Comic Discussion X-Men hot takes day 3: Changeling/Morph
Know this guy mostly from 97 but his powers just seem exactly like mystiques so that kinda makes him a little more dull compared to other x-men.

His powers are effectively stronger than mystique
Thankfully mystique actually has a brain

Morph is awesome their powers are different from Mystique's as they can actually grow and shrink their mass and they can mimic powers more effectively. Personality wise they also are very different as Morph is a nice person and Mystique is not. They are also both LGBTQ but Morph cannot pull unlike Mystique

His powers are so loosely defined in the show. Like what abilities does he get from the people he changes into? Like he changes into Psylocke at one point and gains her katana and martial arts, (does he also have her psionic abilities) Dr. Octopus at another point and gets his mechanical arms, or Thor with his hammer. Is there a limit to how long he can stay in a form?
He really just seems like a mechanism for cameo appearances.

More similar to silly putty than Mystique, 97 could do a better job of showing that off though. See a lot of confusion about Morphs shapeshifting abilities, when all it would take is one "splat" to get it better across to the audience. Have Morph turn into the Hulk only to get backhanded into a building or something. Sometimes show writers are frustrating.

Exiles Morph only, accept no substitutes. Your “hot take” is mostly just ignorance, btw. Read Exiles, very different.

Even if his powers were exactly the same, and i don't think they are, their personalities are so different that there is more than enough room for both of them. How many psychics do we have? Or feral berserker? Or telekinetics?

They could use their powers for manipulation and murder but instead invoke the rule of cool for their team and for mutants everywhere, and for the occasional joke. That makes Morph one of my faves. They're nothing like mystique and have a character arc I really love

Mid-take but I liked his portrayal and story from the original x-men cartoon. I’ve yet to see a morph that was even close to resembling that one .

I’m such a morph disliker and I feel bad about it bc I love a nonbinary character but they’re just so lame. I’m just not into silly characters like that and I feel like their only relationship of substance is with Wolverine. Like if they drop off the face of the planet would anyone else even notice?
It’s almost worst in the comics for me. I don’t like AoA much but I still like Blink; morph is like my least favorite early exile. I really dug that unlimited comic bc I love Skin and Husk and already lowkey shipped them but I straight up don’t understand the point of bringing back changeling to sort of develop into morph from the show… but not also nonbinary? Like what’s the point? I get not wanting to change things for exiles/AoA morph because those are actual established characters but 616 changeling barely is and you already have to change practically everything that’s already present to get to someone that’s recognizable as a morph.
I definitely prefer goo-shapeshifting to cameo-shapeshifting which is maybe best suited for comics as a medium but it’s honestly another point against the morphs comic relevance atp bc Kamala’s kind of got that covered atp (even if she’s not quite as freewheeling as any morph I’ve ever seen)

Not a fan of the Exiles version of the character being a rare western comics example of the Anime Pervert archetype.

Exiles Morph is the most fleshed out and awesome.
Even though he loved sunfire and she could never love him back, he loved her enough to honour her life by taking her body to be buried in the universe of her lover. That is one of my favourite issues.
Gotta say though, I'd love to give the 616 Morph a chance once I read the newer infinity comics he's in. I do love his 60s characterisation though, he's/they're fun.

At least in the Exiles, Morph’s body is basically made of putty, which means he can tank a lot of damage that would kill Mystique. He just goes kinda liquid to absorb impact.
He can also turn into objects, where Mystique can only turn into people. In ‘97 he turns into weapons like Deadpool/Magik’s swords, and in the Exiles he turns into basically anything - a parachute, a tank etc.

Exiles Morph is the best Morph, followed by AoA Morph.
