Expat-tutorial: Bicycles

As you may have noticed, bicycles is the most common form of short transportation. You see some expats making threads and questions on whether to rent/buy a bike, or where to buy it; or their bike being stolen.

This has a bearing on what bike you should choose. Because the theft of bikes is that prevalent you want to make sure that:

  • Your bike is worth less than surrounding bikes.
  • It is better locked than surrounding bikes.
  • You don't cry too much over the lost value.

A "nice" bicycle is a gone bicycle.

Renting (Swapfiets)

First out of the way: renting a bike.
You will probably get targeted advertisement by Swapfiets to rent it and it being "no-hassle" over repairs or something stolen.

This is simply not true, as the service indeed replaces it, but at your own dime, to the point it almost becomes a lucrative business model for them to have their swapfiets being damaged or stolen in your hands.
Next to that, it costs €20/month. Even in 1 year, that is €240. You can buy a lot of bicycle and repairs for that amount.

Buying

  1. Check marktplaats.nl and facebook marketplace first. €100 at maximum is a good target price to aim for.

Considering people in bigger cities are going through more bikes, and there being more demand, you'll likely be able to find them outside of Eindhoven as well.

If you have a student OV-subscription, consider looking around in smaller cities around and buying it there, and taking it back. Note that taking your bicycle on a train is €8,50. https://www.ns.nl/en/travel/on-the-train/bikes-on-the-train

Or consider the towns in bike-able distance (although could be questionable to you for it being far. But it's just a once-in-a-time thing), and cycle back on it.

Note: A foldable bike is allowed to be on the train for free. It's quite peculiar that a foldable bike can "technically" be foldable, but still take about as much space anyhow. This point makes foldable bikes significantly more expensive on the market than non-foldable ones. If you have to be at a different location often because you travel there, it is most advisable to put a very cheap 2nd bicycle in that location, or use the NS-bike for that day in that location, rather than keep on messing around with a foldable.

Note2: You are not allowed to take a non-foldable bike on the bus. Foldables are allowed.

  1. A second option is checking out the possibilities while thrifting. Check out https://allekringloopwinkels.nl/ for all thrift stores around.

Note: There is a chain that is called 'budget fietsenhuis' in Eindhoven. It's arguably...not very budget what you get for the price. Nothing really under €100, while that is the maximum price we are aiming for.

Locks:

It is more important that your lock LOOKS mostly imposing to steal, so it's not attempted. Sure lockpickers tell you it's easily taken, but it's not like people stealing your bike are busy with lockpicking. People stealing bikes, often cut the lock open, or bend it open.

Something with metal chains like this is fine.

This requires a portable angle grinder to cut open. That is quite noisy and cumbersome, so you'll not often find thieves doing that. They use simple pliers or bolt-cutters that are pocketable and rather silent.

Use it to chain it strategically to the solid world.

Other kinds of theft on bicycles:

Lights
If you have removable lights; wear them on your person if you can. They get nabbed all the time. Or have fixed non-removable lights.

Saddle
Easily removable stuff like saddles also get nabbed if you have a particularly "comfortable" new one without punctures, if it's toolless with a simple clip. If you do have toolless removable saddle, put a piece of ducktape on the saddle performatively so it does not look pristine (as if you have put it over a puncture).

Repairs

Flat tire

Your most common repair is flat tires. Albeit you can repair a tire, which is helpful if you are stranded somewhere and need to do it at that moment, you need this with you:

However when at home, I'd recommend to just put in a new inner tire. It's just easier and the chance of still having a leak after spending 30-45 minutes finding the leak, patching it and it still perhaps not closing up right...egh

To replace this, you still do need the repair set above simply for the so-called "spoons" to lift and place the outer tire back.

Note: I could not find a video that did it without removing the tire. I would advise against taking the entire wheel out, but, only removing the bolt on the side where there is not further connection. On the back-wheel, that means on the other side of the gear, and for the front wheel, on the other side of a disc-brake. In both cases, this is the left-hand side of the bike. Change the old tire in and out shuffling it through this opening by compliance and reattach the one single bolt.

For all your cheap bicycle needs, Action is a good source for stuff. If Action doesn't have it or is out of stock, Hema and Decathlon is your 2nd best bet. (Piazza centre Eindhoven).

Misaligned with steering wheel:

  1. Stand in front of your bike, with your 2 legs wedging the wheel.
  2. Wiggle the steering bar straight if it's misaligned.

Slight bend in the wheel
Usually caused by it being parked inside of a fork-parking method and then pushed over.
Put it in a fork-park and counterbend it.

If the wheel is wobbly all over

Economically it's fairly gone at that point. A new wheel is often as expensive as a whole new sub-€100 bicycle.

Weather

Dutch people just bike through rain and other weather. In particularly bad weather, they wear a "regenpak", which are trousers and a poncho they wear over their regular pants and jacket. Check out Hema and Decathlon (main city at the Piazza) for options.

For your bicycle saddle to keep dry; we use the grocery bag. We stuff that grocery back underneath in the back of the saddle, and take it out when necessary. Don't sit on the grocery bag itself, because the ink will transfer and stain you.

Safety

Do NOT look on your phone while riding your bike. Also not for maps or something. The fine is €170 and they are harsh in giving in out, since it's easy fines for them.

For your own safety, do not wear headphones or noise cancelling earbuds. You need sound to manage traffic safely by bike.

We’ve just launched the Eindhoven Photography Challenge and we’d love to see how people in r/eindhoven look at our city.

The idea is simple: show us Eindhoven through your eyes.

Architecture, people, nightlife, technology, nature, Strijp-S, a quiet street, something typically Eindhoven or just a small everyday moment that catches your attention, there’s no single right way to photograph the city.

You can submit one photo and entries are open until 18 October. You don’t have to be a member of Eindhoven Creative Community to participate.

The photos will be judged by a four-person jury:

  • Stan Kuipers – Eindhovenfluencer, vlogger and entrepreneur
  • Jan Timmer – Eindhoven photographer
  • Roy van der Wens – international photographer and videographer
  • Cas van Laar – portrait and documentary photographer

The public also gets a say: the final result consists of 60% jury voting and 40% public voting.

And of course, there are prizes. We’re very happy to have Cameranu Eindhoven and Hope’s Pizza supporting the challenge and providing prizes for the winners.

Balkan girlies

Hi allemaal,

Ik ben 24 jaar (meisje), en ben half Nederlands en half Montenegrijns/Servisch.

Ik sta graag open voor nieuwe contacten/vriendschappen en vroeg me af of er in (de regio) Eindhoven meerdere meiden zijn die ook een balkan afkomst hebben en het leuk zouden vinden om contacten te leggen. In mijn omgeving heb ik geen balkan vriendinnen, wat natuurlijk niet erg is, maar het lijkt mij leuk om een keer iemand te ontmoeten met een soortgelijke achtergrond.

Ter info: ik ben geboren en getogen in Nederland en ben dus niet nieuw in deze regio (!).

Schilder gezocht

Ik ben onlangs in een tijdelijke woning getrokken (ca. 2-4 jaar wonen is nog toegestaan). De muren zijn echter echt lelijk waardoor ik ze weer normaal wit wil hebben.

Helaas ben ik hier iets te lui voor geworden na alle aanpassingen die al zijn gedaan om de woning leefbaar te maken.

Gezien dat deze woning wordt gesloopt, zie ik het niet zitten om een nette schilder in te schakelen die premium verf aansmeert en de hoofdprijs zal vragen. Het hoeft er ook niet perfect bij te staan, maar wel beter dan hoe het er nu uit ziet.

Kent er iemand een klusser in de regio die ervoor open staat om 70m2 aan muren te schilderen?

Best areas when you have a car

I (28 F) am new in Eindhoven, currently looking for a place (studio or co-living) where I will be able to easily park each day and not be bothered to look 20 minutes for a spot.

Also I will be going regularly to Antwerpen and for work so would be more pratical to be in an area close to the highway.

Somebody drove into my car and left without a notice. Looking for eyewitnesses

Yesterday evening (1st of october) between 9.15 and 22.05 somebody crashes into my parked car at Elzentlaan. When I came back from an evening at parktheater I noticed that my left side of the car was damaged. Left side mirror is broken, scratches on the window and car. I'm going to call the companies in the street to see if they have cameras so I can use that as evidence for the police and the insurance company. But if somebody saw it happening that would also help.

I'm just very angry and sad, because this is a brand new car (just 1,5 month old) and its my first car. So if anybody saw or heard something. Please let me know.

Fatbike

Just happened after the DAF Museum bridge... 2 girls on a fatbike threw a stone right at my head and drove away laughing.... Immediately biked after them and told handhaving etc but they got away.

I hope I was the only person they got and I hope I will be the last as well.

Verzorgde bromfiets of snorfiets (geel of blauw kenteken) rond Eindhoven

Hi all, I'm looking to buy a clean, well-maintained moped or scooter, yellow or blue plate doesn't matter. I prefer a Tomos, but other brands are welcome too. I care about build quality more than looks: good brakes, decent tires, a solid frame and a tidy engine. Ideally a tuned version that reaches 50-75 km/h, but only if the build can handle it safely.

I'm looking within about 10-15 km of Eindhoven, or further if it can be delivered. I'm fair on price for an honest, well-built bike with a known history.

Casual boekenclub in Eindhoven zoekt nieuwe lezers 📚

Hoi allemaal!

Een tijdje geleden plaatsten ik hier een oproep omdat we op zoek waren naar een boekenclub in Eindhoven. Inmiddels zijn we zelf een mini-boekenclub gestart met vier personen tussen de 25 en 40 jaar, en dat bevalt tot nu toe erg goed.

We hebben inmiddels De vier windstreken van Hannah Kirsten en Nirwana van Tommy Wieringa gelezen.

Voor ons volgende boek gaan we De Nomade - Anya Niewierra lezen. We komen op dinsdagavond 27 oktober samen in het centrum van Eindhoven om het boek te bespreken.

Ben je beschikbaar op dinsdagavond 27 oktober en lijkt het je leuk om mee te lezen en aan te sluiten bij onze boekenclub? Stuur me dan gerust een berichtje met je naam, leeftijd en telefoonnummer! A friend of mine is hosting an online introductory session on breathing practices of Art of Living (Art of Breathing course happening in Eindhoven in November) , and I'm sharing it here in case it's useful to someone.

What it is: A 1-hour live session over Zoom that introduces a few basic breathing techniques and explains how they're practiced. It's aimed at beginners, so no prior experience is needed.

What you'll do:

  • Learn 1-2 breathing techniques and experience their impact on the state of mind
  • Practice them together, guided by the facilitator
  • Have time for questions

Details:

This is a paid event and I want to be upfront about that. But neither I nor my friend get any monetary benefit from it - It is a voluntary activity from our side.

24M / Rick -Zoek een festivalmaatje of groepje voor VWAB Indoor & Snakepit 2026! 🧡🐍

Hoi allemaal!

Mijn naam is rick, ik ben 24 jaar en een grote liefhebber van hardstyle, hardcore en uptempo.

De afgelopen tijd ben ik al naar meerdere festivals in mijn eentje geweest. Omdat ik vroeger gepest ben en autisme heb, vind ik het maken van nieuwe vriendschappen soms best wel lastig en spannend. Toch laat ik me daar niet door tegenhouden, want ik hou enorm van de feesten en de muziek!

Voor de komende twee edities zou het me supervet lijken om aan te sluiten bij een gezellig groepje, of samen te gaan met een festivalmaatje:

  1. Vroeger Was Alles Beter (VWAB Indoor)
    • 📅 Zaterdag 24 oktober 2026 (12:30 - 00:00)
    • 📍 Brabanthallen, 's-Hertogenbosch
  2. 10 Years of Snakepit
    • 📅 Zaterdag 07 november 2026 (13:00 - 23:00)
    • 📍 Klokgebouw, Eindhoven

Over mij & wat ik zoek:

  • Vertrekpunt: Ik reis bij beide feesten vanaf Eindhoven Centraal Station. Samen reizen vanuit Eindhoven zou dus al een hele leuke start zijn!
  • Groepsdynamiek: Het lijkt me heel fijn om met een vaste groep / een paar mensen te staan om samen te feesten. Omdat de locaties overzichtelijk zijn met maar 2-3 stages, is het heel makkelijk om bij elkaar te blijven. Ik vind het leuk om het merendeel van de tijd samen op te trekken, maar vind het ook prima als iedereen tussendoor af en toe even hun eigen plan trekt.
  • Vibe: Gewoon gezellig een praatje maken, genieten van de melodieën en beuken op de dikke kicks!

Ga jij/jullie naar één van deze feesten (of allebei) en is er nog plek voor een extra beuker in de groep? Of ben je ook alleen en wil je samenreizen/feesten?

Moving service

Does anyone know of any trusted moving services or man-with-a-van that can help me bring some furniture from one address in Eindhoven to another address in Eindhoven?

The addresses are just minutes drive apart but I'm all by myself and can't move the big items myself.
