Community Meta r/YouTubeGaming community rules — an Explainer & Roundtable Discussion

Good morning!

As there has been a recent spate of users coming to us in modmail confused as to why their submissions have been removed, I though it would be appropriate to write up a little explainer regarding the details and the origins of the rules of the community; as well as to open up a roundtable discussion regarding the rules if anyone would like to offer any public feedback, or discuss any potential changes publicly.

There will not be any action taken against any users offering genuine feedback in this thread — except for if the feedback is an obviously egregious Rule 4 violation.

----

Rule 1: No promotion, uploaded videos, or non-newsworthy YouTube links

I mean, does this one really need to be explained much more? Without this most basic rule, the community here would be a massive stinking link dump from people desperate for views and validation.

The emphasis on "non-newsworthy" YouTube links is because there is still a scope for sharing videos discussing updates to the YouTube platform; to creator guides with tips and tricks for recording, editing, thumbnail creation, title curation, etc.; or to videos with useful content for all creators, such as the recent Tom Scott WIRED interview, where he answers a ton of questions about being a creator far better than any of us can.

This rule also applies to comments, so attempting to respond to someone else's post by shilling non-newsworthy content will also result in Rule 1 violation removals.

Reddit-uploaded videos had to be added to this rule as some users tried to skirt the link ban, by instead uploading their content directly to Reddit and adding their channel name in the post/comment to encourage you to go there afterwards.

Rule 2: Conversation should be about YouTube as a gaming video platform

The community here was made primarily for us gaming YouTube creators to discuss the YouTube platform and its workings; as well as for viewers of gaming videos to discuss the UI and any problems. After Rule 1, this is probably the rule that results in the most removals. I'll discuss in more detail some examples of items that get removed under this rule:

"I don't know what games to play"

No-one here can answer that for you. Only you know what games you enjoy and would therefore make good content for your channel. Trying to force yourself to play something you don't enjoy, just because it is popular and might gain views, will be clear to the end viewer.

Besides, all you need to do is use the genre search on Steam, Microsoft Store, PlayStation store etc. to get some great recommendations.

"How do I get more views/subscribers?"

Let me be blunt. If we knew the answer to this question, we wouldn't be here discussing it with you. Audiences and the algorithm are finnicky bitches, and they work in mysterious ways that no-one here can reliably predict.

"Why don't my Shorts get views?"

The Shorts feed is even more volatile than a normal audience. The Shorts algorithm attempts to cycle every piece of content uploaded through the feed at least once, but with the absolute glut of Shorts uploaded, getting around to it can often take quite a lot of time.

Additionally, you need to consider that the long-form audience and the Shorts audience are for the most part a Venn diagram of two completely separate circles. There is very little if any overlap between them.

"Am I shadowbanned?"

No, you're just impatient and expecting instant gratification. Uploading to YouTube is not just pressing a button and magically getting millions of views and subscribers.

"I want new channel recommendations"

This isn't discussing the platform for the benefit of gaming YouTubers. This is just you looking for new content. The YouTube algorithm is generally good at trying to surface newer channels/videos in your recommendations, so make use of that area.

Additionally, posts like this get removed because it just results in other users then trying to promote themselves in the comments, in violation of Rule 1.

"Help me find this particular video/creator"

This isn't tipofmyyoutube, and again does not discuss the platform for the benefit of gaming YouTubers.

Rule 3: The feedback rule

This rule had to be implemented because far too many users tried to skirt around Rule 1 by just adding something like "feedback request" or "how's my editing" to their link dump. It became far too tiresome to moderate, so it was decided to outlaw them entirely.

Another concern is that too many people try to post their entire video and request a spectrum that is far too broad such as "the editing" across the entire video. Feedback requests only work if the area being requested is focused on one particular aspect, such as a specific transition, zoom, music sync beat, etc.

We are considering re-allowing feedback requests via Reddit-uploaded images and video clips, however these will be very tightly moderated — to the point of possibly being approval-only — and clips will be restricted to snippets under one minute.

Rule 4: Remember the human

Unfortunately, this is the internet so this has to be explicitly defined. Don't be a dick to other users. It's fine to have different opinions, but respect those opinions and do not go attacking the other user for it.

This was definitely put to the test on several occasions in the recent AI thumbnail thread, where a fair few users went off the boil for someone daring to post an opinion they disagreed with...

Rule 5: No actions that are against the YouTube Terms of Service

I mean, this should be obvious. If we as gaming YouTubers want to remain on the platform, we need to follow the Terms of Service.

Rules 6 & 7: Services and Collaborations

These rules were originally implemented as service/collab posts effectively became just as spammy as link dumps and bad feedback requests.

Service posts have way too many people these days offering editing services, and all they end up doing is running the clips through some AI compilation software. On top of that, some people tried to showcase their portfolio which was basically just link dumping their own channel — which also violated Rule 1.

Collab posts aren't really discussing the YouTube platform, and also end up mostly just being thinly veiled promotion dumps.

Rule 8: Polls must use native Reddit polls, or Google Forms

Anonymous polling sites were the bastion of low-effort polls many years ago, in addition to being easily brigaded and influenced. Since then native Reddit polls have become more feature-rich, particularly with the option to show the votes from "core contributors" of a community.

----

If you wish to offer feedback on any of the rules, please ensure that you make it clear which rule number(s) you are talking about. Also do consider how easily enforceable any particular changes are — a suggestion may sound simple on paper, but prove to be incredibly hard to put into action with the limitations of the Reddit platform!

Question Does posting more than one game harm a channel?

I post F1 game shorts and some longform videos, but I’ve been playing a lot of Nascar lately and was wondering if posting shorts of both would harm my channels algorithm and audience. I have a humble 228 subs but I don’t want to stunt my growth and my F1 base is decent. Are there channels that do these things, like COD and Battlefield or NBA2k and Madden? Or am I stupid for thinking about posting both?

Question I run a channel that showcases high end video game graphics - How do I build a community?

I’ve been posting for 10 days and have had a surprising amount of traction with the channel. Around 30k views across all videos. Only around 20 subs.

How do I build an actual community if the videos are no commentary?

Should I start out my videos with a 3 - 4 second greeting just so they know there’s a real person behind the showcases?

Question How do you recommend handling Youtube Streams and VODs?

I just started streaming, on Twitch and more importantly, on Youtube. And the thing is, a large part of my audience (I have 2.2K subs) isn't interested in the streams it seems (which is fine). So, I don't want to annoy those who aren't interested in the streams with constant notifications of the stream/stream VOD and make a cluttered youtube page for those who don't care about the streams (I do think my VODs only show on the Live page, my main page is just the videos).
At the same time though, the VODs are monetized, so even if it's a small portion that watches them after the stream, I don't want to lose that extra monetization, even if it's a little.
I'm streaming 3 times a week and the streams are related to my main topic (I mostly make videos about the game Silksong, the streams are the game Silksong).

What would you recommend? Does anyone have experience/knowledge with subscribers being annoyed by stream related notifications?
Thanks in advance :D

Question Need tips on my Channel

Hey! Been doing non-commentary horror gameplay for awhile now and I honestly want some tips. I try to make my videos as immersive as possible like focusing on the narrative or what the game is conveying in their story and not miss important details. No shaky camera, running around aimlessly or rushing towards the end of the game. My videos for Vile: Exhumed, Signalis or Luto are some of my higher performing videos. But now, my videos start to dwindle and I am starting to get discouraged as time goes on. One thing to point out is that whenever there is a new game out, I do not upload as fast as other channels because of the nature of my videos which takes time to make. I just want some tips on what I can improve.

Question I used to post sports content

So I used to post NBA content and it was doing very well anywhere from 500 to 1000 views along with AAA games. I didn't wanna post NBA content anymore so I unlisted them all and just left my let's plays up. I'm thinking about going back to my NBA content along with my let's plays. Is that a good idea or should I just stick to my let's plays.

Question Hi yall, new channel. Is it normal that my minecraft content attracts tv kids? Details below

Post image
0 Upvotes

Context: i'm 20 and i make content for everyone (they are not hyper edited mr beast styled videos but not overly gen z alpha-ish either) so it makes sense why younger kids would click them, but I was wondering why such a high % of my audience are on tv.

If you have a similar niche can you tell me if this happens to you as well?

As you can see here, most of my videos are kids watching on tv using their parents accounts (age 25 to 44 mostly)

Normally on long form uploads I see up to 60-70% tv

Shorts are lower but they are still at 40-50%.

My most popular short has 60% on tv too for some reason.

Looking for advice on starting a Spanish Roblox channel with a low-end PC

Hi everyone. I'm looking for advice from people who have experience creating Roblox content.

I want to clarify from the beginning that all of the channel's content will be entirely in Spanish, primarily targeting a Spanish-speaking audience.

I’m from a country where the job market is currently pretty difficult, especially for young people. I also have some health issues, including heart problems and anxiety, which make physically demanding jobs and highly stressful work environments difficult for me.

Because of this, I've been considering getting into content creation. I've always enjoyed video games, but I have one major problem: my PC is pretty limited and can't run and record most games at the same time.

I've tried several games, and basically, Roblox is the only one that runs smoothly while I'm recording. Fortunately, I genuinely enjoy games like Rivals and 99 Nights in the Forest, so I'm considering starting by creating Spanish-language Roblox content and using it as a way to eventually afford a better PC and expand into other games.

My short-term goal would be to make around $300 from content creation. $300 might not sound like much, but where I live, that amount would make a significant difference for me and would allow me to improve my equipment.

I know Roblox is an extremely saturated niche, especially on YouTube, and that's exactly what concerns me the most.

If you had to start a Roblox channel completely in Spanish today, using a low-end PC, with practically no budget, and with the eventual goal of monetizing it, what would you do?

I’d especially like to hear about your experiences or advice regarding:

  • Choosing games and topics
  • Video ideas
  • Thumbnails and titles
  • How to stand out in such a saturated niche
  • Getting your first few thousand views
  • Reaching a Spanish-speaking audience
  • Realistic expectations for reaching monetization

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

YTG Bug Stream playback is 30fps despite being streamed at 60fps

2 recordings of streams i've done now on youtube have been saved at 30fps, despite my OBS settings being all in order for it to be 60. No settings were changed and even just recently they'd be saved at 60fps just fine, it's completely out of the blue.

While live the stream WAS 60fps. The playaback was still 60 a few minutes after going offline, i checked. But after a few hours being up it went down to 30fps. And not in the typical way that it takes a while to process a video on YT and it stays at a reduced quality. It's already been 6 days since said stream and it remains at 30, that should have been more than enough time to process it. I doubt they'll change to 60 at this point, and i don't want to stream anything else until i can fix this.

Discussion A mesage to youtubers covering Hellraiser Revival

The game has explicit nudity and sexual scenes and there won't be any in-game censor option.

Protect your channel:

Blur or cut nudity and sexual scenes before uploading

Use Trim & cut or Blur in YouTube Studio's editor to clean up the video

Set the video to age-restricted (18+) in upload settings. Never use frames from those scenes in thumbnails or Shorts

Reviewers: you can talk about the mature scenes, just blur or skip them in your footage

Hey Everyone,

We should be treating this Youtube stuff like any other skill (e.g. guitar playing, cross stitching, marathon running) where you need training and helpful guidance.
And for that I want to assemble this collection of the most useful advice out there, for all of us.
Your contributions are very welcome.
(Disclaimer: by definition links to useful resources are included in this post, I hope it won't get deleted)

Question Will i be monetised for youtube partner program?

Hi guys,

I’ve recently started a YouTube channel focused on benchmarking games on the Xbox Ally X a handheld console. basically testing different games to see what kind of FPS people can expect and sharing the best performance settings I find.

The problem is, I don’t really want to show my face or use my voice. English isn’t my first language and while I can speak English, I’m not very confident when it comes to talking on camera or doing voiceovers.

Do you guys think this type of content can still be monetised and grow without a face or voice? Also, is this considered repetitive content since I’m essentially doing similar tests for different games?

I’d really appreciate your honest thoughts and any advice. Thanks for your help and sorry if this is a dumb question😅

Question How Much Is Too Much For Gaming Videos ?

Hi everyone, I’ve recently been trying out different things on YouTube, and I would like to ask, how long (duration-wise) is too long for viewers, as well as How many videos are too much for a game ?

I’ve played games like Plague Tale and Silent Hill F before and both of those videos I did 12-15 videos for each, with the duration ranging from 10-20 minutes (for these games I’ve spent around close to 20hrs per game). I feel like it’s too much now that I’m looking back at it (I also post 1 short along with it’s long-form and now majority of the channel uploads are just from these two games alone) and I want to change it up a little bit.

I’m currently thinking of doing 45-90 minutes worth of content per video instead, as I get that people don’t want to watch too many videos of the same thing, with the amount ranging from 6-8 at most, even for the most content heavy games. Would this be reasonable ?

I’m mainly concerned about a few things, that being, if the viewer will still be engaged with a video that would take away more than an hour of their time. I have sfx, memes, unhinged and funny moments, subs plus the usual gameplay all in these videos. It’s basically the same thing as a 10-20 minute video but more content.

Any suggestions/thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for reading :)

EDIT: thank you everyone for your responses ! I didn’t expect to have so many people viewing this post :,) but nonetheless, I really appreciate each and everyone of your comments ^^ thank you for the ideas too, I’ll try to reply to everyone ! ;w;
