile. With Crown Me Again, I’m bringing that experience into a more compact incremental game.

You play as the fallen Skull King and you once were the most powerful dungeon boss of the kingdom. Now adventurers farm you for loot. So you start farming them back, using their gear to climb the Boss Ladder and reclaim Rank #1.

There are thousands of possible randomized items across seven item types and five rarities, including powerful uniques (with set items planned for after launch). You combine their abilities and effects, upgrade your gear and experiment with different builds. Sometimes you find a better item for your setup. Sometimes you find something you want to build a whole new setup around.

Trailer (YouTube)

Steam

Coming soon for Windows and macOS.

I’ve kept this short, but I’m happy to go into more detail in the comments. ASK AWAY!
