Aside from confirming the validity of this poster (properly vetted), the price has updated as of 3am EST to reflect the communication

Wait, USED consoles are gonna be around 1400??? wh

21

u/vJESSEv 7h ago

Chip shortages going wild plus this means they dont care about getting new systems now

5

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB 7h ago

But why do they mention used ones being more expensive?

10

u/vJESSEv 7h ago

To cut out questions from staff

8

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB 7h ago

Right but WHY are they more expensive?

The letter acknowledges it, but doesnt give any sort of answer

3

u/vJESSEv 7h ago

They have done this with used games before as well. They sell them for what they think they can and close out their new buying to focus on the more profitable used market that doesnt have map pricing

6

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB 7h ago

Ah, gotcha. So they already paid the "old" prices for a system and they are selling it at a higher markup.

But wouldn't people just buy a new system instead?

8

u/vJESSEv 7h ago

Because they are hard to find and gamestop wont be stocking many just the minimum required by sony to be a dealer.

Plus the new ones will be force bundled probably with accessories and anything they need to unload

3

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB 7h ago

Thanks for the clarification 👍

1

u/uniparalum 6h ago

Are they really that hard to find nationwide? I see them in grocery store electronic sections often and even at BestBuy, Target, Walmart, etc fairly often. Maybe just in my region they aren’t hard to find?

2

u/matusrules 7h ago

People want to buy older units for jailbreaks too, since it was just jailbroken

1

u/nutsack133 3h ago edited 3h ago

Because Sony isn't going to be making new PS5 Pro most likely so they're pricing at market value instead of relative to a fake MSRP.

1

u/logicblender1 1h ago edited 1h ago

People aren't giving the right answer in this thread. The real reason is because there was an exploit found in the PS5 that allowed people to jailbreak the console and get free games and download whatever they wanted and all sorts of other stuff. Sony patched that in the new software update so only PS5s with the older version can be jailbroken now. Therefore, the value of PS5s on the old software version is higher.

1

u/JayTL 7h ago edited 7h ago

Look at the versions that are this expensive. They’re more valuable and collectors items at this point.

At least that’s my assumption

Edit: for some reason I thought the Pro white edition was limited or different lmao. Disregard

5

u/tLM-tRRS-atBHB 7h ago

But the base models are still 1400 and 1500..... like damn. Do they think people are made of money? Who buys this garbage

1

u/JayTL 7h ago

I mean, look at the scalping industry. Scalpers charge this much because they sell for this much. It’s insane work.

And no this isn’t an endorsement.

0

u/Old_Man_in_Basic 6h ago

Have you seen what PS5 Pro's are going for? They're in short supply due to memory issues and scalpers have been buying them up at stores to flip for profit.

36

u/Iagut070 10h ago

Tomorrow ..... 10/16?

19

u/InstructionSenior346 10h ago

Was thinking the same thing! They might have meant to say 10/6 instead of 10/16.

5

u/rocketman19 9h ago

But they did it twice

3

u/InstructionSenior346 7h ago

Yeah? So? Just because it happened twice does not mean it’s not a mistake!

1

u/appa990 8h ago

That’s honestly not surprising

1

u/DuckSwimmer Mama Duck 8h ago

We also all know the type of people GameStop hires lol

9

u/sigmanaughty 10h ago

First thing I noticed as well. Tomorrow is 10/6 so there is a chance it is a typo, but still odd that it would go out to all stores like that

35

u/brock2344 10h ago

1,000 plus USED is insane.

31

u/EXEC_MELODIE 10h ago

used will cost more than new, this is intentional

Let me guess, because they dont have to follow msrp on used.

29

u/proficient2ndplacer 10h ago

That & new will be sold out pretty much permanently...

Not to defend them, but it only makes sense to sell it at market value when your local reflipper Raphael is buying them all up, new and used, and selling them for $1400 anyways

11

u/EXEC_MELODIE 10h ago

I would also expect them to open new stock they do get so they can sell at used prices. Wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened. Thinking back to the Xenoblade Chronicles Wii fiasco years back

3

u/InitialVarious1948 7h ago

Wow! Funny seeing someone else mention the xenoblade chronicles situation.

I’ve brought that up a few times over the years and people just called me a dumbass conspiracy theorist for believing it. I’ve never worked for GameStop but I 100% remember it happening and watching it unfold, thinking about how scummy that was. I’ve never seen someone else mention it until now.

1

u/rayquan36 34m ago

Oh it was 100% real and was strike 3 for me never shopping at Gamestop again.

-9

u/[deleted] 9h ago

[deleted]

8

u/Skyler_The_Player 9h ago

Didn’t stop them with Xenoblade on Wii back in the day

4

u/Middle_Floor650 9h ago

That’s not true. Gamestop was paying warehouses to print copies of hard to find games and marking them up to $150 and people bought them.

2

u/IanZee 9h ago

Curious what makes this illegal?

1

u/rayquan36 33m ago

It's not illegal it's just morally objectionable, like scalping.

5

u/Dog_Breath_Dragon 9h ago

They don’t have to follow msrp on new either

1

u/keypoet 4h ago

They don't follow MSRP on new already.

I swear the CEO just hosts meetings purely to discuss how to make people stop going to their stores. I think the people at my local Gamestop are about to drown in all the overpriced Pokémon they cant sell.

Man, obviously a single anecdote from someone's local GameStop is all you need to get the full picture. 😂

1

u/Connect_Young7180 9h ago

Physical games are going away and cards are a fad. McDonald's would die out too if meat and chicken disappeared.

2

u/Consistent-Yellow121 9h ago

What about old consoles, used consoles increasing in prices, new console cycle around the corner, increasing demand for PCs and cards? As if game CDs were the only way to possibly make money. They could partner with damn near anyone as a shipping point and drop off like PSA.

2

u/InitialVarious1948 7h ago

Physical games make up like 10% of their sales and the margins on new games are extremely small. I don’t know what GameStops profit is but a regional chain in the Midwest only makes 50 cents of profit on each new game sold.

People have been saying “that’s a fad” to everything GameStop has on the shelves. The statues. The funko pops. The other stupid collectibles. Now tcg.

They’ll just ride the wave until the fad is over and move onto the next trendy thing. GameStop has evolved the type of products they sell many times over the past 20+ years aside from video games. Up until recently they had very little debt with several billion in cases reserves which is unusual for a company, but it means they’re in a very good financial position. Also have to consider their investments which likely makes them a lot too.

-6

u/Character_Truth_3084 9h ago

Physical games and consoles make up the smallest percentage of Gamestop’s earnings, cards & collectibles make up the majority. The interest made on its cash/treasury bills & ebay position generate hundreds of millions per year also.

-5

u/InitialVarious1948 7h ago

This is reddit dude. Dont expect the dipshits here to have any actual business sense. They just want to circlejerk and complain.

Sure, GameStop has some scummy tactics. But what they’re doing has been working well. Hence why they keep pushing it further.

One thing I’ve learned on this app. If Redditors think a business decision will cause a company to crash and burn, you can guarantee the opposite will happen and it’ll be a success.

1

u/Alternative-Plum9378 Can recite r/GameStop’s sub’s description 7h ago

Ummm...
"The dipshits here" literally fucking WORK at GS (with a LOT of us being in management).
I know how to read a fucking P&L, dumbfuck.

Just like I warned our LP Director about card shrink and he (THE LP DIRECTOR) said, "Yeah. We don't care." BECAUSE of corporate's decision, we lost over $1000 in theft BECAUSE of THEIR decision. Not mine (who apparently doesn't have business sense).

So GTFO with your bullshit. We know what happens in our stores and how to mitigate loss... Corporate is LITERALLY incentivizing theft.

TL;DR: Fuck off, you judgmental, ignorant prick.

1

u/Gourmet_Chia Gamestop US 7h ago

correct, we like to circlejerk and complain. Unfortunately for you this is OUR sub so fuck off and suck on Cohens dick somewhere else.

-9

u/IanZee 9h ago

It's not the Sears model, at all.

GameStop is up 33% for the month, 22% for the year, and has a market cap of nearly $13 billion with almost $10 billion cash on hand.

I get that stores are getting hit hard and fast with changes, and morale is extremely low, but overall, GameStop associates are seemingly tolerating all these changes coming from corporate, since the stores are still staffed.

But from a financial perspective, this is a successful company, at least for the next few years. This aggressive focus on profitable stores, closing stores that aren't profitable, and being extremely agile with price adjustments in a turbulent market is apparently working just fine.

I don't get the premise that GameStop is scalping. Every single retailer sells things for more than they purchase them for. Hell, Walmart buys stuff for pennies from China and then sells them for dollars. So does Dollar Tree. Is that scalping? I don't see how selling PS5 Pro for what people are willing to pay is any different.

1

u/KingKibbleKrown 8h ago

Is tolerating the changes drinking more so I don't unalive myself because if so I am king of tolerating

1

u/Low-Solution1448 7h ago

1

u/Old_Man_in_Basic 6h ago

When I jokingly said "this isn't a game store anymore, it's a card/collector store that matches market prices" the employees laughed and said, "No bro, that's exactly what they tell us". It's my understanding that GameStop is actively teaching its employees that gamers aren't the real customers anymore, it's the FOMO card collecting shoppers.

They could probably care less if customers actually buy PS5 Pro's there. Those consoles have been OOS for months now. And I laughed when people said Sony's sales were going to tank after the price increase.

8

u/youdontknowme6 9h ago

I still have a 1st gen disc ps5 I barely play.

Anyone know what it's worth? Prices are all over the place and everyone seems to just want a pro.

I've had no issues with the console and barely played it tbh. Bought shortly after release.

3

u/kyogre1080 9h ago

gamestop was giving around ~300-330 store credit a week or two ago

u/Ashen_Larry 9h ago

I'm assuming its because PS5 Pros are out of stock everywhere and so they're charging what they want for the used since they don't have to compete with the MSRP of the new. Are these prices in USD?

1

u/xangbar Former Employee 2h ago

Pretty much. Pre-owned items are owned by GameStop so they can charge what they feel is fair pricing. It’s also higher profit margins for them compared to a new console(even before any price increase).

1

u/logicblender1 1h ago

It's actually because there was an exploit found in the PS5 that allowed people to jailbreak the console and get free games and download whatever they wanted and all sorts of other stuff. Sony patched that in the new software update so only PS5s with the older version can be jailbroken now. Therefore, the value of PS5s on the old software version is higher.

14

u/Sweet_Importance_284 10h ago

.....Something is off about this. It makes no sense to charge more for a pre-owned PS5 pros than the brand new ones.

Plus, the 10/16 date for tomorrow? Unless that was a typo. Best to wait for tomorrow to find out for real

6

u/monkey7420 9h ago

When they sell out of new ps5 when people are buying them for gta vi they think people will but them used for that much to play the game.

1

u/Sweet_Importance_284 9h ago

I asked my friend who is a store manager. She said it's real

2

u/the_andshrew 9h ago

Presumably they don't actually have any new consoles to sell, so they're only selling pre-owned and only at their new inflated prices.

2

u/Sweet_Importance_284 9h ago

Like I said to someone else. Something still feels off about it. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong. But that picture just screams "made in 10 minutes", especially with the text and white background that looks like it came from the late 90s/early 2000s Internet

2

u/DuckSwimmer Mama Duck 8h ago

This is through internal communications to employees. I’ve had people send me photos of them accessing MM on their phone (the picture you see here), I’ve also received POS pictures of the same thing. This is how GameStop shares their information internally.

0

u/Sweet_Importance_284 7h ago

Must have changed alot then since I last worked in 2018-2019, then. Still feels a bit weird overall.

1

u/DuckSwimmer Mama Duck 7h ago

They don’t use GSO anymore. They axed that years ago FYI.

1

u/birfday_party 8h ago

I mean fhays generally how information comes to retail we dont get like high production packets and information.

I mean the majority of planagrams i would receive were in black and white with a single photo requiring to place specific items at the top our store never would get.

Or checklists like this one with the most basic of informtion

Primarily because retail moves super rapidly depending on the store or type of store but generally you have to move this information quickly to 30+ stores in a district or more through the whole company. So less they type or spend time on it the faster it goes out

-2

u/Sweet_Importance_284 8h ago

Still feels weird, though. Guess we'll find out tomorrow. If I'm wrong, then I'm wrong, no biggie.

1

u/Single_Currency_3640 8h ago

Possibly Production of new consoles might be getting delayed or more shortages of parts causing even lower new consoles being made?

1

u/birfday_party 6h ago

Its true i mean i could also be wrong i havent worked in retail for like a decade but i did for like 15 years, especially stores with large amounts of varying items, you would often just get an exel sheet with a small description, sku number, sometimes but not often a location and then the current new price and the old price and then you would manually take a pricing gun and adjust ever item once you found it. Sometimes this happens in unison sometimes stores just specifically get them and not others. I didnt specifically work at gamestop either but every company i have worked for has had a similar system.

0

u/Sweet_Importance_284 6h ago

That's what makes it so weird. I did work for them on and off, I haven't worked for them since 2019 and this feels way off. More off than usual. If they're legit doing this like they did Pokemon, then there might be one...or two suckers dumb enough to fall for it.

But last I checked, the website itself didn't have ANY PS5 Pros to sell AT ALL! So if this is true, then good freaking luck getting anyone in there to even SELL a PS5 Pro.

This is legit 2020 all over again. I wish GTA 6 didn't exist now....because no matter which PS5 you play it on (Or Xbox Series), It's going to run the freaking same...

1

u/birfday_party 6h ago

I mean it is probably that, if they dont have any new ones then they are making way more off preowned ones and if the market for second hand is at a higher price then yeah i mean scalpers are gonna grab it and sell it higher so a business is going to take advantage of it if it can and gamestop can. I mean were in the post bankruptcy gamestop era they are more than likely not gonna wanna be anywhere near that position again and just in general the greed from all companys has gone through the roof lately so this doesnt surprise me as much as it should. But especially not gamestop i mean its a pawnshop with shareholders

1

u/Sweet_Importance_284 6h ago

Yea. Sadly, that's how you get Big Lots too. Before you ask, I was a former employee for them too....ended the way you think it did. Sooner or later, greed will bite hard...and destroy Gamestop, just like Bruce Thorn did with Big Lots.

1

u/logicblender1 1h ago edited 1h ago

I'm a little confused on something here, It says PS5 Pro's, but there's no such thing as a Physical PS5 Pro, all PS5 Pro's are digital with the option to slap the disc drive on them.

Is this for PS5's or just PS5 Pros?

3

u/Army0fSparta 9h ago

PS5 Pros. People can trade in their PS5 Pro with the disc drive attached (i.e. they bought it themselves and attached it in the past) and it’ll be a separate sellable SKU.

The increase isn't until Oct 16. There's still time, if you decide you want to upgrade before GTA VI.

Might save you a couple hundred to buy used off FB marketplace, though.

u/Casual-Caveman 8h ago

Nah. I'm good. Because the Pro model was originally $700 to $750.

Right now, it's still around $900. Another price hike is pretty crazy to me especially at $1400 and $1500.

Damn, being able to trade my pro into GameStop for more than what I paid 2 years ago is craaaaaaaazy.

u/Coleslaw1989 Former Employee 6h ago

Are they trying to do this in prep for gta 6? Since every store will be sold out of new pros

1

u/Bogart30 5h ago

All I’m hearing is $850 cash for a PS5 Pro. I’d make money back instantly

1

u/amans9191 5h ago

Holy fucking shit

1

u/HalcyonHeartbeat Promoted to Guest 4h ago

So you’re telling me I could trade in my console for more than I bought it for?

1

u/Sensitive_Shallot363 4h ago

Damn good thing i ordered one refurbished a few weeks ago w the disk drive was around like 990 after pro discount and 5$ monthly pro discount

1

u/F34RTEHR34PER 3h ago

Hmm, I might consider trading in my used one for $850 and stop trying to be scammed out of my sealed one for $850. Just to clarify, I was selling a sealed pro for $850 and I was getting "offers" from others wanting to do the transaction in shady ways.

1

u/Timmy__Cool 3h ago

And I'll never buy anything here again.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Chip869 3h ago

Remember when they exclusively got Xenoblade Chronicles on Wii which was super rare, so they opened a load of copies so that they were allowed to sell them as used with a big markup? I do.

1

u/Level-Commission-526 2h ago

This shit is wild. I'm glad I pulled the trigger when I did six months ago.

1

u/KungPaoYa 37m ago

Sure, why not? People will still gobble them up like the consuming pigs they are that can’t help themselves. 🤷 They will be $2,000 or even more at this rate during the holidays.

Everyone I knew was on my ass for getting a pro at launch after trading in my launch ps5. Paid $400 with the disk drive.

u/cat_lives_here Former Employee 5m ago

All this to try and capitalize on the GTA VI hype. I paid $650 for mine after coupons last year right before all the price increases when they had a good XSX trade promo going on. I paid a few hundred extra for the upgrade out of pocket and didn't really regret it, but even if I were in the market for a Pro I sure as hell wouldn't pay four figures for one especially when MSRP is $900. This whole company is borked at this point.

If I’m paying these prices for used, that mf better come SPOTLESS.

1

u/BlackTarTurd Senior Guest Advisor 6h ago

Nah, the prices are going up to provide for the family of roaches inside of it. The pro will also probably be banned from 2k.

I sell them used for $915 lol

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 10h ago

I own a regular PS5 and having only paid x amount of dollars for it, seeing these Pro prices blew my MF mind.

u/Split_Seconds 8h ago

The business behind this is that people wil trade in a shit ton to get a 1400 console.

That is worth more than buying it with cash to them.

0

u/H0ly_Cowboy 7h ago

SO price increase on the new ones soon afterward?

0

u/SlipperyThong 5h ago

So buy a PS5 Pro at Walmart for $650, then trade it in for $850?

1

u/Kou9992 Promoted to Guest 5h ago

How are you doing that when MSRP is $900 with no disc drive?

0

u/Jaydenrock 4h ago

Go to the mom and pop shops. Our store is selling PS5s at 479.99 with a disc drive.

1

u/Shargous 3h ago

Got mine for about $450 after tax from my local retro store. 😁

-2

u/mj732 8h ago

So for cash if we trade a ps5 pro in we get $800 dollars ???

3

u/Snoo30319 Employee 8h ago

No, that's the store credit amount you get for trade.

3

u/wiesga01 7h ago

Cash same as credit never happening again

1

u/BlackTarTurd Senior Guest Advisor 6h ago

Lol GameStop will never give you that much for cash. You'll get 650 cash, if you're lucky.

3

u/Fancy-Cow5223 9h ago

Nope

2

u/iwasbatman 7h ago

How do you know?

2

u/Fancy-Cow5223 6h ago

Bc this wasn’t from Eb games. Gamestop corporate is US

1

u/iwasbatman 6h ago

Is there a longer version of this document because I can't see any branding.

In fact I googled a bit and found that the used ps5 pro have the sku 416577 and in the screenshot it reads 416576.

I'm not sure this is legitimate. Do you have any reasons to be sure it's real and belongs to American Gamestop?

1

u/BlackTarTurd Senior Guest Advisor 6h ago

I work at GameStop in America, and we got this sent to us. It's American pricing, sadly

1

u/iwasbatman 4h ago

Shit. It's confirmed then.

Thanks for your input.

If you have SKUs, you can easily look up the associated product on GameStop's website. Go to any product page, change the numbers at the end where it says XXXXXX.html to your SKU, and hit enter.

So 416576 is a pre-owned PS5 Pro and 416577 is a refurbished PS5 Pro. You can put any of the SKUs from the document into the website and it takes you to the correct product. Even when you get an error on the page like with the Wolverine Adamantium SKU, the URL still changes to say "sony-playstation-5-disc-edition-pro-console---marvels-wolverine-adamantium-limited-edition"

Also the only "GameStop" that exists is GameStop US. GameStop US also owns EB Games Australia. EB Games Canada is an entirely different company.

Merry Christmas. Additionally, this poster has been properly vetted by the mods. The info they typically post is not rumors.
