Greyfriars Bobby was targeted by a vicious grave robber yesterday!!! Swipe for pictures of the suspect. (The owner was desperately trying to put the sticks back on the grave and his dog/thief kept picking them up until the man gave up and said “I’m sure he wont mind” and they both moved along)

Discussion Curious person on Royal Mile

We were walking down the royal mile today and a preacher shouted at us. He said

"Jesus was gay. Why else was he in a park with 12 men at 2am?"

He was wearing a dress and had brown hair. I'm undecided if this was someone who was on a substance or if it was part of a routine?

Did anyone bump into the same guy today and have any more backstory?

Discussion Airport investment

It's much maligned on this sub (for very good reason), but good to see Edinburgh Airport is finally going to get some serious investment in its facilities and experience over the next 5 years under a £500m plan.

https://corporate.edinburghairport.com/edinburgh-airport-announces-gbp500million-investment-plan

  • 60% increase to the terminal footprint
  • More stands and contact gates
  • Expanded Baggage reclaim facilities
  • New Plaza Development at the tram stop
  • New forecourt expansion and new entrances to the terminal as well as an expanded check-in area
  • Consolidated and significantly expanded Immigration Arrivals Hall (this bit will be most welcome)

From some of the renders it looks like there will be more use of space and height in the terminal, so hopefully it won't be so cramped and hemmed in with better space and light.

It all looks good.

Question How to make the most of maternity leave in Edinburgh?

I have a newborn baby (3 weeks corrected) and she is such a wonderful, easy, happy little baby. She had a rough start to life as she was extremely premature and spent the first 4 months (125 days) in the NICU.

Anyway, we have been home for 2 weeks and I am starting to wonder how best to utilise my maternity leave which ends mid August next year.

So far we have gone on short walks and stayed away from busy areas until she is fully vaccinated and her lungs mature a bit more. Kinda worried about the new COVID strain doing the rounds too.

Over the course of the year, what sort of places should I bring my baby? What events, classes, activities are on offer in Edinburgh? I am looking or a mix of free and paid things to do and also ways to make some new Mum friends hopefully.

Just curious about all the wonderful Mum and Baby things Edinburgh has to offer.

Question Child car seat donation

Post image
5 Upvotes

Is there somewhere easy for me to drop off a barely used car seat for donation? Or for someone to come collect it? Donation will need to be on Tuesday Oct 6th. I am on holiday from the US and had to get a car seat for my 5 year old, but I am unable to use it back in the US so we want to donate it.

Question Dog Kennels/Boarding

Hi All,

Does anyone have any recommendations on dog boarding/kennels? Me and my partner will be going away for a week in a few months time are are looking in advance for somewhere we could book our dog into whilst we are away. We had some friends lined up to housesit and look after the wee fella, but they've unfortunately had to drop out so we are looking at alternative options.

Anywhere within edinburgh or nearby really is fine as we can drive him over and pick him up when we get back.

Does anyone know of any shops in Edinburgh that have bikinis/swimsuits in stock? I’ve tried the St James centre but no joy. Left ordering online too late and need something for Tuesday.

Photo Pub on the Shore built a deck without council permission, now they have a petition to try to save it

This new pub (opened this summer) has put out this petition to convince the council to let them retain their deck. But it seems to me that they built it without first getting permission. "Recently, we faced a significant setback when our application to retain our newly constructed decking area at the front of our establishment was rejected by the council."

Shouldn't they have thought about this before spending the money to build a large deck?

Question Men’s Blonde Hair Colour

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to ask but I’m a guy with short hair looking for a barber or hairdresser to dye my hair blonde - all the ones I’ve talked to have seemed really really expensive (but they have been quite central). Maybe I’m wrong and there’s no other option but I wanted to ask to see if anyone knew of a great barber or hairdresser that could do it for a reasonable price? If that’s not a thing then please tell me! Thank you everyone!

Discussion Anyone else been subject to road rage from other drivers on Sir Harry Lauder Way?

I use Sir Harry Lauder Way quite often and noticed that since the 30mph speed limit has been introduced, I’ve had to deal with a number of drivers behaving very aggressively because I’m sticking to the 30mph speed limit and they still think it’s a 40mph.

Most of the time, they overtake me and beep as if I’m in the wrong. However, I’ve had two drivers roll down their windows to have an argument with me at the A1/Milton Road traffic light junction.

I reached out to Edinburgh City Council about this, but they are unable to put up additional signage due to legislation, because all drivers should know that street lights mean 30mph unless there are signs to say otherwise. I have reached out to my local councillor about this, who has also noticed similar behaviour.

Has anyone experienced this? Does anyone have any advice on what I should do next?

I’m just tired and terrified of having to deal with these road rage idiots because they seem to have forgotten The Highway Code exists.

Food and Drink Vietnamese baguettes?

A lot of great bakeries in Edinburgh but wondering if there's one that sells Vietnamese baguettes? Moved here from a place with a ton of Vietnamese bakeries and I'm missing their bread!

Event Looking for an artist from MNB Autumn Crafts Market today

Hi! I went to the autumn crafts market today at Leith and came across a stall selling really cool prints of warrior-like mystical characters the artist came up with. He drew them with water colour and colour pencils iirc. I couldn't buy anything at the time (card payment issues, my bad) but would like to support his work in the future. He's really talented!

I peeked at his business card and I vaguely remember the words "pigeon" and "talk" but I can't find him anywhere 😭😭💔

If anyone knows who I'm talking about would you mind sending me his details? He was at one of the stalls at the back, in the middle of the hall. Thanks a lot!

Food and Drink Large, fresh pancake rolls

Can anyone recommend a takeaway or restaurant that does homemade large pancake rolls, not frying the the tiny prepacked ones? Seems like my go-to place has given up on fresh, and I am suffering withdrawal symptoms.

We all know the decades-old tradition of placing a traffic cone on top of Glasgow’s Duke of Wellington statue - and frankly, that’s where it should stay. Over the past year or so, Edinburgh seems to have been trying to replicate the same kind of joke, as though it carries some of the same significance.

But the Glasgow one is funny precisely because it has become such an established, peculiar part of the city's identity. You can’t simply copy the same joke somewhere else and expect it to have the same effect. Putting a traffic cone on other statues, particularly war memorials, feels less like a tradition and more like an unimaginative imitation.

Personally, I find it not only unfunny but rather stupid - and, in the case of a war memorial, quite disrespectful.

Fuck you to whoever is doing this. Perhaps try climbing a little higher next time.

Discussion Gut health specialist in Edi?

I have had long term gut health issues and the NHS waitlist to see a specialist is years out. Can anyone recommend a good specialist or gastroenterologist?

Edit: yes, “years“ was a bit exaggerated; it is currently around 8 months
