NOTE: My current hardware is at the very bottom of the post!
1. My Current Problem:
My computer is crashing a lot. I got an iBuyPower PC as a gift from my parents in 2021, which was a huge step up from my laptop. Fast forward to now, I've replaced the original storage, GPU, and PSU with upgraded components (around December 2023), and it has been exhibiting vague crashes in games and BSODs (access violations, crashes related to the gpu / nvidia, etc.).
I've done a lot of testing to try and fix this. First, I reinstalled the games, verified files, then ran MemTest86 with and without XMP enabled (both tests passed successfully), and finally reinstalled my OS on a new SSD. Nothing seemed to fix the issue.
It was only during MemTest86 that I noted that my CPU runs VERY hot now, as opposed to when I first got the system. It was maxing out at 100℃ during MemTest86, and also on some benchmark tests where I was stress testing the CPU / GPU (using OCCT).
I'm not certain about the CPU's cooling condition being the cause of it crashing in various games, but I definitely know that hitting 100℃ is not ideal in any scenario. My GPU may be at fault as I've received some crashes that tie to it, but I haven't done any testing with it yet. At this point, I don't use my desktop at all due to not wanting to damage the CPU by going past its acceptable limit.
2. What I'm Looking For:
I'm leaning further and further into building a new computer due to the age of my platform, but prices now are very scary for that.
At minimum, I want to get a new Case and CPU Cooler that I could maybe retrofit on my current CPU to see if stabilizing the temperatures fixes any of the issues, or if another of my components is to blame for the issues since I don't have another computer for testing my hardware.
Pushing it to the maximum, though, if my current setup is really that old and this seems like more of a headache than anything, I've been thinking of upgrading my current platform and preserving my GPU, PSU, and SSD for a new build. It would still require a new cooler and case regardless, though.
I would also be interested in swapping from Intel to AMD for the CPU; I don't really know if there are any substantial positives or negatives to using either side. I'm just looking to get the best value for my money.
3. The Specifics:
I live in the United States, and for a budget, I'll break it down into two categories:
- If I am just buying a new Cooler and Case, combined, I would like to keep it around $250-$300.
- If I am going for a whole new platform, cooler, and case, then I would have to think more about my budget. I think given the fact that I am trying to reuse my GPU, PSU, and SSD, my maximum is $1,500. I'm also unsure about whether or not I should wait until November for Black Friday / Cyber Monday or if there's never a "good" time to buy components.
The type of cases I'm looking for are just standard ATX kind of cases. I think building in small cases is cool, but given I have no experience building my own computer, I'm looking to keep it straightforward.
For cooling, I'm leaning more towards Air Cooling since AIOs are pretty expensive and seem to have a lot more points of failure compared to conventional fans, but I am open to hearing what options there are for that.
I'm not a AAA games kind of person really; I want to work on expanding my game library, but I don't play a lot of the heavy hitters that you would expect most people to play. The main games that I want to be able to play are Dead by Daylight, SCP: Secret Laboratory, RE8 and RE9, etc.
I also have a 165hz 1440p monitor with G-SYNC as my main monitor. I would like to be able to run games at 1440p around 120 FPS on above-average in-game settings.
I'm also not jumping the ship to Linux yet (as much as I probably should) and will be sticking with Windows 10 / 11 since I'm familiar with it and am also keeping my NVIDIA GPU.
Here are the specs of my current computer:
- MoBo: B560 DS3H AC-Y1
- CPU: Intel i7-11700F
- Uses a Deepcool fan of some variety; not an AIO
- GPU: GIGABYTE RTX 4070 Super
- I checked, and the GPU in particular is under warranty on Gigabyte's lookup page until October 2027
- I also own an MSI RTX 2060 that I can use for testing if needed
- RAM: 16gb DDR4 @ 3200 MHz
- PSU: Cooler Master MWE GOLD 850w V3
- Storage: Samsung 990 Pro (2TB), also a 3.5-inch HDD, but I would be willing to lose the hard drive if a case doesn't have room for one.
4. Ending
I apologize if there's anything I didn't cover adequately or if this post isn't suited for this subreddit in particular (I don't usually use Reddit). Any insight would be greatly appreciated since getting into hardware is very daunting.
