This game costs ten bucks on a sale. If they want to push sales, just patch out Ronaldo.

It definitely influenced my decision to not buy it because I assumed it would be full of wack characters as dlc came out

Well fatal fury is definitely a franchise that needs to be revitalized so if it hurt a potential new audience, from a business perspective it was bad. Also counterpoint: are there people that bought the game because or Ronaldo starring in it?
