Into the mid-1900s lateen rigged boats were fairly common. You could slap a basic mast on anything from a rowboat to a raft, and then install a lateen sail.
It's a complete antique sail rig for a sailing canoe or a small recreational boat... I could tell by its cotton canvas sail, the gooseneck hook, and the bronze pulley.
That is a lateen sail, likely from a lateen rigged boat. Those were quite common at one time, and have even been used on canoes and rafts because of the simplicity.
The first boat I ever owned was a lateen rigged Snark.
Most Snark boats like the Sunfish, Mayflower and Sunflower were lateen sailed. But they did make a few with more conventional mainsail-jib configurations.
But the Snark model itself was I think their longest running model, and they sold it until the late 2010s. And were so cheap that they were common prizes in a lot of contests. I want to say in 1979 mine cost less than $150. And I could load it on the roof of my 1968 Toyota Corona by myself.
My mom's first boat was actually a Wildflower, which was one of the few conventional sailed boats they made. But she never had the optional spinnaker.
That was what I started on, then when my folks moved up to a Chrysler Mutineer I got a Snark.
During Christmas my dad gave me his old Super 8mm films, and a lot of them were of regattas we went to in the 1970s.
Said like everyone lives on a coast/bodies of water big enough to sail on..most people are landlocked (land lubbers) they’re not going to know the difference between a Preussen and a Barque let alone the names & parts of a Sailboat.
Like I agree, but we have people that even though they live near water, they never learn how to swim, so the idea of them just randomly learning parts of a sailboat kind of seems like it’s not in most peoples wheelhouse.
