i had gotten this now-20yo Dell XPS M1210 subnotebook for $50 a month ago, and stable Xfce Debian runs fine (albeit limited by its then-high-end hardware), and i did not expect it to handle actual basic web browsing. Debian deserves its slogan

Debian Stable vs. Testing Security

• Upvotes

I've been really curious since I tried installing Debian Testing and saw the security warning they give. After some research I figured out that security updates actually lag behind stable because it's a priority. Security updates then trickle down to testing kinda just whenever they get there.

I'm curious to know to anyone more knowledgeable and/or uses Testing; is it a significant enough difference to worry about?

I've always been a little paranoid about things like that and I don't really like the idea of having a system with security that is out of date. But on the other hand, I'd still like to be able to use a version of Debian with newer packages when the situation calls for it.

I would also like to be transparent in saying, I did ask an LLM whether it was significant or not and it said that it was and not worth the risk. I'm curious to hear what you all have to say about that because I see a lot of people online using it.

Edit: Ig I should've specified but I daily drive stable and still plan to regardless of what I find from this post. I just want to know in case I wanted to try something on a system I wouldn't be daily driving.

debian testing KDE

Updating my laptop (LXQT w/ labwc for wayland) and desktop (KDE) to testing and I'm running into a possible issue with my desktop. I update sources and ran update/upgrade but I have 662 packages that are not updating as per unmet dependencies. Can someone confirm that testing KDE is sitting with unmet dependencies or should I look at reloading my system? I ran both these systems with stable for a while then decided to update.

Thanks, ChCat

Debian Stable Question Anyone else think the default text editor in GNOME is garbage?

(Debian 13) If I put any large amounts of text in it goes so slow or crashes, I’ve started using KWrite instead and it’s a lot better. It kind of reminds me of Notepad++

In the process of trying to install later nvidia drivers (admittedly using Google AI BS) i was in the process of running dist-upgrade then this screen came up. Upon using ctrl+alt+f1 nothing happened. I just wanted at least higher than 550

Merci d’avance

Debian Stable Question Help needed fixing error while updating Debian

A little while ago, I installed the Brave browser through the command line and then I later uninstalled it. However, whenever I use sudo uptdate, it seems to try and still update Brave.

Here is the error message I'm getting. I did edit the https address and to ruin the link so this post doesn't get auto-removed by Reddit.
Warning: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. OpenPGP signature verification failed: hhttps://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com stable InRelease: Sub-process /usr/bin/sqv returned an error code (1), error message is: Error: Failed to parse keyring "/usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg" Caused by: 0: Reading "/usr/share/keyrings/brave-browser-archive-keyring.gpg": No such file or directory (os error 2) 1: No such file or directory (os error 2)

I tried re-installing Brave and then removing it and associated dependencies but it didn't seem to work. I apologize if this was answered elsewhere but I am kinda at a loss for what to do.

Debian Stable Question Nvidia driver 580 for Pascal

Post image
16 Upvotes

Good morning,

I'm trying to install Nvidia drivers on a GTX 1050, Pascal series, in Debian 13 Xfce. But the current version available in the repositories is driver 550, which gives me this error on temperature readings.

I understand the latest driver for this GPU is the 580 driver. Is there any way to install it without breaking Debian? Has anyone done it successfully?

The current driver does work, but I do worry about not being able to see the full GPU performance. I'm considering switching to Fedora, but again they have made 580 drivers a legacy package. I do prefer Debian thanks to its less maintenance overhead.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance. Sorry for the low quality image.

The system is a hybrid HP Pavilion 15 gaming laptop with Intel i5 10300H, Intel iGPU, Nvidia GTX 1050 and 8GB RAM

From Arch to Debian!

Post image
343 Upvotes

After 5-6 years of Arch (with KDE), I finally moved to Debian (with Xfce).

What I appreciated about Arch (and KDE):

  1. Rolling release: I could use the latest version of the kernel, Gradle (I'm an Android dev) and other tools where being on the latest version matters.

  2. Extensive Wiki and documentation: Arch wiki is just great.

  3. AUR: makes installing packages that aren't in the official repos easier, it's like a book of recipes, and it's literally got everything you could imagine.

  4. Customizability: this is where KDE excels, versatile and everything is configurable.

  5. KDE Connect: made my life easier all these years, thanks!

What I didn't like about Arch (and KDE):

  1. Rolling release (yes, again): not necessarily because it's bad, I just happen to live in a 3rd world country where internet is very limited and slow (how fuckin lucky for me I guess), so I would update once every 5-6 months and that breaks stuff, and sometimes you need to install a simple package, but because you haven't updated in a while, you need to update the repos, and then the package ends up forcing you to update the whole system anyway because of problems with partial updates and dependencies. Again, this is not on Arch, I blame this on geography.

  2. KDE is a bit heavy: compared to Xfce, and comes with a ton of preinstalled apps, many of them were actually useful, but I ended up going through the app list and debloating as if I was using Windows.

  3. The community: arch elitism is real, and it is a bit toxic, but it's tolerable when you've been using arch for a long time.

If you reached this point, thanks for reading! And I would appreciate a KDE Connect alternative that works with Xfce, I know you can set up KDE Connect on Xfce anyway but I don't wanna bring the whole Qt suite, I would rather have something light and GTK based. If you know a name drop it in the comments, thanks again! :)
