Simple Questions - October 04, 2026

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

  • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
  • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
  • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Discussion Is this the worst time to buy a gaming PC?

• Upvotes

For about a month now, I want to buy a gaming PC on Black Friday if there are good deals at Micro Center

But I see many of the PC community saying not to expect good sales because they will only continue and continue to rise

Want I want is a PC with RX 9060 XT and 16gb ram, $1,500 aprox at Micro Center

Should I last longer with my PS5 and Steam Deck?

Discussion 64 GB vs 32 GB RAM price inconsistency, 64 GB is cheaper?

I am currently shopping for a RAM kit, and have come across the following two kits from the same manufacturer:

540$ - 32GB (2x16GB) 5600MT/s DDR5 CL36

400$ - 64GB (2x32GB) 5600MT/s DDR5 CL36

Am i missing something? Am i stupid? Why is the 64gb cheaper? I'm new to building and i think i am missing something

EDIT: For those of you asking for the link, let me try to buy it first, and then i'll send you the link, I wouldn't want you guys to take all the stock lol

EDIT: I got got, the product becomes suddenly unavailable when checking out. It's weird because on the product page there is stock available... got my hopes up for nothing.

Build Upgrade Ryzen 5060ti vs Ryzen 5070

• Upvotes

Hello. I was was planning to buy a GPU for my PC. Currently I am running the ff set up.

  1. Ryzen 7 5700g

  2. Prime B550M-K ARGB

  3. 16gb ddr4 lexar thor

  4. 500W Silverstone

I am budget constrained so I was debating whether to get an RTX 5060ti or a 5070. I was told that I will need a new PSU if I get the 5070 but that's well within my budget.

So which is better for my set up? 5060ti or 5070?

Thanks!

Build Help $500 'Gaming' PC for Minecraft for my son

Hello everyone,

My wife and I are getting divorced, and I'm looking for an activity my son and I can share even when he's not staying with me. He loves Minecraft, and he asked if we could play together online.

However, I'm on a tight budget and was wondering if a $500 gaming PC is realistic for this. He wants to use mods and texture packs. Years ago, texture packs caused major frame drops for me, but I didn't have a good PC back then and I've never built one myself.

Is $500 enough to run modded Minecraft smoothly today?

I don't know if buying used parts is a good idea or what tricks would make it cheaper.

Build Ready? Micro Center build check: $3,595 all-in. What would you change?

I’m planning to purchase a gaming PC through Micro Center and having them assemble it. Looking for feedback on compatibility, value, and where to reduce costs.

My monitor is an ASUS ROG PG279Q, running at 1440p/144 Hz. It has an older Nvidia-only G-SYNC implementation and does not support AMD FreeSync, so switching to the RX 9070 XT would mean losing variable refresh rate on this screen. Keeping G-SYNC was part of my reason for choosing Nvidia, but I’m questioning whether it’s worth the extra $320. Would you pay that premium or take the savings?

Part Selection Price
GPU Gigabyte RTX 5070 Ti Windforce SFF OC 16 GB $1,099.99
CPU Ryzen 7 9850X3D $449.99
Motherboard MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi $209.99
RAM G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2×16), DDR5-6000 CL32 $499.99
SSD Lexar NM790 2 TB $329.99
PSU Corsair RM850x 850W, ATX 3.1 $124.99
Cooler be quiet! Pure Rock Pro 3 $64.99
Case Lian Li LANCOOL 217, non-RGB $139.99
Windows Windows 11 Home retail $139.99
Assembly Micro Center Express ProBuild $249.99
Estimated tax 8.625% $285.48
Total $3,595.38

Alternatives I’m considering:

  • $919.99 bundle: Same 9850X3D, ASUS TUF B850-E WiFi, and 32 GB Flare X5 DDR5-6000 CL36. Saves $239.98 before tax versus buying my selected CPU, motherboard, and RAM separately.
  • $779.99 PowerColor RX 9070 XT Reaper: Replaces the 5070 Ti and saves $320 before tax, but I would lose G-SYNC on my current monitor.
Changes Total including Windows, assembly, and estimated tax
Bundle only $3,334.70
Radeon only $3,247.78
Both $2,987.10

Both changes save $608.28 including tax.

Would you make those substitutions? Is Nvidia worth the extra $320 considering my monitor, and are there any other overpriced parts or compatibility issues I should address?

I don't love the price, seems insane to me, but I also haven't purchased a new PC in 8+ years. Is this just the new normal or is my build a little over the top?

Thanks for the help!

Discussion Used laptop or cheap mini PC

• Upvotes

I’m wondering what gets you the most power for your buck. A used laptop or a mini pc with a portable screen?

Not looking to be played crazy games on it, basically just generic games, but be able to editing run programs even if it’s somewhat slow.

The fact that I’ll likely have to be plugged in all the time doesn’t matter as long as it’s super easy to pick up and move elsewhere.

Build Help What's the best PC I can get for £900-950? UK, 1440p gaming + remote work, targeting Black Friday. I don't really know what I'm doing, so all suggestions welcome

About me:
I'm new to PC building and honestly don't really know what I'm doing, so I'd really appreciate honest feedback. I'm in the UK and I'm targeting Black Friday (27 Nov) to buy.
What I need it for:
Remote work every day
Gaming at 1440p/60fps, including Red Dead Redemption 2 and FIFA / EA FC, and I want it able to run something as demanding as GTA 6 when it comes to PC (I'll play it on Xbox first)
Upgradable later, so I'm not cutting corners on the parts that are hard to change
Budget: £900 ideally, £950 max. I want to get the most performance I can for that money. I already have a monitor and peripherals. No RGB needed.

My attempt: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/b7Zxxf
It's an RX 9060 XT 16GB, Ryzen 5 7600, 750W Gold PSU, 16GB DDR5 and a 1TB NVMe SSD. It comes to about £1,179 right now, mostly because 16GB of DDR5 is £254, so it's over budget. I'm hoping some prices drop on Black Friday.
My plan:
Don't cut corners on the CPU, GPU or PSU
Start with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD, then add more later (hence the 4 RAM slots and spare M.2 slot)
Upgrade the GPU later if GTA 6 turns out heavier on PC
What I'd like help with:
•What's the best build you can put together for £900-950? If you have one that beats mine for the same money, please share it. I'm happy to scrap mine.
•Is it worth waiting for RAM prices to drop, or should I go DDR4/AM4 to save money?
•Is the 9060 XT 16GB the right GPU at this budget?
•Are there any corners you think I should cut instead? Some of the ones I've picked (like the cheap case, 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD) might be the wrong ones, and I'd rather save money somewhere else if that's smarter.

•Anything I've missed or should swap?

Thanks so much for reading and in advance!!!

Peripherals APC Back-UPS 1500 is very hot. Why?

Google-fu says there's no ideal subreddit for consumer grade UPSs...

Anyway, my dad's 2 year old APC Back-UPS 1500 is very hot. There's only one mid-range desktop PC and an LCD monitor connected to it. Utility power is good. The PC has been idling for days, no load, monitor was off.

Why is the UPS hot to the touch? I assume that's not ideal for their power bill...?

Discussion Are rgb softwares dangerous ?

I recently got a new pc and installed singlal rgb , tried openrgb but it didn’t detect my things probably . I recently saw and learnt that such software ( even openrgb) can kill your ram or fans or other hardware in pc .? should I just uninstall external software and reinstall Asus armour crate or just forgot all the software and let my pc run its own default rgb .

Discussion Should I swap my 5060 for a 9060xt?

Got a 5060 for my wife's future pc in January for 300$
Market going crazy and they're now selling for 500+ USD

I can sell it (still new in the box) and get myself 9060xt 8/16 gig depending on availability and still save some cash for a case and/or psu.

This seems like a good idea for me, but I'm still hesitating.
The purpose is light gaming, nothing crazy, she won't use geforce experience (which is a selling point for me, I hate OBS recording) so I'm really considering it. What are your thoughts?

Build Upgrade Should i upgrade my current processor (i5-8600K) to a Ryzen 7 5800x3D?

I want to upgrade my pc but ram prices are insane.

Was thinking of upgrading to the best ryzen processor that supports DDR4 ram so I can still maintain a good upgrade over my current processor. Have a solid GPU (4070 12 GB) but need a new motherboard and ram, just wondering if it’s a good idea before I do so. Thanks!

Troubleshooting RMA Issues with PB Tech Australia

• Upvotes

Seeing if anyone has any ideas for an RMA Issue with PBtech. I bought a MPG 322urx OLED Monitor off their Australian website. Two weeks later doesn't power up and makes a clicking noise. Try different power, DP and HDMI Cables on difference PC's and a laptop. Nothing.

RMA it back to PB tech. Weeks of international post, receipt, sending away to for tech assessment later I get an email saying, tested it, all fine, sending it back to you.

I have no idea how they even got it to turn on, let alone test it and clear it as fine....

Latest is I've emailed to say I won't accept it's return as the damn thing doesn't work. Any ideas for next steps?

Build Help Do I need 32gb of ram or should I just take 24gb?

First of all this is my first build and I will use my pc for editing but mainly gaming.

So I would have just bought a 2 corsaire vengeance 16gb ddr4 for 200$ but then my friend told me that he had a PNY XLR8 RGB 8GB with him and he could sell it to me for just 40$ which would make me save 60$(its not really saving if I am losing 8gb of ram but again my question if I'll need 32gb of ram to begin with.)

Now,lets say I dont actually need 32gb of ram,is mixing 2 different marks of ram a wise choice? They're both the same speed and pcpartpicker doesnt have any problems with it but I need a second opinion.

Build Upgrade Need an upgrade for external space

• Upvotes

Btw I no nothing bout computers never been my interest I judt like what it can do for me

Ive been gaming with an external hard drive attached to my pc for awhile mainly(gift from family qhen I was younger) but recently its been buggy and now has finally kicked the bucket most of my main games are on it and I dont really have the space to redownload all of em onto my ssd since I also have all my work and other things that I need to be secure on it so its a no go on internal.

BEFORE ANY1 STARTS TELLING OH NO DONT USE EXTERNAL ITS A HORRIBLE CHOICE OVER INTERNAL BLAH BLAH BLAH ik that but my prebuilt that was gifted to me is only single slotted and I already upgraded it to 930gb or smth like that, and I still lack space so im in need of an hdd or I heard that I can get a internal and convert that into a external somehow so my thing

So my question what external hard drive will benefit me and last till im able to upgrade or if I can do that external drive stuff what should I look for and what components will I need

Troubleshooting Black Screen and no signal when I game

• Upvotes

Just got a new game for my pc, Star Wars Zero Company. I'm running with a Ryzen 7 3800X and a RTX Geforce 3070 ti.

The game mostly runs good, but in certain, cinematic heavy areas and the hub, I hear the fans getting loud and eventually the whole things hits a black screen and reads as no signal on my monitor.

I've cleared most of the Dust from the fans and tried to pull it out more. It utilizes a Liquid cooler and the only game to cause this same thing is Quarantine Zone.

Would love to get help with this.
